Alberto Gonzales
Friday, August 31 at 2:00 PM

Brian Stuckey of Denver writes:

The Rocky Mountain News castigation of Attorney General, Alberto Gonzalez, is hardly surprising. The editorial is nothing less than a slapdash attempt to discredit the Bush administration at the expense of an honorable public servant. The Attorney General was, in essence, the victim of a rash of “scandals” created by the Democrats for their own political gain. Yet, he was a strong proponent of defending our national security and foreign surveillance program, in spite of the defeatist agenda of his Democrat opponents in Congress. In short, the editorial is a disgrace.

READER COMMENTS

Thanks for this nicely written letter Brian, you must be taking lessons.

Al Gonzo was not a victim, nor the object of created scandals. Fredo was put under the spotlight when he bungled the coverup of eliminating US attorneys that failed to proceed with the politicizing of the justice department.

Firing US attorneys because they did not bring indictments that were simply not ready, and blaming it on said attorney's incompetance, is the issue. US attorneys are routinely fired at the begenning of each president's administration. Firing select attorneys that may be working on cases that could damage the Bush Regime and their cronies is still against the law.

Fredo's sniveling denials, and "I cannot recalls" did not add to the image of an "honorable public servant". All along he was Bush's waterboy, he came and rescued Bush in Texas from jury duty where Bush would have had to admit his DUI conviction under oath. Ever since he has been there to give legalese cover for illegal actions.

If political gain means cleaning the justice department of scum, such as Fredo, then it is hardly disgraceful.

Fredo stands as the worst attorney general ever to disgrace the office. The scandal that counts if the fact that he can't seem to tell the truth and is grossly incompetent.

If you like incompetent boot-lickers, then Gonzo is your man.

Posted by Romulus on August 31, 2007 02:52 PM

Lost in this discussion is the Bush Administration's total disdain for the truth. Lewis Libby is convicted of perjury by a jury of his peers, is sentenced by a "strict constructionist" judge (a Bush appointee) who applied the congressionally-passed sentencing guidelines and Bush commutes his prison sentence. How many other perjurers would get this treatment? Here's a bet: if the Justice Department's review of Mr. Gonzales leads to perjury charges, Bush will pardon him faster than you can say "Jack Robinson." The truth matters not a wit to this bunch - they care only about aggrandizing power.

What specific law was broken? When you serve in a presidential administration you serve at the will of the President. PERIOD. You can be let go for any reason. PERIOD. This is nothing more than a media made "serious" issue, scandal. Grasping at straws, fishing for scandal, crying the sky is falling.
Please, what specific law was broken? Not some made up law, a specfic law?

Perhapes 5:19 should review the Hatch Act for Federal Employees

http://www.osc.gov/ha_fed.htm

The Hatch Act restricts the political activity of executive branch employees of the federal government.

There are also a number of statutes in regards to election fraud. Voter fraud involves someone who is not qualified to vote trying gain access to the voting booth. Election fraud is the deliberate effort to influence an election through fraudulent schemes. Calling someone and telling them the wrong address for a voting precinct location which Republican operatives did in Virginia in 2006 is a form of election fraud because it causes the individual to go to the wrong location and then by the time they get to the right voting precinct the polls could be closed. This was a Dirty Tricks 2.0 affair that would have made Nixon proud. The objective was to use the power of the Department of Justice to open highly public frivolous investigations for partisan purposes right before an election so that voters would be influenced to vote for the Republican candidate because he/she wasn't tainted with an alleged impropriety. The reverse was also the case where potentially damaging investigations into Republican corruption which apparently runs deep would be ignored or delayed until after the election.

I guess 5:19 needs to ask himself how he would feel if Bill Clinton would have used the DOJ for partisan purposes to insure a permanent Democratic majority. Would it justice be served if the DOJ was used for this kind election fraud?

Brian:
Lets say your right. Does that mean he is a quiter? And if so he showed he is weak. That is the last thing we need as a AG. Bye Bye!!

The specific law about which I wrote is perjury: knowingly giving false testimony under oath. The oath to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth is at the heart of the American legal system.
Whether or not any law was or was not broken re: firing U.S. Attorneys, Mr. Gonzales was obliged to testify truthfully. Did he or didn't he? I'll take the word of James Comey, as straight a shooter as I've ever seen. I submit that Mr. Gonzales committed perjury before Congress.

Posted by muleman on August 31, 2007 07:53 PM

muleman -- he may or may not have committed perjury. Just "knowing" it, and proving it in a court of law (or impeachment court) as actually happened with the full intent to deceive, are two different things. Just be satisfied that he was jettisoned and should be replaced with someone a little more ethically oriented.

Hanks,

The offer still stands.

The other possibility is that the firing of the prosecutors was used to conceal the fact that the White House wanted to get rid of Carol Lam before she expanded the investigation into bribery, corruption and war profiteering that started with Duke Cunningham. It was believed that there could be as many as twenty other Congressional members involved but Lam was removed from office and her successor, a Bush loyalist, closed down the investigation. At this point in time we still don't know who created the list of attorneys to be fired. If there is any truth that the firings were orchestrated to prevent a wider corruption investigation then you would have obstruction of justice and accessory to a crime charges to deal with.

http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/013023.php

Perjury appears to be the crime du jour for this crowd. There are several internal DOJ investigations being pursued in regards to Gonzales presentations before Congress. We will probably never know what shenanigans Gonzales got away with as Attorney General but what we do know is that he was made in the same mold as the rest of the Bush appointments: unqualified for the position, incompetent in the execution of his duties, dishonest to the American people about his intentions and ultimately a disgrace to the high ethical standards that are suppose to be part of the Republican Party.

