Ethanol
Saturday, July 7 at 2:00 PM

Robert Lipton of Lakewood writes:

Interesting to read the difficulty of allocating water from the Platte.
Colorado is slated to have six operating ethanol from corn plants. It takes three or more gallons of water to make a gallon of ethanol from corn and of course it takes water to grow corn. Where is all this water going to come from ? Perhaps Ken Salazar has a solution.

And are these ethanol plants subsidized by our taxes? Think we the taxpayer will ever be repaid for these subsidies? Another get rich quick scheme, that will eventually leave very few rich and the rest to flounder.

I have a 1987 Porche 911 Carrera in pristine shape. It is my pride and joy as well as my means of transportation. In the operation manual it clearly says not to use anything lower than 91 octane gasolene and not to use Ethanol or any other fule. There are millions of cars on the road that require the same. The engines in thse vehicles are simply is not designed for such fule and would cause sever damage if used.

My question is this; If the government dictates in favor of special mercantile interests rule that automobiles must use fules made from corn and God knows what else, are they going to offer me and the many others an exemption to that rule.

Or will these cars be outlawed, which would not be the first time in the history of the nation that the government used their law making control powers to dictate the demise of private property like so many other things have been destroyed by the junk science and the zealousness behind the new Health Religion that government favors over freedom of choice.

I know there are those who will say well just who the hell do you think you are to be allowed an exemtion to a law that protects the health of people. To them I say a well tuned gasolene engine runs cleaner, more efficiently and will last longer than any vehicle that uses corn or other vegetable based fuels.

Why, well they just don't have the science yet nor do they have any studies on the long range effects of such fuels and, as Robert asks, where is the water going to come from to produce these fuels.

Allen, how insensitive you are to drive your pride and joy around while all those illegals can not afford a porsch. When we as tax payers makeup for the rest of the world and thier lack of industrialization then we may be cut some slack. In the meantime I suggest you sell that porsch and get hybrid. Remember they can do 100 miles an hour. Al Gore Jr. proved it while driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

Corn is used to feed cattle from which we get meat and milk, has anyone noticed that the price of a gallon of milk has gone up $1.00 in the past month or two? Corn or corn syrup is used in 75%-80% of our favorite snacks. With this government mandated use of ethanol the price of our food will escalate faster than the price of gas, and the cost of maintaining our vehicles will climb even faster and also the milegae we get from our vehicles will significantly drop.

Save the USA

There are many technical issues and also energy issues regarding ethanol. Ex.: it can not be sent through pipelines, must be trucked. Besides water, think of the energy that must be used to produce the corn, truck it to the plant and truck the ethanol to refineries. Fuel mileage on the E85 is not as good as on regular gasoline.

This was feel good legislation that wasn't looked at carefully. I suspect it may be a short term solution to reducing our dependence on foreign oil. If we get to where we can plant switchgrass instead of corn and use land not used for food crops the effect on our overall economy won't be as drastic.

I, for one, am doing without the corn syrup - it makes you fat, anyway. LOL
