Can Democrats and Republicans work together?
Hardly anything gets done in Congres, neither party has the clear plans or cares for society and their own country?
It would be nice to see both parties to start working together -not fighting and get things done.
Dear team of House of Rpresentatives , the way you talk to us -public makes you look like none of you has any knowledge of economics. What you say and/or do, do not make any sense for many of us.
Who suppose to have more knovledge - You or us? Can you talk with more respect for yourself and others, not criticizing everybody around you like politicians used to talk with the grace class and knowledge of the subject.
The way you talk in public is not even acceptable in average work place, definitely not acceptable at the management level. Please consider.
This letter has not been edited.
when was the last time anyone in congress worked together ? they are all a bunch of sniviling children, who cannot THINK independently of the special interest groups that run them
Posted by Fresh on July 27, 2007 02:24 PMWhat is it about you repubs, you can't write or spell. Stick to realestate, Lucy, it's going down the tubes anyway. The left may support socialized medicine, but the right supports fascism -and by the way, you misspelled 'Congress.' While you screaming red right wingers supported special prosecutors to investigate a president's sex life, when the same is requested for a republican president responsible for 100s of 1000s of deaths, to you it's not fair. I don't want the dems to 'work and play well' with the repubs. I want Pelosi to step aside and have the House of Reps appoint a speaker with some intestinal fortitude and sharp teeth he or she is not afraid to use. After everything you repubs pulled while you were in the majority, all your politicians need to be taught a lesson.
Posted by Tazmin on July 27, 2007 02:25 PMLucy,,ah its a pipedream,, trying to get along with any of the Socialist Democrats is much like trying to shake hands with a rattlesnake.
These people do not want to get along. Their current jihad against President Bush points that out. Do you have any idea of the amount of time, money and effort that has been wasted by this failed Democrat Congress ?
The question is: "Is our children learning?" - GW Bush

Posted by on July 27, 2007 02:31 PMThis letter starts out asking why we can't get along and work together and then makes a statement about the far left wanting Socialism. You see anybody who disagrees with the right is labeled as far left, just watch O'Reilly, he labels everybody that doesn't like Bush as far left or that rediculious tag Secular Progressive. Let me let you in on a little secret, they want to keep us divided because if we came together we would take the power back from the politicians. This is how they keep in power by keeping us divided this way we never really have a majority wanting anything. Labels are what keep us apart!!
Posted by Michael D on July 27, 2007 02:36 PMDB Coffman writes and punctuates likes Bush as well.
Posted by conservative media on July 27, 2007 02:37 PMDid anyone ever think that all the "work together" issues are taken care of and all we are left with are on/off yes/no questions llike abortion, leave Iraq or stay etc.
If cooperating with those on the right means giving in to their theocracy then we are not letting up on our resistance.
I do think all of us Democrats should have t-shirts and bumper stickers say "secular progressive" so folks like O`R can see how many there are of us.
Posted by Sharon B. on July 27, 2007 02:52 PMWhen its looking into rampant corruption, lies and treason, it is "time, money and effort that has been wasted by this failed Democrat Congress" When it is all about a BJ, it's time, money and effort well spent. Ain't that right nut-jobs?

