PrideFest
Monday, July 2 at 2:00 PM

Larry Davis of Gunnison writes:

What an insult to Rocky Mountain News subscribers. This is the worst front page I’ve ever seen (“Portraits of pride,” June 25). Is gay pride the only news that happened in Denver on Sunday? Someone was really “asleep at the switch” when they approved this hideous front page.

Larry Davis:

You can come out any time now. Only your fellow bigots will hate you.

This poor man does not believe that gays are born that way. That would make his God look sloppy. What a delilama.

Perhaps he is afraid that one day, he will look across the room and see "Mr. Right" and fall helplessly in to gayness and lust.

Maybe he will even contemplate having a sex change operation because that is just part of "choosing to be gay" in his pitiful little mind.

If gays are born that way, the Bible and it`s abominations are dust, and God is a joke

Sharon
I am a conservative Catholic and the condemnation (religious but to the individual not the community) is for sex outside of marriage and is exactly the same as the condemnation for heterosexual behaviour. Of course some prefer to micromanage others rather than understand the "Judge not.." part of the same Bible.

I am instructed by that same Bible, to treat others with respect and love. Nowhere do I see "pester and show contempt." Same book has that annoying, spinter/log instruction too.

Hey momma, but you can smite lots of folks who break commandments.

Go read the original ones in the OT, they are not the ones we tell our kids about today, because they give a penalty for breaking them:death.

Also, God seems to have overlooked that 11th commandment about premarital sex. He was to busy making up commandments about how He should be treated, three or four are "all about him"

He/She seems to make everything about him/her.

Don`t you ever find this funny?

Posted by Sharon B. on July 2, 2007 04:55 PM

"We're not mad at you because you're gay, we're mad at you because you're having sex out of wedlock."

"Ok then, I'd like to get married please."

"You can't get married. You're gay."

Sorry Momma, not buying it.

Posted by Sharon B. on July 2, 2007 05:08 PM

Yeah, I've always thought it was pretty funny that so many "religious" people believe that God wrote the ten commandments himself but didn't see fit to include anything about sexuality, other than saying "don't commit adultery".

Oh, but he was worried about us picking another God over him or using his name in vain.

Um, isn't that vanity in itself?

So, the way the fundamentalists and alot of others think, God created the universe and everything in it but he didn't think it was important to make everyone heterosexual. Instead he came up with the loophole of judgment. I'll just give them the right to choose their own paths but if they don't choose the path I want, I'll punish them for it with eternal damantion.

I'm a spiritual person and I do believe in God..but not the vain, vengeful, judgmental, tyrannical God that these people CHOOSE to believe in.

I believe in a god who made everything just as it is. Our challenge is not to change to be like each other but to accept each other as God made us. If God had wanted us all to be the same, he certainly could and would have made us that way.

You must lead a pretty asinine life if your moral guide is a 2,000 year old book filled with stories of rape, war, murder, revenge and spirits.

Posted by Sean on July 2, 2007 05:16 PM

How did this turn into religion bashing? Mr. Davis didn't mention religion at all.

Hey Sharon B, I'm not particularly religious and I really don't care about your religious interpretation of it all, but what makes you think being gay is not a choice? What makes you think they're born that way? Are vegetarians born that way too, or is it a lifestyle choice?

Posted by andy on July 2, 2007 05:44 PM

Hey, I can go for the spirits, leave that one alone.

Kudos today. An American family outing on the cover. What is that, 1 out of every 50 days for that type of coverage?

I am hoping andy will tell us about when he made a choice to be heterosexual rather than homosexual. Or maybe he didn't choose either. Maybe he chose to be a vegetarian.

Posted by Truth on July 2, 2007 07:07 PM

Every issue about homosexuals is about religion. Oh some say it just creeps them out, thinking of gays together, but the same people usually don`t get all squeamish when thinking of heteros do the same stuff. So in the end, it is all religion.

Someone please tell me how you chose to be straight. I as so curious.

