Mary Voelz Chandler’s story ("Historical society weighs museum in Civic Center,” April 27, 2007) about the Colorado Historical Society wanting to re-locate within the Civic Center cultural district prompts me to ask about the empty Evans School building at 1115 Acoma. Wouldn’t it make sense for an historic building to house the Historic Society? This beautiful 1904 building is being remodeled — fiinally! — and is only a block or two from the library, art museum, mint, and courthouse. There’s a parking lot adjacent to it, too. Locating the Colorado Historical Society in it could be a shot-in-the-arm for the Golden Triangle / Civic Center neighborhood, and might be cheaper than building yet another new structure (Webb Building, Denver Newspaper Agency, the justice center now being built), this time at the expense of park space. I for one would like to see something done to that old school building, that does not change it's looks. I have a sentinemantal attachment to the Evans School, as my dad attended school there in the 20's. It would be a shame to see it torn down and a unimagnitative structure or structures put in it's place.