Yes, I wish Congress would disregard things such as consitutional checks and balances. Can't they see how 'small' the rule of law and the Constitution have become over the past 6 years? Why make such a fuss? I can't understand it...golly, what a gosh-darn shame we can't all work together on whatever the president wants from us today.
Posted by on July 27, 2007 03:10 PMThe Congress and Senate and President are working together, to bring about the New World Order, the North American Union, and global corporatism. Except for a few select individuals, our elected officials will work together to see this destruction of the USA through to the end.
Posted by RP McMurphy on July 27, 2007 03:15 PMWith apologies to Mr. Lincoln:
If we could first know where we are, and whither we are tending, we could better judge what to do, and how to do it. We are now far into the fifth year since a policy was initiated with the avowed object, and confident promise, of putting an end to socialist agitation. Under the operation of that policy, that agitation has not only not ceased, but has constantly augmented. In my opinion, it will not cease, until a crisis shall have been reached and passed. "A house divided against itself cannot stand." I believe this government cannot endure permanently half socialist and half free. I do not expect the Union to be dissolved -- I do not expect the house to fall -- but I do expect it will cease to be divided. It will become all one thing, or all the other. Either the opponents of socialism will arrest the further spread of it, and place it where the public mind shall rest in the belief that it is in the course of ultimate extinction; or its advocates will push it forward, till it shall become alike lawful in all the States, old as well as new -- North as well as South.
Posted by John II on July 27, 2007 03:19 PMThe Republicans got their "dream team" leadership with control of both the congress and the presidency only to watch it turn into a living nightmare for the nation. The Democrats then got part of their "dream team" by taking back the congress. Unfortunately, the congress is spending so much time and energy posturing for the 2008 elections via the investigations of Bush, they're proving to be impotent. By the time anything can come of the investigative circuses, Bush will be out of office anyway -- big waste of time.
Pay heed to what Michael D is saying above. Both parties are controlled by special interests -- as long as we the people continue to adhere to the false labels propagated by the political power elites of both parties we stay ineffective and powerless to effect change in this country. We spit and spew at each other while nothing of substance is accomplished in Washington.
I would be ashamed to be labeled as a member or follower of either corrupt parties in power.
Posted by Distrustful with reason on July 27, 2007 03:31 PMJohn II,
Lincoln is spinning in his grave.
" I believe this government cannot endure permanently half socialist and half free.' i presume the far right is your"half free" part of the equation.
Well, with the illegal wire tapping, trampling of the First Amendment, imprisonment without due process, lying under oath by the Atty General, spying by the "library police", war profiteering in Iraq, etc, the "half free" part is rapidly turning into an Orwellian nightmare.
Bush's ideal republic looks like a cross between Orwell's 1984, The Handmaid's Tale and Mein Kampf. God help us all.
Posted by drew on July 27, 2007 03:34 PMListen to yourselves, and then you wonder why Congress can't work together?
Posted by on July 27, 2007 03:46 PMAh, drew reverts to the old Hitler reference.
Well, I'm glad to see you're are so concerned about our constitutional rights. I hate to tell you it's worse than you think. FDR pissed all over our Constitution and we're still paying the price.
By the way, since you are obviously well-versed in our constitutional rights, I'm sure you are aware of the unconstitutionality of a federally managed universal health care system. Let's keep up the good fight and support State's Rights!
Posted by John II on July 27, 2007 03:49 PMDon't worry, the way things are going for the Republicans, who deserve the all the scorn and disgust that is aimed at them, there will not enough Republicans left in 2008 to work with.
The downside is that there will be no more Republican sex scandals
Reading Lucy's letter I wonder...Lucy are you a new immigrant in America trying to learn the language?? If so, you are doing well. Keep on trying!!
Posted by A on July 27, 2007 04:34 PMRegarding the Republican mess we are all in, and old saying: sometimes the best way to defeat an enemy is to give him what he wants.
The Republicans had the government and they either broke it or let it die from lack of attention.
Posted by Sharon B. on July 27, 2007 05:33 PMExcellent point, Sharon B.
The Republicans blew their chance by acting like Democrats. We'll be back stronger than ever though.
Posted by John II on July 27, 2007 05:53 PMThe Republicans blew their chance by acting like Democrats. We'll be back stronger than ever though.
I can only assume the 'we' you are referring to is some incarnation of 'Republicans' (if that is even an ideologically coherent political movement anymore) but unfortunately it remains to be seen whether America will be ever be stronger than ever after the 6 years of single-party rule by the GOP, regardless of the bizarre explanations/rationalizations folks conjure, like the one above.
Posted by on July 27, 2007 06:23 PMI think both parties should go away - neither represents the interests of this country or their constituencies - it is all about the lobbyist interests and their own personal agendas. So "no" they will never get along enough to make a real difference in this country - they (along with most of the posters on this blog) are way too divisive to even speak civily amongst themselves.
Whether it is hunting down Clinton and impeaching him for lying about BJ's in the oval office or trying to get one - anyone in the Bush adminstration they have not been able to get much done. It also does not matter who is in control the Repubs or the Dems, they are corrupt personally and morally.
So all of you posters above who believe your party is the lesser of the two evils you need to wake up realize that the truth is they all suck.
You also need to realize that your opinion is just that an opinion and because somebody does not agree with yours does not mean they are an idiot or lesser on the evolutionary ladder - it only means you agree to disagree.
Posted by Jack Bauer on July 27, 2007 08:54 PMSharon B: you said "I do think all of us Democrats should have t-shirts and bumper stickers say "secular progressive" so folks like O`R can see how many there are of us."

