Much to my dismay, during the recent power outage I found that the Quest DSL MSN Premier high speed internet software that I obtained in February had deleted my ability to access the internet using a dial-up capability. I had had dial-up capability from MSN for about 15 years before I signed up for the Quest DSL in February. I had dial tone during the 9 hour power outage but my MSN software no longer gave me a dial-up option and due to the power outage the Quest DSL hookup did not work. The bigger problem is that this is on my Laptop computer that I travel with. I travel to Florida, California, Pittsburgh, PA etc which are not in the Quest provider areas. If I stop at a motel and there is no high speed internet availability I can no longer simply connect to a phone line and using MSN, get on the internet!!! Apparently, some software engineer at Quest or MSN had no “Street Smarts". They didn’t care or didn’t realize that people who use the Quest DSL access here in Colorado also travel with their laptop computers. They took away my dial-up ability and did not tell me that they had deleted that capability! I happen to also have an AOL account and that software has the sophistication to automatically log onto a broadband access line if it is there and goes to a dial tone if there is no high speed connection connected. Using that software I was able to connect to the internet and get my MSN mail and pay some bills during the power outage but I could not get on the internet with Quest. Luckily I have that additional software and an account with AOL which I use if I am out of the country. I don’t really like AOL but I keep it as a backup in case there is a problem with MSN. I am sure that most people do not have both an MSN and and AOL account.
When I am in Pittsburgh I sometimes connect to the internet through Comcast high speed access and when I am there I can select high speed or dial-up, and I can log onto my MSN account. But, with Quest MSN high speed DSL there is no option!
When I signed up with Quest they failed to warn me of this failure with their software. After a number of angered phone calls from me they said that they were going to work on the problem and that perhaps by late summer they could figure out a fix. This is entirely unsatisfactory. Just thought that your readers might be interested in this unsatisfactory problem with the Quest DSL software.
