A knife to the heart
When I read Doyla Lundstrom’s letter to the editor in this morning’s Rocky Mountain News (“Still mourning a son lost to sniper’s bullet,” June 14) I felt like a knife went through me.
I, too, have a son deployed in Iraq and I, too, dread the day the news may come that my son has been killed. I agree with Lundstrom that we need to end this terrible occupation in Iraq and bring our sons and daughters home.
My heart goes out to you, Doyla, for your terrible loss. You should not have had to lose your son because of such a poorly conceived invasion and occupation.
Marilyn Mattson, Denver
I too am sorry for her loss. marilyn I am very sure you son is glad to know that you are waitng for the day you get the news. how about spending time sending good thoughts knowing that he will return.
If you didnt want him in harms way maybe you should have talked to him before he enlisted of his own free will. that was his choice.

Could you sign a name to your posts so we know who the callous jerk is?
Posted by Charles B on June 29, 2007 05:57 AMDon't worry, I heard the Bush twins are on their way to Iraq. War should wrap up soon.
Posted by just sayin' on June 29, 2007 07:32 AMYour son is a hero Mrs. Mattson. I am not able to personally thank him, but he is in my thoughts and prayers.
Question for Anon post @5:42. Shouldn't you be in Iraq, fighting the worthless war you endorse? How does your conscience allow you to put others in harms way and not just do nothing, but denigrate those who actually serve? Is it sheer cowardice or just following the example of Bush, chickenhawk supreme, who maligned decorated veterans McCain & Kerry to achieve his "victories"?
Stop belly-aching! We have solutions for leaving Iraq-NAM and cleaning-up the current Supreme Court mess. Make congress take action on the following:
1.) Boy-George is a UCMJ felon (illegal separation and discharge; 40 years AWOLee and deserter). Surrender monkey and communist-"sider". He is also guilty of war crimes, because like Saddam, he too unleashed chemical weapons (white phosphrous projectiles) against unsuspecting Iraqis. Furthermore, Bush knowingly gave our Iraq-NAM troops Rx mind-altering drugs (PTSD suppressors), so they could murder a larger number of Iraqi citizens. When these troops returned home, he threated them with court-martials for murder, with the death penalty.
2.) Judge Alito like Bush, is also a UCMJ felon (illegal separation and discharge). Alito joined the US Army's ROTC program so he could get his JD/undergrad college degrees, at taxpayers expense. For 7 years of education, Alito incurred an obligation of 11 years of active military duty service. Alito blew-off this requirement under the guise he was a federal law clerk. Federal law clerk isn't mentioned in the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ). Therefore, Alito and Boy George should be sent to prison with Jefferson, Nye, Nacchio, Scooter, Abramoff, Antionette Fuentes-Knappo (Qwest EO attorney), and Cunningham.

I'm a veitnam vet. When we sign up we agree to put our selfs in harms way with the posibility of loosing our lifes. But also assume our government will use their best judgement when putting us in harms way. It is their responcibility to avoid war unless it can't be avoided. We join to defend our country not someone elses. Bush said in a debate with Al Gore that we can not be the words police force and when we put our military in harms way the president owes the american people an exit plan on how to end. So no we don't agree to fight any war that a president wants to fight. This war was one of those bad choices.
The world is full of calleous jerks....been on I-25 lately?
I, too, am grateful for the sacrifices of our service men and women who put their lives on the line all over the world, and the families who sacrifice, too.
Bush didn't declare war all by himself, we must remember to hold our elected officials (ALL of them) responsible for any conflict that is not supported by the American people.
I was in the Vietnam War. Over 58,000 mothers mourned the loss of their sons. For what? Stopping communism (it stopped itself)? Freedom (no 'purple fingers' there)? Attack the US (N. Vietnam didn't threaten America)? Most of the troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan VOLUNTEERED to serve AFTER 9/11. They get it...we were attacked and will be again. Seen the re-enlistment rates? They get it...we are in a war world against Islamofascists. We can't leave Iraq yet.

Posted by Buff Driver on June 29, 2007 10:24 AMMam, the courage that your son shows, and the courage and sacrifice made by Dayla's family, the spirtit that made this country the home we all love. The politics are terrible, but all of our sons and daughters in the military are stand up people who came when our country ask for help. Their likes were at Valley Forge, Montenzuma, San Juan Hill, Normandy, Chosin Resevoir, and Khe Sahn. I pray for the soldiers over in Iraq, and have nothing but thanks and love for them and their families. From an old Marine, "Semper Fi!"

If not now when? If you were in nam then you should know that this war is unwinnable. This war was going on thousands of years before we got there. Saddam in a brutal way just kept the lid on it. When we took Saddam out we removed the lid. If you think our presence is going to make one side of this civil war throw their guns down and quit you'll have a surprize coming. Mark my word that there will come a day when we will realize that we need to cut our loses and leave and we will say the same thing about the killed troops. FOR WHAT!!!!!
"Most of the troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan VOLUNTEERED to serve AFTER 9/11. They get it...we were attacked and will be again."
Again, let's ask the same question - for the one zillionth time - WHAT DOES THE FACT THAT WE WERE ATTACKED HAVE TO DO WITH IRAQ?! Good lord, the Cheney propaganda machine has made mush out of so many conservative minds.
Posted by drew on June 29, 2007 11:53 AMWe, I and all those who voluntarily enlisted to defend our country: We did not enlist to assassinate a President of a foreign nation because he attempted to assassinate the "Shrub's" earthly father. As an Independent, I don't care who is President as long as he/she is not faith-based who talks to a spook in the sky and the spook talks back.
Five Catholic terrorist Supremes recently drove their personal airliners into the wall that separates America's Siamese twins, Church and State to once gain favor the "Shrub." Once the Supremes appoint "Shrub" to the Presidency and in Hein they do to the Wall that separates Church and State what the terrorist did to the twin towers.
Faith-based crap has us in Iraq in which very few if any enlistees would voluntarily choose to go and chaperone a holy war.

Sometimes it's like talking to the wall on your left side.
Posted by KW on June 29, 2007 02:39 PMThe reason you have to keep explaining it KW is because it makes no sense. Oh, and typing in all caps do not make for a stronger point. It only makes your desperation and lack of a valid point even more obvious.
Posted by hikingartist on July 1, 2007 08:42 AMIt's hard to see how the current strategy can possibly pay off. How will we know when we've won? When we've killed all the bad guys?
This isn't a John Wayne movie folks. The terrorists aren't going to simply wave a white flag and go home. They will continue their present course of action until they have exhausted our troops and bankrupted our country.
And then we will withdraw in disgrace once more. Mission not accomplished.