Posted by Wes on September 1, 2007 09:20 AM

The issue is the importance of the truth. When Bill Clinton lied under oath about - what? - he was impeached. I wish he had been prosecuted instead. If that had happened and if he had been convicted, I'd have paid for the jail cell.
The issue is the truth. No one, irrespective or station or party, is excused from lying under oath. I'll respect a person's good deeds but will never give anyone a pass for lying under oath.

Posted by muleman on September 1, 2007 09:29 AM

doesn`t anyone care that the people close to the President have such poor memories?

Maybe we should buy them some voice activated tape recorders.

Posted by Sharon B. on September 1, 2007 10:30 AM

If Alberto Gonzales had been a Democratic appointment the Dems would be pissing themselves because they are so mad that he was lynched this way.

Posted by on September 1, 2007 01:09 PM

Oh, and the Republicans would been called every racist slogan in the Democratic talking points booklet

Posted by on September 1, 2007 01:11 PM

So the right and left are far happier as bomb throwers than in trying to restore confidence in government. Pathetic.

mulemolester,Are you the new village idiot. This is Saturday night, head for Cheeseman Park for the stroll, with drew, charles b.,og,mikey and sharon b. and the rest of the un-informed people who refuse to accept facts.Hint: sharon will let you borrow a outfit. She doesn't know anything that is going on in the U.S. or any other country but she is nice and I'm sure she will lend you something.

Posted by Keith on September 1, 2007 08:50 PM

Keith claimed "Because of Gonzalas American lives got saved"

Yeah?
Got a list handy of who was saved, or is it just that you believe that somebody must have been saved by it since that's what the claimed objective was?

Bit credulous, aren't you?

Posted by Bango Skank on September 1, 2007 08:52 PM

bango skank,By allowing our President to used constitutional powers to protect Americans living in this country, living abroard and our troops. He fired attorneys who were not taking the American people safety in there interest.Under Reno ,9/11 was made possible with the majority of help from clinton, albright and tennet.Ashcroft and Gonzalas took the corruption out of the Attorney Generals office.Check the facts, something that you obvious can't comprehend.

Posted by Keith on September 1, 2007 09:15 PM

Keith, so shall I take that as a "no", then?
You don't actually have any facts to offer on how many and which Americans have been saved by the phone-tapping, as you claimed.

As a defense, however, you claim that Reno did something worse. Perhaps this makes sense to you, but it is actually a fallacious argument. It doesn't matter whether, or to what degree Reno was better or worse.
I doubt you could claim that giving direct instructions to favor a particular political party's interests was "[taking] corruption out of the Attorney Generals office" as you claim.

Check the facts yourself mate, and not just those that you cherry-pick to suite what you prefer to believe.

Try again Keith, this one was a dud.

bangoskank,I can't deal with a idiot who does not know any facts. You are definitely a liberal,in plain words ,a dumb-ass.

Keith, for a Red blooded American Patriot, you sure seem to know what the scene is all about at Cheeseman Park? Are you as well versed in secret hand gestures in public restrooms?

Keith tried again with ” bangoskank,I can't deal with a idiot who does not know any facts. You are definitely a liberal,in plain words ,a dumb-ass.”

I take it that by “facts” you mean only things that disagree with what you prefer to believe. You are right about one thing though, I am certainly some kind of liberal. Which is something to be proud of really. I stand in the crowd that generates the bulk of innovation, creative work, and entrepreneurship. What would you like to claim; religious fundamentalism and bigotry perhaps?

As far as the dumbass crack, is that the best you can do?
If we are going to insult each other, I require a bit more competition than that.

It seems as if a number of this blog's participants have joined Rush Limbaugh's penchant for inventing personal nicknames for people whose ideas they dislike. I guess that's the nature of today's discourse. Oh, I'll fight to the death to protect your right to say these things. However, I'll do so from the with this anonymous webname and address. After all, the AG who has saved lives and his boss would like nothing more than to send all of us who disagree to black prisons where we can be subjected to the "functional equivalent" of torture - in which case I'll have died for the cause. How sad it all is.

Posted by muleman on September 2, 2007 04:13 PM

Keith, Hank, Brian Stuckey, and the rest never have and never will provide facts to back up the drivel they spit and spew because they don't have facts, but only talking points and regurgitated, debunked garbage from Fox Noise, Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Lielly, Sean Hannity, Ann "Man" Coulter, Micheal Savage, Newsmax, Drudge Report, ETC., ETC., ETC! They're clones of each other too...probably wid-up parrots that "parrot" this drivel.

Posted by Keith on September 2, 2007 07:25 PM

Bryan "Stoogie", you have it all wrong. Fredo is not the victim here. The American People are the victims. Not only of Fredo, but of the entire Bush Administration. Too bad that you live with your head in a dark hole which prevents you from seeing clearly. Until you have something important to state, why don't you just STFU!

You are correct about one thing though. That is that he was a strong proponet of doing things illegal and/or unconstitutional. What a good example don't you think.
