Free speech Chicken Littles
It was amusing to hear college professors cry that the free speech sky is falling in the wake of Ward Churchill’s firing (“‘A fateful decision’ for faculty,” July 26).
After a lengthy investigation, it was proven that Churchill, among other things, committed plagiarism, invented facts and manufactured sources for his research.
If that doesn’t justify a professor’s termination, I don’t know what does.
I wish the Rocky Mountain News and other media outlets giving a forum to all the free speech Chicken Littles out there would care as much about the rest of the Constitution as they do about the First Amendment.

I guess the hens in the hen house are all worried they could be found out. I bet there will be better research and book writting coming out of cu in the next year, that or a lack of anything showing up becasue they would have to do honest work to publish up there. I am sure there are a lot of very honest people up there who would never stoop to the lowest spot of churchill, but I do worry that there are others sitll there. you know birds of a feather type stuff.

Posted by on July 31, 2007 05:51 AMMan, it was so hot today, I was sweating like Billie Mae Owens, knowing Churchill will be suing him for financial damages, as a named defendant. Churchill isn't America's biggest problem. We need to cull the herd of GOP felons (Ike-Mans). GOP = BodyBags'R'US or pimps of oppression. Far too many felons in our midst. Bush and Alito are UCMJ felons (AWOLees, deserters, and they perjured their illegal seaparation and discharges). Judge Roberts did a perjury number on the congress. He didn't come clean or show his cards, regarding his existing medical condition. Scooter Libby committed perjury and obstruction of justice.
Churchill has a duty to his NAM brothers and sisters, to sue Owens and Suther (draft-dodgers) as named defendants. It is owed to all disabled Vietnam veterans, where Owens and Suther unleashed WMD on vets with regards to their disability, contracting, and hiring benefits. I intend to testify at this trial as a "friend of the court" (taxpayers who were defrauded through federal funds fraud, waste, and abuse). This is my "free speech".
Posted by 40acresandmymuleandNAMvetbennies on July 31, 2007 07:06 AMreally, those damn liberals and their 'rights' are going to ruin America. Lets we hope for a Republican president and Congress, so we can suspend 9 of the Bill of rights ( well we HAVE to keep the 2nd amendment, nobody gets my husband's gun). Liberals jeezus , give it up, we have a free country with all the rights our president thinks we should have. Those silly founding fathers were a bunch of damn liberals if you ask me. Time to write a new Constitution for us conservatives.

Are these the same "chicken littles" that squawk and squawk about how if gays are allowed to marry, it will be the end of the world as we know it?
Posted by Thomas on July 31, 2007 07:38 AMFabian,
We live in an age where it takes a federal court case to keep "Huckleberry Finn" on the library shelves because Twain has characters speaking in the language that was spoken at the time but it takes more than 2 years to fire a fake academic living (very nicely thank you) off the public payroll.
I'm sure Twain appreciates the irony.
Posted by James Jones on July 31, 2007 07:47 AMSure hope Ward what's- his- name slithers off into oblivion. Bye bye plagiarist guy!

Posted by RickyLee on July 31, 2007 02:09 PMI'm with you on PC speech JJ, hate speech is the thin end of the wedge.
Ironic how the PC elite use free speech to defend themselves.

Posted by Holy Reality on July 31, 2007 06:50 PMYes, Holy Reality, it truly is ironic that the PC crowd will wrap themselves in the First Amendment. Many of those same folks in the PC crowd are the same college professors apologizing for Ward Churchill who are the same college professors who will give a bad grade to any student with the audacity to express a different political view point than those professors feel is the correct view point. Those are the same folks who say they are in favor of freedom of expression and diversity of opinion. That is, as long as those are the expressions and opinions about which they agree.
I heard a woman say that when she was studying for a degree of some sort (sorry I missed that part) her professor found that she didn’t have the proper political stance. She would not be called upon to answer questions in class unless the professor wanted to mock her, when it came time to get help for her thesis she had trouble getting an appointment with the professor and when she finally did she only got about 10 – 15 minutes while other students with the correct political stance got a full hour, and she got a failing grade for the course. However, she didn’t take it lying down and contested the grade through the school and got her grade raised to a B. She said that unfortunately, absolutely nothing happened to the professor.
It doesn’t matter what the course covers. It could be pottery or computer technology; if most any professor of a major college institution finds out that one of their students is a (whisper the word) conservative, the students’ chances of getting fair treatment is greatly diminished. That is not an opinion. That is a fact.
