Apology owed
Saturday, July 28 at 12:00 AM

I have to say that I am thoroughly disgusted with your July 17 front-page picture of Aaron Snyder’s body.

I can’t even imagine what this man’s parents are going through, and then to wake up and see this.

People, no matter what they did, deserve dignity, even in death.

You owe this man’s family an apology!

No apologies! This country is getting weak!

Really? I've seen photos of the dead bodies of mass murderers such as Benito Mussolini and Hermann Göring. Do we owe their families an apology?

WELCOME TO THE REAL WORLD!!!!!!!

Heather C. Neil is now properly stifled; however, Heather ....

Grimes, you're sick and that comment was unnecessary.

Heather, you've got a point. The front page photo was in poor taste. But newspapers are dying and sensationalism sells, no matter how bad the decision of the editors.

The horror and tragedy of the situation is certainly a major story. I don't see how it was advanced one bit by printing that photo on the front page.

Hey person that's to chicken to leave their name with their comment:

I wasn't asking for an apology for myself personally, I was asking for one FOR his family, you might want to read the whole letter before you go spoutin off your idiocy...

Posted by Heather on July 28, 2007 03:23 PM

Heather: Trust me when I say, it is SERIOUSLY doubtful that his parents were reading the paper that day. I wouldn't worry about them. They had much more to deal with than a photo that was already burned into their minds when they got the news of their son's death.

Posted by Sheila on July 28, 2007 03:29 PM

Heather, you are of course quite right, however "dignity" is in somewhat short supply amongst the press, and also evidently many readers - so they have none to spare.

Posted by Bango Skank on July 28, 2007 05:19 PM

Sheila I hope you're right, but when you get down to it, it's the principle of the matter, regardless of whether or not they saw it, it's still wrong.

Posted by Heather Neil on July 28, 2007 09:29 PM

Heather are you a Democrat? Did you vot Democrat in the last election?

Posted by An American on July 29, 2007 10:44 AM

Heather, please forgive me for not understanding, but can you please tell me why it is 'wrong'? I know it wasn't pleasant, but reality is not always a pretty picture and that is the exact purpose of the news.

Also, you said, in your original letter and your comments that you were more concerned about the family, than for yourself, but you contradict that when you say ' it's the principle of the matter' in response to my query.

Again, I don't think the parents were looking and in PRINCIPLE I agree with the decision to publish the paper. We see death everyday and call it 'entertainment' when it is on TV and in movies. Now, THAT'S 'sick' and irresponsible.

Posted by Sheila on July 29, 2007 11:32 AM

Oh, AN AMERICAN: What is the correlation between Heather's upset about the picture and her political affiliation?

Posted by Sheila on July 29, 2007 11:36 AM

Sheila: "An American" is seeking Heather's political affiliation so he can once again call all Democrats cowards. Ignore him. He's just another version of "40acres" in that he is boiling over with emotions and spews a form of bigotry at, and about, anybody who disagrees with his positions. Those attributes pretty much nullify any points he may raise in a debate.

As for Heather's point about dignity in death, there isn't any at the time of violent death. The dignity will come after the voyeuristic tendencies of society have been satiated and the deceased family takes control of the final rites and/or services and seeks privacy.

There's an old newspaper axiom hat goes "If it bleeds, it leads",that's been in play because, quite simply, it sells newspapers.
But since this conversation has devolved into a political mudfest, so be it.
The bush league, (Thank you dmz, I got that from one of your posts.) has not allowed any photos of our dead GIs returning home in flag draped coffins, or graphic photos of wounded vets being "treated" in our VA hospitals.

Would you sick conservatives that are mocking sensible/ sensitive people for objecting to these photos need to see those too? I don't see any cries of censorship from the pro-war camp.

Speaking of the pro-war camp, have you seen the articles about gang problems in the military because they've gotten desperate to meet their recruitment goals?
You can tell that support for an ill-advised war is failing when they run out of 42-year-olds and grandmas.( I wonder how that grandma from Colorado Springs is doing in Iraq?)

Great, now we're teaching gang members how to use advanced weaponry and kill more efficiently.

Thanks King George, police departments all over the USA will be thrilled when THEY return home and use their new knowlege .

I now don't think an apology from the RMN is necessary.

But I WOULD like to see an apology from the minority of voters who voted for the bush league.

Thank you RU Serious: Henceforth I will seek your sagacity before I enter veracity and will take Truth's medication (the guy who thinks his Truth is under copywrite protection). For now let me post an innocuous comment to be repeated elsewhere so all will enjoy Susan's vocal:

www.ffrf.org/radio ~~~~ Click on July 21, Brian Flemming ~~~~ interview. During all my epistles I listened to the brand new song yet to be released: Its Only Natural. I have listened 500 times. I've memorized it and though the song is in the key of C Susan sang it in A flat and I articulate it in E flat on piano. As the late Phil who used to work for me said: "It will knock your socks off."