Sean, have you seen thebricktestament.com/ yet. Go there and enjoy the Old Testament acted out with Legos.

Posted by Sharon B. on July 2, 2007 07:29 PM

Sharon B,

Since it takes a male and female to procreate and carry on the species, I'd have to say our innate urges would certainly be heterosexual in nature. I don't know much about biology, but that seems to make the most sense. So if someone goes against that innate urge, I guess I'd have to call that a choice.

Again I ask, what makes you think homosexuality is not a choice?

Posted by andy on July 2, 2007 10:37 PM

Because homosexuality exists in the animal world, especially in primates.

But if men want to believe that some men choose sex with men, go ahead. I think that means every heterosexual man is secretly afraid he, himself, may turn gay at any moment.

Maybe that is why so many are violent and aggressive when ever they can get away with it. Maybe that makes them feel "manly" and causes all the jokes about us women "feminizing" men.

Since all you straight men are choosing straightness, what protects you from changing?

Just havn`t met the right man yet?

Posted by Sharon B. on July 3, 2007 12:32 AM

Sharon,

Yep there is a lot of smiting but only one smiter. And a hefty smiting penalty for forgetting that is laid upon the forgetful one. Moses got on the wrong side of that provision that's why he was denied entrance to the promised land.

"You must lead a pretty asinine life if your moral guide is a 2,000 year old book filled with stories of rape, war, murder, revenge and spirits."

Oh, it's worse than that. I'm a Roman Catholic scholar and a deep Catholic. Don't think much of anyone who tries to force any religion on another though. Hope we've learned that much but from some of the plant food posted here I doubt it.

I hold the Bible to be a book of lessons and learning with absolutely no place in anyone else's face. I believe and if you also believe good. If you don't believe also good.

That's another example of treating adults as adults.
For those asking about commandments on adultery simple, short answer is the prohibition on adultery which, in the ancient languages has multiple meanings but which also depends on the actual texts you read in either the Talmud, the early Christian writings and other documents as well as the teachings handed down from the past, it is covered. There was so much added to all the commandments by the ancients that you have to study history and language to gain a good understanding.

No need to argue though. The prohibition on gay marriage is a both secular one and a religious one. So long as no church is forced to perform the ceremonies I would have to search pretty hard to find any reason to oppose secular aceptance, but then again I'm a scholar, not really practical. And I have never learned to hate.

Getting back to the original letter (remember that?), PrideFest made the front page simply because it was the biggest, most colorful, hugely-attended event in Denver that day. It's natural front-page material. Like when the Broncos play (always a front cover, especially if they win), or the Taste of Colorado, or the Race-for-the-Cure or Bolder Boulder, etc.

Give it a rest, people.

Larry Davis is right.Being proud of being a homosexual is like being proud of having sex with your dog or chicken.I think some of the writers above are doing these things.

Sharon B. says… “But if men want to believe that some men choose sex with men, go ahead. I think that means every heterosexual man is secretly afraid he, himself, may turn gay at any moment.”

Ah yes, anyone who doesn't believe homosexuality is natural, is secretly afraid they might have gay urges themselves. I’m sure that sends the critics of your point of view scrambling to defend themselves. Unfortunately it doesn’t really address the subject.

Homosexuality is a very politically correct issue, and as such, there are many researchers trying very hard to prove it’s a natural condition and not a choice. And I’m sure that if any conclusive proof had been found, it would certainly have been front-page news around the world. But to my knowledge, nothing conclusive has been found. If I’ve missed some research, please enlighten me.

If you are a Muslim, say praise Allah for he places every baby in every womb and turns Jews into monkeys and for his slaves creates virgins without menses, stools or urine and for the gay little service boys (ask.com); if you are Jewish, say kill a goat for me and carry out pogroms which involve genocide but save the virgins and give Jehovah his share; if you are Christian in which a Jew, "fruit from the womb" of a 13-year-old sired from the "loins of David" without benefit of clergy in which you eat the flesh and drink the blood of the Jewish baby transmogrified into an anti-Semitic Christian god, make the sign of the cross, and Catholics say ten Our Father, ten Hail Mary and make an act of contrition before the pedophile priest. So even though no evidence has been found one way or the other regarding a choice, you're still 100% sure, huh Andy?

