Dem hopefuls should offer condolences
The Democratic Party is celebrating its presidential candidates in forums across the country. I ask that a new baseline of behavior be offered to the candidates.
My son was killed in Iraq on Feb. 22. I have never been called by any of the Democratic candidates to express their condolences or support. They all claim to care about the troops; they all say they want what is best for the troops. But, having called Sens. Clinton, Obama, Dodd and Biden (as well as Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid), none of them will speak with me. In July, 79 soldiers paid the highest price. The leading candidate of the Democrats should be able in a month to call the families of those they claim to support.
Leaders in Congress should be speaking to every dad and mom of every son or daughter who has sacrificed for this great country.
Call me! Please. Is that too much to ask?
Kris Hager, Pueblo West
You're right Kris. Dodd, Biden, and Reid haven't found anything they are willing to die for. Politicians attending funerals of our fallen heroes is nothing but a fashion statement. 3 months before we illegally invade Iraq-NAM, a Desert Storm veteran committed suicide (terminally ill from sarin gas posioning) at the Denver VA Hospital, where he shot himself in the head. DeGette, Allard, and Nightmare Campbell, swept his death under the proverbial rug. Federal law requires that "ANY" death on federal property, must be reported to the US Congress. These bipartisan political hacks ignored that law, because they didn't want to whet our appetites for Arab blood. Due to this political cover-up, this warrior may have even met his "maker", without being afforded the proper VA burial "pomp and circumstance". I often wonder, if his mom knows that he is dead. His creditors surely don't know. DeGette, Allard, and Campbell suppressed this event and in violation of the law, his death isn't recorded in the print media either. I have made Rep. Tancredo aware of these transgressions in writing.
Posted by centennialslavebehinddacottoncurtain on August 21, 2007 02:12 AMJust out of curiosity, how many members of the GOP sent condolences? (A rubber stamped letter from Bush doesn't count.)
As far as Dems who "haven't found anything they are willing to die for" - I suggest you look at how many have served as opposed to members of the current administration: the president, who can't prove he served all his guard duty during Viet Nam (magically, he paperwork was lost/destroyed), Cheney, who got 5 (five!) deferments, then got married. The only member of the GOP that I am sure served is McCain - and during the 2000 primaries, Rove and the Bush machine alleged that he must be too crazy to server in the White House since he spent years as a POW.
This administration is made up of people who are willing to send your children to war for what they have said is the greatest threat ever - but are unwilling to reinstate the draft (heaven forbid that anyone in their families suffer what you have suffered) and give their rich buddies tax breaks, so that they your children & their children will be paying for this war in taxes for decades to come.
Posted by Mary on August 21, 2007 04:00 AMmary grow up and get off your liberal left socialist adgenda. there isnt a draft because there are a lot of true Americans who are willing to sign up and join the military without being drafted.
how about the admin of FDR and JFK LBJ they had a draft and sent a lot of young kids to war without a choice.
Kris I am sorry for your loss and I am also proud of your son for his service to us all.
Posted by on August 21, 2007 05:17 AMMary , suffers from bush hatred. No matter what happens or may be going on in her life that is bad. She willblame Bush for this. If she stubs her toe she will claim the CIA came in and moved her coffee table during the night while "spying on her".
Kris you make a valid point. Especiallty during this extended campaign year. The conntacting of the families would not only be thoughful but equal to kissing babies on the campaign trail.
As many young brave Americans see through the transparicy of the left and VOLUNTEER for service, all Americans need to take a long look at who wants to be commander and chief.
Who really shows leadership qualities and who is just pandering.
Posted by on August 21, 2007 06:18 AMIf the draft is reinstituted it will be done by the left. The leading Democrat candidates for Commander-in-Chief would compel military service and probably with women serving in combat roles.
Government coercion is the default position in the pursuit of their goal of redefining Amercica.
Posted by James Jones on August 21, 2007 07:10 AM5:17 I assume there are no 'true-Americans' in this blog since teya re here supporting the War instead of in Iraq actually fighting it? We are not far from a draft since many of the kids in now were duped into enlisting due to the wave of nationalism following 9/11..they enlisted to capture Bin Laden and fight terrorist, litte did they know that the US woudl abandon that and declare War on Iraq instead. If s many are eager to enlist and serve, why are there huge bonuses being offered for enlistments? Why are soldiers being stretched for longer tours of duty?
The Dems should apologize to parents of killed soldiers since the last war vote and for not cutting of the War funds in the spring. Bush and the GOP and every DEM who voted for War should apologize for the entire Iraq invasion and every American death encountered there.

No, the Mary's of the world aren't calling the shots quite yet so we're not a 100% militarized nation.
It's true that the best and brightest serve their country in the military and we honor them for that service. Neither they, nor their choice to serve should ever be demeaned.
But most of us are doing our part by carrying on with ordinary lives - raising families, making a living. That sort of thing.
It is through the sacrifice of a few that so many are able to enjoy the blessings of liberty.
Kris, Please know that we are forever grateful.
Posted by James Jones on August 21, 2007 08:46 AMWant to know how many military funerals Bush and Cheney have attended?
Out of more than 3,600 killed in Iraq, the president and his henchman have been "too busy" to attend a single one.
In the meantime, Bush issued a media gag order on photographs of flag-draped coffins. Apparently, Bush can't handle the truth and he wants to hide it from everyone else.

