Barry Bonds

Leroy M. Martinez of Denver writes:

This is the saddest day in baseball when a steroid junkie brakes a homerun record. I am sure that Hank Aaron is sad and yes even Babe Ruth is turning over in his grave. Thank God that I do not like baseball. I would rather watch golf. I sure there is no steroids there.

All of pro sports are simply a modern day rendition of the old Roman CIrcus and coliseum games. The participants are just the modern gladiators keeping the general population sedated and not worrying about what is going on around them. You worry more about someone like Bareiod Bonds, you worry less about how the government is emphasizing their little power struggles over doing anything positive for the country.

Pablum for adults.

That's the problem, dude; too many people are lulled to sleep thinking all is well as our masters provide the mental heroin (the modern gladiators -- we even get to pay for their new, expensive arenas) to keep us numbed as we led by the proverbial nose to pay homage and lucre to those in power.

And for those not prone to watching adults playing children's games, we are provided the inane version of fantasy land through television.

Go back to sleep, Jeff.

Don't forget about the overpriced products we get to pay for so those corporate sponsors of the gladiator games can hawk their products to us. Who do you think pays those ludicrous salaries to the overgrown children playing; think about it the next time you pay for your groceries at the store.

I wish the Broncos and other "professional sports teams" - whores - would leave town. I understand LA (a real LA LA land) needs a football. Think they would take the Broncos off our hands if we made them take the other whores with them?

It's true anonymous 4:56 PM! But can I just play fantasy football until I finish my pablum??

Funny, I am aware of what is going on in the world about me and I also, LOVE sports! Go figure!!!.....and, GO BRONCOS!!!

Yes it is a sad day when the pass off this buisness as the working mans sport. Overpriced tickets, drinks, food, parking to mention a little off the top. For those who sit and drool, fantasise over millionares scratching themselves inpublic is very sad.

Oh and by the way there was a recent steroid scandel on the PGA.

I am not a Bonds fan yet I can't help wondering why Bonds shoulders all the hatred for the steroids era? The record stands and will be seen in the light of various records set in other eras that are aberrations of each era. The 30's had a ridiculous number of high avg high RBI records set (Hack Wilson comes to mind immediately, asterisk the RBI record?), do we throw them out because the ball was juiced? No, we look at them in the context they were made. We need to do the same in this era. This era is full of players who did the juice, McGwire, Sosa, Caminetti, Palmerio and dozens more. Do we re-write the record books? Do we throw out Caminetti's, Canseco's, Giambi's, Sosa's and Bonds' MVPs and award them to the 2nd or 3rd place finishers? Pull all their stats from the Baseball record books? Is Babe Ruth still the single season record holder since Maris played more games/at bats, and Sosa, McGwire and Bonds were juiced? Or do we asterisk Ruth for never have to play night games or bat against quality minority pitchers? Another asterisk for a rightfield line under 300 feet? Should we throw our Aaron's last 30 or so homers because they were hit under the DH abomination? An asterisk for Henry for all the extra at-bats, or playing in a stadium known as 'the Launching Pad'?
If we hate 'cheaters' so much why did we elect Gaylord Perry and Don Sutton into the HoF knowing they cheated with spitters their entire careers? Or allow in Whitey Ford and the cut baseballs he illegally got players out for? Somehow their 'cheating' is laughed off as gamesmanship and craftiness.
Illegal drugs? In the 60's amphetamines were rampant in all clubhouses, bowls full of 'greenies' to help pep up hung-over players, make them awake enuff and super alert to play the game. Throw out the 60s players records? And the Babe drank how much illegal beer?
I wonder, if Bonds had been friendly with the Press like Sosa and Big Mac would he be vilified less? Does joking and drinking with reporters after games make them less guilty than Bonds?

Actually I think the saddest day in baseball was in the mid-90's when after going on strike they ended up just cancelling the entire season. I used to watch a lot of baseball but I haven't watched a game since. Of course the ratings were terrible until the home runs started to fly. (McGwire, Sosa etc) The owners are completely complicit in the steroid debacle.
