War on drugs & U.S Borders
Here is a novel and very workable idea, kill the so-called war on drugs, it has had less than zero positive effect on drug use or trafficking; and use the money saved toward actually securing our borders and putting some sensible controls into effect on the unlawful activity now prevalent at gun shows and poorly secured gun shops.
This will never happen because we seem to have nearly zero politicians today who are willing to do things like this that make good sense, would save lives, make us more secure and get rid of a program which has become nothing but a sop for federal government agencies and local governments, because it would be unpopular in some conservative circles.
Are there any politicians out there that are willing to take this challenge? I doubt it.

How dare you suggest that politicians use common sense!
I suppose you wish the drugs to conquer America, drugs hate us for our freedoms, and they behead us!
Wait wrong reply. I suppose you want druggies to win, they hate us because of our freedoms. Drugs will not give up until every American is addicted.
Your appeaser rants will not go unpunished, once America is purged of the unclean America haters we will truly be free.
Wait, nevermind.

Posted by A on July 23, 2007 04:04 PMYou make an excellent argument on two fronts, John; the first being that the money spent for the war on drugs is a total waste, and secondly, that the politicians are hard pressed to do anything logical.
The one weakness in your argument is failing to acknowledge that the war on drugs does accomplish two very important goals for politicians and bureaucrats (including law enforcement agencies). First, it is a gigantic golden goose prolifically laying golden eggs and spreading out entitlements that politicians can lay claim for and to. Secondly, it provides a feel good “look at how I’m fighting for our kids and nation” platform for the same politicians to stand on. It’s easier to say we’re winning an intangible war against an unlimited quantity of drugs than it is to fight against something a little more finite in supply — like illegal workers taking legal American workers jobs.
Posted by darfor on July 23, 2007 04:07 PMRuckman, just doing what you described 20 years ago would have been a HUGE step in the "War on Drugs". Funny how securing the border never occured to the federal government as the most competent stategy during the campaign of the "war on Drugs".
are all of you that stupid ? the government cares NOTHING about the war on drugs or the borders. they make money off of drugs (whether you want to believe it or not ) and they make MONEY off the unsecured borders!
there is no way in HELL any politician is going to kill off those cash cows!
NO WAY IN HELL!

I think you're right.
Fresh,
I think you're right.
Make drugs legal and treat the users? then where will all the counselors go to work?.?
Posted by Sharon B. on July 23, 2007 11:54 PMI have lost faith in our leaders altogether. I'm sick of the false and broken promises. There's not a candidate running for election that I would vote for, trust or expect anything constructive from. Sorry situation, huh? The scary thing is that I'm not alone. Are we just supposed to sit back and watch our country go down the toilet? Wish I had an answer. The drugs, gangsters, thugs and murderers (and terrorists?) continue to come across the borders along with those who just want to work, and no one seems to want to stop it except Tom Tancredo who constantly gets busted for his "unorthadox ideas and racist ways". The one and only polititian who means what he says. Go figure.
Posted by C on July 24, 2007 09:02 AMSharon and John you are onto something. But, Sharon its' not just the counselors that would suffer but the huge burueacracy that has grown up that has to defend its' turf - the DEA. That's why it will never happen.
Also, when was the last time you can ever remember our government admitting it has made a mistake?
Posted by RU Serious on July 24, 2007 08:03 PMAre you all kidding? I have heard nothing but outdated talking points in these posts. Drug enforcement IS working very nicely. Without current efforts, there would be more drug related death and violence. It's not the government's fault that we have a spoiled, moronic society that can't control their behavior.
