CU later, cash
So, the University of Colorado will have a hefty raise in tuition! (“Reluctant CU regents OK steep tuition hike,” June 29.)
Why? So we can pay anti-American speakers and teachers like Kofi Annan and Ward Churchill.
Ain’t socialism grand?
George Lilly, Denver
...and our tax dollars too. As long as 90% of the typical universitiy faculty, department heads and administrators are liberals, socialists and displaced communists, don't expect big changes any time soon.
The check ain't in the mail.
Posted by hank on July 9, 2007 06:57 AMHey, Churchill's salary has to come from somewhere.
Posted by Yaakov Watkins on July 9, 2007 08:23 AMDidn't all those academics and liberals tell us that if we did not overturn the Bruce amendment all state tuitions would have to be raised, and look now that we have overturned the Bruce amendment, tuitions are on the rise, Ritter and the rest of the liberal legislature has increased all taxes. I guess that old saying is true..."Tax and spend Democrats"
Posted by taxman on July 9, 2007 08:48 AM hank and Yaakov,
A whopping 7% of CU's funding comes from the state.
And 2 months ago, a Conservative Professor at CU was arrested for embezzlement at the same school.
But you didn't see THAT plastered all over the (conservative-owned) main-stream media.
I think I'd rather have Professors who aren't afraid to exercize theitr 1st ammendment rights and speak out about what's really going on in this country than ones who sneak around and rip the students off.
Don't forget, also, that the reason tuition had to be raised in the first place is because the (Republican ruled) Federal Govt, had cut funding to institutions of higher learning.
Check out the brass plaque on the new law school building on campus and find out for yourself what the truth really is behind the funding.
It's a damn shame.
That is the funniest thing I have heard in a long time that the main stream media is owned by conservatives. I wonder what country dmz lives in because it sure ain't the US.
Also he obviously hasn't seen what happens to conservatives on college campuses across the country. Wow it is unbelievable how blind some people are when they only see what they want to see.

I'm happy you're laughing, now, if you'll put down your bong long enough to reflect on this, you may become enlightened.
Rupert Murdock is certainly no Liberal, hell, he's not even an American, but you cons DO live in a world all your own, don't you.
Listen to Air America, (if you can find it amid all the Hannity, Beck, Schlesinger, O'Riley, Limbaugh, etc. etc., etc. whining and screeching on our PUBLIC OWNED airways as you drive across the country.)
You just may learn something.
What's so hard to understand about this? There's less money coming from the government, so the school has to raise tuition. Contrary to what the original idiot letter writer wrote, this is the exact opposite of socialism. My guess is George Lilly doesn't know the meaning of the word.
Socialism would be increased tax funding to the school, and a decrease in tuition for the average student. If that happened, my guess is you same losers would be whining about it, calling it socialist and cursing those blasted liberals from your rocking chairs between episodes of Matlock.
Socialism isn't just whatever you don't agree with, in the same way that "republicanism" doesn't apply to all stupid ideas.
Posted by Grog on July 9, 2007 11:33 AMdmz : me with a bong is even more laughable actually. I have just had my eyes opened by all the Democrat garbage after years of voting Democrat. I have changed my affiliation to Independent because of the far left wing Hollywood elites and their followers hi-jacking the once great Democrat party. I refuse allegiance to George Soros and moveon.org unlike the modern liberal Democrats.
I see where your hate America stuff is coming from now because I have listened to Air (lies) America and I have to say if you believe the likes of Randi Rhodes you really are more brain washed then I could ever be. They are the most hateful anti-American blinded by Bush hate people that I have ever listend to. The reason the liberal talk shows don't make it is because they lie and are so hate filled. The people and the sponsors supported by the people are what make any show on the radio popular but then I would hope you know that.

My, my, we're certainly touchy today aren't we?
I surmise that by Hollywood elites, you mean Herr Reagan & his bankrollers who started this whole hate-America groundswell with their anti-Union, pro-illegal employer agenda.
And as far as you EVER being a Democrat, give me a break. You sound like Joe Macarthy. Thank God HE was exposed for what he was. A paranoid, right-wing pig.
Much like the republic party of today.....
And by the way, I'm proud to be a Liberal, peace-loving Native American, pilgrim..Do YOU have your papers ready when your Homeland Security enforcers ask for them?(Or is that Fatherland Security? It's so hard to tell one fascist from another.)
America has survived your ilk before, and we shall again.
"far left wing Hollywood elites and their followers hi-jacking the once great Democrat party"
I very much doubt that this brain-dead regurgitater of Rush & O'Reilly's talking points ever voted Democratic in his life. People who vote Democrat usually have IQs that exceed their age - and in this case that definitely isn't so.
"The reason the liberal talk shows don't make it is because they lie and are so hate filled," - that's funny when you hear the bile and unadulterated crap spewing from people like Ann Coulter, Michael Savage & BillO.
These people must live in some sort of conservative, pie-in-the-sky nirvana, or their minds are so befuddled by the claptrap spewing from right wing media that they can't think straight any more.
Posted by drew on July 9, 2007 01:42 PMThis has nothing to do with democrats and republicans, it has everything to do with elitism. The increase in tuition will mean more people will be borrowing more money from the gov't, which means the gov't will be making more $$ on student loan interest. So, no, this isn't socialism, this is coercion, blackmail and extortion; i.e. thuggery. And what exactly do you get for your multi-thousand dollar education? A piece of paper that says you're certified in the eyes of the government to make over minimum wage, and therefore overqualified to earn minimum wage, and the supposed ability to use a library.
Posted by Roy on July 9, 2007 02:54 PMRoy, those folks lending money are, ...aherm, banks.
Swap every instance of "government" in your posting with "corporation" and you will be closer to the reality.
Corporations will make more money off loan interest, corporations will set artificial job requirements, etc.
Posted by Bango Skank on July 9, 2007 03:32 PMI sure as hell know where my monthly student loan checks are going to, and i make them out to the Department of Education, which is the government.
Sallie Mae, the largest student loan lender, is not only subsidized by the government, but hands out 'federal' loans (PLUS, Stafford, e, which are loans by the government. Those banks are subsidized by the government to give out the student loans, which in my view is pretty much the same as being the government. Most schools now participate in the Federal Direct Student Loan Program, which makes it much easier for students to get loans because they don't have to go searching for them as the student loan counselor at their school will set them up with one from the government, even if it is through a seemingly private company. Even if you do happen to get a private loan with no connections to the government, most likely your loan will be sold to Sallie Mae or someone similar, which are all heavily subsidized by the government.
dmz...
No kidding...but even 1% is 1% too much! If you want my 1% to support these displaced communists and hate-America malcontents, then ask.
Not one stinking dime for this crowd. You socialists are all alike, you all think that the planet owes you something. It doesn't.