On one hand, you're chastizing people who say being gay is not a choice, because there's no evidence.

On the other hand, you're 100% sure being gay IS a choice, even though there's no evidence.

Posted by Tbone on July 3, 2007 10:44 AM

Unless one is gay oneself, one cannot make statements about "choice" in being gay. You simply cannot know this.

I am gay and have never felt I had a choice as to which gender I was attracted to. I have the choice to engage in sexual behavior with a person of the opposite sex, but that does not mean "being gay" is a choice. That means having sex with a woman while fantasizing about Antonio Banderas is a choice.

The evidence of sexual orientation NOT being a choice resides in my heart, soul and very being.

Posted by Tom on July 3, 2007 10:53 AM

One thing I learned in college is that gender is fragile. Those X and Y chromosomes can get mighty mixed up. also, all mammals are conceived female and change into male some 14 days later.

Sexual attraction may be more complicated then we know, but brain studies and work with animals, say adjusting the hormones the mother gets before birth, has lead to some surprising findings.

One surprising factor in animals is that stress creates different hormones and that produces more homo animals, Research into sheep and goats discovered this.

Also, men who have a number of older brothers are statistically more likely to be gay.

That almost looks llike the mothers body contributes some X factor we haven't found yet.

But still, even if it is inborn to be gay, some people may just want to play around with sexual experimentation.

Not with animals, so save the criticism.

If you are a heterosexual man reading this, remember that your mothers pregnancy, her number of children and other factors may be the reason you are only, and for ever attracted to women.

You did not make that choice. To believe we are all born hetero and some go gay, is nonsense. to believe that babying a little boy or letting him paint or play with dolls, or listen to music is what gays him is why so many men are afraid to even admit they have an interest in these, and related subject.

'straight men are in a box here, they can`t fully express themselves for fear someone will call them "gay".

Gay men, can finally be free to be themselves.

You go guys!

Like I said in my earlier post, it takes a male and female to procreate and carry on the species. Looks to me like heterosexuality is the natural order of things. Saying it needs to be proven is like saying we need to prove water is wet.

But if anyone knows of some conclusive studies showing homosexuality is naturally occuring, I'll be willing to look at it.

Posted by andy on July 3, 2007 11:30 AM

andy proclaimed:

The thing you don't get, andy, is that nobody is obligated to prove sh*t to you. Adults are free to make their own choices in the United States as long as no harm comes to others as a result of their actions. This reality includes whatever people choose to do with their genitalia. If I want to dress up in clown make-up, swath my groin in frog entrails, and hop around with my thumb in my bum that's my prerogative. Ultimately your opinion about such matters is just you running your mouth (although PETA might come after me).

This brings us to question of why you care so much. It's easy to conclude that you have some issues about your own sexuality that cause your negative reaction to be so adamant, despite your denials.

My guess is you're more religious than you'd like to let on. Otherwise what is your motivation for caring so much about other poeple's sexual relations?

Posted by Charles B on July 3, 2007 12:21 PM

Hmm, and I always thought that what separates most of us from animals is that we don’t act on all of our instincts and urges. We are smart enough to do things by choice and make those choices. Now here comes the liberal deep thinkers telling our children that it’s OK to act on urges, just do whatever you feel like. I wonder how many more lives that’s gonna cost, not to mention the financial burden. Since the AIDS epidemic began in the US more than half a million people died from it, not to mention other ST diseases. You would think seeing that, people would wise up, but hell no. “Stupid is, stupid does” said Forrest Gump’s mother, a wise woman.

Posted by Uno on July 3, 2007 12:21 PM

You found me out Charles. I'm really a bible banger who has secret gay urges. Good job, you're very clever.

