Children of soldiers
Sunday, July 1 at 2:00 PM

Tesha Irvin of Keenesburg writes:

As we approach the anniversary of our founding fathers’ Declaration of Independence, I am sure our Service men and women will be recognized by the local and national media, but it seems more appropriate for those of us at home, to recognize and support those family members standing beside our heros. Whether it is the Soldier’s spouse, parent, sibling or that new pre-school graduate, somebody is waiting for our Service members to come home. Our military children are often the most affected family members by mobilization and deployments.
National Military Family Association (NMFA) is an organization that helps to assist the family members during their time of need. NMFA has been around for 37 years and works to provide the knowledge and education our family members need to know their rights and benefits.
Operation Purple Camp is just one of the activities sponsored by NMFA for children. They offer a week long camp at locations around the country to provide the children of deployed parents skills to cope with the stress of deployment and meets others in the same situation. The experiences during the week long camp are key to emotional feelings a child goes through while not having a parent, or maybe both, around for an entire year. My two young sons are already feeling the anxiety about not having mom at the baseball game, a birthday party, Christmas time or to tuck them in everynight with a kiss and to say I love you every morning.
While you are enjoying your family traditions during the 4th of July, whether it is the BBQ, the parades, the firework shows or just staying at home, please join me in matching the cost you spend on fireworks this year, as a donation to Operation Purple.
Not only are you supporting the Soldier but you are supporting a fellow citizen, future leader, and an innocent child affected by the war we are in!