Sharon B: you said "The Republicans had the government and they either broke it or let it die from lack of attention." What you fail to see here is that thefact that the Democrats wereable to take controlby due process shows that our government is NOT "broken" nor "dead" IT WORKS! and still you keep wanting to change it. I do not understand.

Posted by on July 28, 2007 08:17 AMJack Bauer is right on the money. When the opinion writer states in her second sentence, "The far left supports socialism in the U.S." (my grammar corrections), we get a glimmer of how hopeless it is. It's no wonder the two major parties continue their charade. There are honest, legitimate representatives of the People in our government but they are far outweighed by the cronies of the lobbyists. The worse scenario I see, is that one party, the Democrats, will control all three branches of government in 2008 and will make as big a mess as the Republicans have over the past 6 years.
Unfortunately, we as individuals have little to look forward to as the voters, collectively, will undoubtedly repeat the same mistakes as before. It's in our ability but out of our control
Posted by Stan B on July 28, 2007 03:16 PMSharon B seems to think there are more of her ilk then conservatives but I think she is so self righteously wrong. I am one dem who has changed allegiance because I can see what problems the political correctness has caused in Europe and am also paying attention to how Europe is changing back to conservatism. I know a lot of Dems who feel the same way. The majority in this country are neither far left nor far right and we need to decide how we can get a moderate government back. I really think the majority want neither socialism nor theocracy but we have to hit a happy medium and unfortunately the radical left have the biggest mouths!!!! We moderates need to fight back.
Posted by on July 29, 2007 10:40 AMOf course the Democrats and Repuplicans can not work together. The Democrats stand for cowardness and US hating. They will lie to get what they want and do not believe in the values that our country was built on.Their thinking is more in line with the old Communist thinking. If you read history you will see what I say is true.Without even looking into what they say on these postings I can tell you flat out most if not all their" facts" are either half truths or lies. Here is something to think about. The Democrats claim that Bush is taking our freedoms away. Then why did the Bush administration go to court and say that the Second Amendment was a right of the people to Keep and Bear Arms and the Clinton administration went to court and said the Second Amendment was not a right of the people to Keep and Bear Arms.Would someone that wanted to oppress the people let them be armed or take their guns away?
Posted by An American on July 29, 2007 11:46 AMDemocrats are cowards and US haters.Republicans cannot deal with that.
Posted by An American on July 29, 2007 11:51 AMDemocrats claim that Bush is taking away or freedoms. The Bush administration went to court and said the Second Amendment was a right of the people to keep and bear arms. The Clinton admistration went to court and said the the Second Amendment was not a right of the people to keep and bear arms. Also in Washington DC a court has ruled that the people of DC have a right to own firearms for self defense. The Democrat administration in DC is going to court saying that the people do not have that right and want the ruling changed to say the people do not have a right to own firearms. Also Bill Ritter said he is for banning guns in Colorado. In fact he supported gun bans in Denver.Which party do you think is trying to take our rights away the one that want to disarm the citizens or the one that wants the citizens to have firearms. The answer is common sense!!!

Posted by jvd on July 31, 2007 09:54 AMWho wants Congress to "work together"?
I want those who agree with me to prevail and those who don't to have their deluded views exposed. Every time.
As for "hardly anything getting done," that's a good thing. Congress is never more effective when it doesn't pass yet another damn law, most of which either cost me money or limit my freedom.
Posted by prima facie on July 31, 2007 10:02 AMThe answer is no, they can't work together.
The reason that they can't work together is because each party has its own agenda that is markedly different than the other.
On issues of extreme importance, one cannot always find an acceptable compromise.

"On issues of extreme importance, one cannot always find an acceptable compromise"
Then what the hell are we paying them to do? The only reason they can not find an acceptable compromise, is because not one of them care anything about the welfare of the country.
