Dangers of nuclear warfare
These are needs that challenge this world in arms.” “We are ready, in short, to dedicate our strength to serving the needs, rather than the fears, of the world.”
George W. Bush and many of his conservative supporters believe that the United States as the preeminent power in the world should use its military supremacy to eliminate real or potential enemies in this “War on Terror.” It worries us that the strategic and tactical nuclear weapons in our arsenal have not been ruled out for potential use. Now, before it is too late we, Republicans and Democrats alike, should heed President Eisenhower’s wise and cautionary words about the dangers of nuclear warfare, and aggressively seek diplomatic solutions to international disputes.

Posted by on August 23, 2007 03:23 PMMay I suggest that you obtain a copy of, and read, "On Thermonuclear Warfare", by Herman Kahn. That'll really get you blood pounding as you'll come to the realization that the real threat of nuclear won't be deterred by the concept of mutually assured destruction. The real threat of nukes come from a rogue group, or nation, who believes it's righteous to die for the glory of Allah while destroying infidels, and joining Him in Paradise.
I don't believe any American politician on either side will opt to make a first strike with nukes against the rogues. That would be a definite invitation for immediate and multiple retaliatory strikes from many geographical origins.
Worry about the rogues becoming wound too tight and electing to make the "big strike" -- or two, or three-- against the Great Satan for the glory of...

An informative read is "The Day After Midnight," Based on a report by the Office of Technology Assessment, 1982, Cheshire Books. Interesting what a 1 megaton air burst over Detroit would do.

TEHRAN, Iran -- Iran has developed a new 2,000-pound "smart" bomb, state-run television reported Thursday, the latest in a recent series of announcements heralding new weapons systems.
The guided bomb, named Qased or Messenger, can be deployed by Iran's aging U.S.-made F-4 and F-5 fighter jets and will be officially unveiled next week, said the broadcast quoting a Defense Ministry statement.
Iran often announces new weapons for its arsenal, but the United States maintains that while the Islamic Republic has made some strides, many of these statements are exaggerations.
Iran launched its own arms development program during its 1980-88 war with Iraq in response to a U.S.-led arms embargo. Since 1992, the country has produced its own tanks, armored personnel carriers, and missiles.
Earlier this month, Iran said it had started industrial-scale production of its own fighter jet, known as Azarakhsh or Lightning, to upgrade its elderly air force, much of which dates from before the 1979 revolution.
Iran last year test-fired a "ultra-horizon" missile, two powerful torpedoes and a Fajr-e Darya missile capable of avoiding radars and hitting several targets simultaneously using multiple warheads during large military maneuvers in the Persian Gulf.

Posted by Heather on August 23, 2007 10:13 PMIt is amazing how the fear of nukes kept the world somewhat from killing eachother and ended, or at least stopped the Korean war. I do hope and pray they never be used, it would bring a living hell to those who survived. Also, to whoever wrote under the name of the THRESHER, I am impressed that a deadman can write, the sub went down with all hands.
Posted by Nick on August 23, 2007 11:47 PMNick, my brother was on 593 sub in April 63. I use that moniker in rememberance of him.

Mission accomplished then, the whole idea is to make you nice and compliant by frightening you. Would it make you feel better that the Iranians are even more afraid of you?
Not the least because of all the talk about using preemptive nuclear strikes.

Bango, why dont you go back to wherever you came from you American hating , jihad loving POS! Do you celebrate DEATH TO AMERICA DAY every year like the Iranians do?How nice for you!Why dont you move there? Maybe you would still be able to contribute to this blog, that is if your hands and tongue arent chopped off by a much more peace loving and superior form of govt. Whats your immigration status? How would you like to be deported to Iran?Wait, let me guess you found some fat homely U.S. skank you knocked up and conned into marrying to get citizenship, just like the mexicans do.Go home already,we dont want or need you here.
Stephen King Is Overated
Hooyah, rich pickin’s.
”Bango, why dont you go back to wherever you came from you American hating , jihad loving POS! “
That should be “don’t” and “from [comma] you”, and you need to put a hyphen between “American” and “hating” and between “jihad” and “loving”, and since it’s a question, you need a “?” not an “!”.
Anyway, I have better things to do than go back, I don’t hate America, and I don’t love jihad – in fact most religions strike me as a bit childish and stupid.
As for being a “POS”, that may be true, but hey, POSs need to live too, y’know?
”Do you celebrate DEATH TO AMERICA DAY every year like the Iranians do?How nice for you!”
Nope.
”Why dont you move there? Maybe you would still be able to contribute to this blog, that is if your hands and tongue arent chopped off by a much more peace loving and superior form of govt. “
Because I don’t like religious states, nor do I like totalitarianism, and nor do I see any gain in being there.
”Whats your immigration status?”
Green-card
Apparently my skills are valued.
”How would you like to be deported to Iran?”
Not much, thanks.
Overzealous religious types just aren’t my cup of tea, if you follow my drift.
”Wait, let me guess you found some fat homely U.S. skank you knocked up and conned into marrying to get citizenship, just like the mexicans do.”
Nah, it was a management transfer, and although I try to put brains and personality ahead of looks, I must admit that I tend to only hook up with the good looking and trim women.
Vain, I know, but there it is.
”Go home already,we dont want or need you here.”
You might not but my employer does - hence the nice paycheck and benefits.
I don’t really have a “home” country as such, I go wherever things take me.
So cheer up, I am likely to move on when something more interesting comes along.
09:22 PM, I was surprised at your posting time. I thought the insane asylum closed the computer room at 8PM.