Actually I'm a registered republican, but I do believe that it's a moot point.....

Now I guess I can look forward to getting yelled at by a bunch of democrats, for being one..........

Sheila I realize that reality is not a pretty picture, believe me I do not live in some bubble or in some sort of delusional fairy tale, I've watched my Dad battle cancer 3 times so I'm not looking for pretty, The prinicple of the matter has nothing to do with my offense over the picture, the principle of the matter has to do with right being right and wrong being wrong, and showing that picture was WRONG, period.

Oh and CW if the minority voted for Bush, how on earth did he manage to win the election............

Posted by Heather Neil on July 29, 2007 02:09 PM

Heather, how can you honestly say that a situation like this calls for a black and white directive FROM YOU that your opinion on what is right is, in FACT, right and that which, in your opinion is wrong is, in FACT, wrong???

This is an area wherein your opinion is JUST THAT. An opinion. I happen to believe that printing the picture was warranted and justifiable. That doesn't make my opinion the rule of law and should be agreed to by ANYONE. Nor should the papers feel compelled to go out and get pictures of every guy shot dead in the streets to satisfy my belief that people should face reality when crap like this happens.

If you don't like the things the papers print, don't buy the papers. It really is just that simple.

Posted by Sheila on July 29, 2007 04:36 PM

Oh,come on guys....most folks don't want to see pix of people who die violently.Don't flame Heather for her opinion. We all might consider, though, that crazy unfortunate Aaron Snyder was gunned down in our name,so I'm suggesting that when murders done in our name take place,we SHOULD have to look at what we say is fine and dandy.Just maybe we should also think about why law enforcement can't seem to get it straight about using non-lethal technology. They're pretty sanguine about taking lives, but when one of their own goes down,we get a deafening chorus of "Oh,the humanity!"

Posted by Jimminy on July 29, 2007 06:14 PM

Tell me that Sheila when it's your loved one laying on the ground........

Oh and I don't buy the paper, I just happened to be at my sisters, when it showed up on her doorstep.........

Heather said "Actually I'm a registered republican, but I do believe that it's a moot point.....

I am not a Democratic, and won't yell at you Heather, but bloody hell woman, what are you thinking?

Posted by Bango Skank on July 29, 2007 07:36 PM

Heather: it won't be my loved one. 'nuff said.

Posted by Sheila on July 29, 2007 08:52 PM

anyone? Heather?ruserious? Why dont I see your heart bleeding comments for those serving to protect both of you, those who are dying in Iraq, whos bodies are not on the daily news. Oh I see, that would mean you would have to feel bad about your gashogs, gashogs that kill service people DAILY. And you fret about a nut. How bout you folk fret bout those dying so you can drive your gashogs and heat your ungodly acreage of a home.Look at thier faces, look at thier families faces, No, its not at the capital in your precious denver, but, they are dying (DYING) so you can complain about a nuts photo on the front page of the news.

Posted by mae on July 29, 2007 11:59 PM

Heather...the family doesn't deserve an apology either....

Posted by Too chicken to leave my name on July 30, 2007 08:02 AM

Heather: It is time to acquiesce to the majority rule. You seem to have one person straddling the fence merely to comfort you. Now that you confess to being a Republican you need to know its sentiment towards women is the same as Confucius, supra, which is the same as Jewish, Islamic, Taliban and Christian men towards women. Join me as an Independent.

Having sired four girls, I despise those male patriarchal macho pigs evidenced in their holy book, surely a misappropriate designation more accurately called Book of the Demon. You need to apologize for knocking the Rocky and you are not even a subscriber.

Deicide Corner: The Catholic Church voted and by one vote women were declared human. I believe in equality and despise all religions / cults / gods equally.

Heather,
" If the monority voted for Bush, how in the world did he manage to win the election?"

W Bush received fewer votes than did Al Gore. Check it out.

He wasn't elected, he was selected

Perhaps if you paid attention you would know that.

Fortunately, the Bush administration is in the process of imploding by virtue of being entangled in its' own web of lies.

So take heart ,Liberals everywhere.

After all, (Heather), right IS right and wrong IS wrong.

Violence is an ugly, but very real part of life.

The photograph of Aaron Snyder was not graphic, gratuitous or disrespectful. It was integral to the story, and I support the editor's decision to run it.

As I've said before -- if popular media have to self-censor everything that could ostensibly offend someone, then the only "news" we will be left with will be what Britney Spears, Paris Hilton and Lindsey Lohan are doing this week.

By showing the grim reality of death and the consequences of violence, perhaps people will begin to realize what is going on in the world instead of seeing everything through rose-colored glasses, and pretending that death and violence only happen in movies and video games.

I am offended that people in this country don't take a more active role in educating themselves about issues of importance. The last thing our country needs right now is more censorship.