Thank you for sharing your loss with us. I am deeply saddened that your son was killed. He is a hero and always will be,but that doesn't excuse the dishoner the people whom you have called and not returned your calls, have brought to your sons memory. I am sure he served with honor and the people of this nation who love this country are forever in your debt.
May you find peace in your family, friends and neighbors.Consider me a friend and I will be with you in spirit and remember the sacrifice you and your son have given. I am forever grateful.
One other thing I would like to ask.If it's to painful I'll understand.
What was your son's name and what was he like? Can you share him with us?
Sincerely.
Can I Get an Amen
Tree Hugger are you implying that those who enlist now are still brainwashed and under the influance of nationalistic pride? Even 6 years later.
The point that the Bush administration banned the filming of the flag drapped coffins was to not trivialis this solemn event. There is no worse or greatr honor for the military to tend to thier fallen brothers and sisters. Something you obviously will never understand.
I just hope that no tradgedy falls you or your family and it is put on film and spread around the world for people to gawk at, criticse or make fun of.
Posted by on August 21, 2007 09:37 AMHero: a man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities.
I dull the hook you might hang me by saying I have a son in the military; however, the word hero is used too loosley. Bush's army has lowered the standards considerably and enacted a $bonus to attract even the criminal element as canon fodder.
"Call me! Please. Is that too much to ask?" cries Kris Hager. My answer is yes. It is too much to ask. If my son comes back in a box I don't want phony lip service from strangers telling me what a hero my son was.
My son qualified for the Air Force which has a much higher entrance exam than the Army and I don't see my son as a hero. The dead are transmogrified into heroes which is just as phony as transmogrifying a Jew baby "from the loins of David" into a god.
The only soldier who could come close to being a hero is Pat Tillman who gave up 20 $million a year to serve and the Bush administration did what it does best: Lie! Lie! Lie.
I don't want no goddamn Jesus freak president or Jesus freak politicians conveying their grief unto me for the loss of my son. Jesus sent Bush to Iraq; let the bastard tell Bush to bring home our illiterate and ignorant soldiers.
Bastard: Illegitimate; born without benefit of clergy; conception when David rapes Mary and the offspring is a Jew baby whose parents are not married.
Flog me but I feel better.
To Anonymous Coward at 9:37 a.m.
I'll have you know that I retired from the Air Force last February after 21 years of service. I was in the Gulf War in 1991, and I served two tours in support of the current "War on Terror". (Four months in Al Udeid, Qatar and four months in Balad, Iraq at Camp Anaconda.)
If I would have been killed during my overseas deployments, I would prefer that media take pictures of my flag-draped coffin being loaded onto a plane.
Showing photos of our fallen comrades-in-arms is by no means "trvializing" their sacrifice. On the contrary -- it honors them.
On the other hand -- hiding those coffins (and the truth) from the American public means that thier deaths are not news worthy. That is a lie, yet that is what the current administration demands.
Never before in American history has there been less of an outcry for our war dead -- and that's just the way that the chimp-in-chief likes it.

Instead, the military isn't meeting it's recruitment goals, they're enlisting criminals and thugs, we are no safer now than we were just prior to 9/11 (Bush's own National Intelligence Estimate said that, not some "liberal" blogger-message to Hank/Keith), and we're ill-equipped to respond to another serious threat (Russia or China come to mind) because of our detour in Iraq. Let's see the cool aid swillers who spend every waking moment of their day posting here come up with real evidence that our government treats our military like anything better than tools to advance whatever agenda they happen to have.

Posted by KW on August 21, 2007 02:07 PMMy Condolences to the Democrats:
The latest Gallup Poll found that approval of the legislative branch of the federal government hit 18 percent in an Aug. 13-16 survey. Those disapproving of Congress stands at 76 percent.
Gallup says the approval number matches the low-water mark hit in 1992, in the midst of a check-bouncing scandal in what was a Democrat-led Congress. That scandal was among the reasons credited for the sweeping Republican takeover in 1994.
The poll surveyed 1,019 adults aged 18 and older, and has a 3 percent margin of error.
This month's congressional approval rating dipped nine points from a Gallup poll a month earlier, and has fallen steadily since the Democratic takeover in January, when the approval rating jumped to 35 percent.
But the current approval rating isn't radically different from the 21 percent approval rating in December 2006, a month after the election but before the official handover took place.
The poll shows Democrats' and independent voters' opinions have darkened in the last month, and now there are no statistically significant differences in the approval rating broken down among Republicans, Democrats and independents.
The highest historical approval for Congress, according to Gallup, was just after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks: Approval soared to 85 percent.

Charles B - I wasn't making a case, simply sharing the words of the democrats that are realizing they'd better start showing a little optimism regarding Iraq lest they be caught in the myriad of lies that have been reported and repeated ad nauseam thus far.

It seems telling when you read the posts for those who are opposed to the war. There are not any true loving words for a family who has lost their son. It could simply be said that they are opposed to these views, yet sorry for our loss. There are instead very hateful, nasty, demeaning words and feelings . . . it tells much of their thought patterns and hearts . . . sad. It truly is all about hatred for them.
Josh new, after being over in Iraq, that this was a battle that had to be fought, if not now in the future. Josh wanted to save his son from having to go. He cared deeply about the people of Iraq and they were and still are thankful for our prescence, yet it must be difficult to trust us when our nation is so divided. I can only imagine what the situation might be if our nation had stood together from the beginning and supported the mission . . . I would guarantee a much better Iraq at this point.