If you look back, you'll see I've only been responding to those who claim being gay is not a choice. I simply asked what what proof there is to back that up. Sorry if that got your knickers all up in a twist.

Because all my post have been asking about proof. If you weren't going to offer any, why did you chime in in the first place?

Posted by andy on July 3, 2007 03:39 PM

Roy. Dogs make choices. They hump anything that moves and a few things that can`t. Then mating season comes and they look for females.

Now if human females only came into heat, well then the gays could not resist us.

Call off the war, its mating season.

Posted by Sharon B. on July 3, 2007 03:55 PM

So do you think the motivation to be gay is simply that male mammals like to hump everything in sight? What about lesbians? Perhaps that is more of an emotional thing?

Posted by Roy on July 3, 2007 04:23 PM

Sharon B, you say it's natural for humans to be homosexual because animals are known to engage in that sort of behavior. But animals - including primates - also engage in such things as infanticide and cannibalism. Does that mean humans have those natural urges too?

Posted by andy on July 3, 2007 04:42 PM

You better believe it. Grrrrr...funny, those urges are momentary not all the time.

Any kid living with an unrelated male is far more likely to be hurt or killed. Chimps do the same thing.

We are risen apes, just much better primates then the others.

As to homo relationships, I think they love each other.

Or like that play boy bunny guy, they just like sex, but not with women.

If you woke up tomorrow and were attracted to a man, what would you do? What would you feel?

And as for offspring, most hetero sex is recreational, you know like Adam and Eve in the garden. All fun, no kids.

Not every member of a species needs to reproduce. Not even humans.

Hope there was a little something in there for all the posters with questions.

Got to run, have to let my boy-toy out for a walk.

Yes, people do those things. But are they normal, natural, innate acts? People jump out of airplanes too, but that doesn't mean it's natural for them to.

Again, if anyone can point me toward any research that's been done showing some conclusive proof homosexuality is a natural condition and not a choice, I'll be happy to look at it.

not at all, they are choices, just as they are choices when animals do it. The urges that motivate the actions may me natural, though the actions themselves are choices.

Posted by Roy on July 3, 2007 05:47 PM

Roy, well duh, as a valley girl would say. We are stating that attraction to same sex is natural and not a choice.

we are not talking "urges" here. I often have an urge to scream and tear my hair when I read postings like yours, but I choose no to.

Until we can prove to your satisfaction that sexual attraction, just happens, and the only choice is to act or not, why don`t you check out Discover, Omni, etc for current work on gender identification and sexual preference.

If you want to be educated, which I doubt, so shoot me, go looking for yourself.

Years ago I needed to know lots of stuff for my own peace of mind. I started by dumping all my "shoulds, oughts, musts, sins, perversions, etc. " and looked for myself.

Stay out of Bibles and Holy books, they will make you barking mad and confused.

Posted by Sharon B. on July 3, 2007 07:23 PM

I wasn't asking for anything difficult, was I? Just asking for a little evidence to support the claims being made. They way a few of you spout off opinion and speculation like they were fact, I figured someone would be able to come up with something to back it up. I guess not.

Posted by andy on July 3, 2007 09:02 PM

Andy, when we point out research, you ignore it. Why do we bother? Because there is a lot of scientific findings on sexual preference and gender identity.

You can have your own opinion, but you can`t have your own facts. Research is showing a strong trend toward inborn sexual preferences or attraction.

Enough, go find out for yourself. The library is open late.

Posted by Sharon B. on July 3, 2007 09:20 PM

I'm sorry, I guess I missed what specific research you pointed out. "Check out Discover or Omni." "The library is open late." Was that it?

If there was any conclusive proof, surely someone would be able to point right to it - Study A, conducted by Drs. B, C, and D, published on this date, etc, etc, or whatever.

So much for any compelling evidence.

And the money from evangelicals who want to turn this country into a Christian theocracy with women's rights similar, in some aspects to Islamic countries.
