Why shouldn’t China, Russia, India or any other nation (“China breezes past US as top CO2 emitter,” June 22 ) be justified in emitting as much or more CO2, and possibly other pollutants, as the US, since the leader of the free world gives only lip service to conserving and protecting any area of the Earth’s natural heritage? ( Take heart, Mr. Bush, your citizens still wear the per capita pollution crown. ) My rant is, I suppose, an unfair indictment, since George W. Bush so loves God and His Creation — and would undoubtedly do everything he could to protect it — if only that wouldn’t interfere with the petroleum profits of American companies. His loyalty is commendable — but as president of all of the American people — misplaced.
Super-scientist Sir Isaac Newton’s statement, “If I have seen farther than other men, it is because I have stood on the shoulders of giants.” explaining his accomplishments, could well be paraphrased by the polluters of the world, who learned their art from George W. Bush’s America.

and it is Americas fault how? why is it our fault these 3rd world countries dont care about anything to do with the enviornment?
we have so many enviornmental laws now and more on the way to may some pople feel better. maybe if bush bought a whole bunch of algores carbon credits we would all feel like sitting in a circle and singing kumbaya

By being the largest per-capita consumer and polluter on the planet maybe?

Or do you think we have a special right to use and pollute more than anyone else?
Some sort of filthy-bastard clause, maybe?

Feeling better is a terrible thing in Backwards Land where fish swims.

Don't worry conservatives, there are still some people who think that the greatest nation on Earth should act like it. Stick to ridding our airwaves of sex and profanity

First of all, CO2 is not pollution.

Second, the fact that China is the top producer of man made CO2 (by the way nature is the number on producer of CO2--about 95%of it) is in no way the USA fault. China is developing and is going through the stage where they will produce more CO2 and actual pollution as well. As countries get richer they tend to pollute less.

As for the nonsense about Bush giving lip service to the environment, it simply isn't true. America is producing less pollution and a much smaller rate of increase in CO2 now than when Bill Clinton was president. During the Clinton administration CO2 emission increased 1.81% per year while during the Bush administration it has increased .23% per year. (from the energy information administration EIA). In fact, our increase has been less than the EUs even though they signed the Kyoto Accord.

Rejoice: Fish aka Keith knowing he's on probation didn't allude to others by name-calling. I did chuckle over "typical editorial adroitness." My name-calling is resticted to god and "Shrub," along with the five Catholic terrorist Supremes for reducing to rubble America's Wall that keeps separate the Siamese twins of church and state.
