Evans over Santa Fe downright scary now
With everything going on in Minnesota this week and last, my guess is those drivers who travel on Denver’s Evans Avenue over Santa Fe Drive have had some heart-stopping moments.
Anyone who has ever sat through a light on that particular bridge has felt the bridge move and shake as a large vehicle passes by in the next lane. It is very disconcerting.
However, now that we’ve seen an actual bridge collapse due to structural deficiencies, the drive across that bridge has become downright scary. From the reports on TV, this is not the only bridge in the metro area that raises concerns.
It seems that our priorities in this country are skewed. We spend billions on going to war, and then billions more on rebuilding the infrastructure of what we have just destroyed, and neglect the needs of the infrastructure of our own country.
How many times must history repeat itself before we learn the lesson? My Mom used to say “charity begins at home.” Maybe there was some wisdom behind those words.
Sherrie Ferdinand, Littleton
maybe its lack of maintenance is due to the fact that denver has too much charity at home with all the free things they pass out to the illigals, and therefore dont have the money to take care of their roads.
Posted by on August 10, 2007 05:04 AMIllegals "double-whammy". Jordan, Ritter, and Owens (BILLARY and Bill Gates posse), siphoned off taxpayers dollars and gave them to criminal illegal Hindu-Indians. Jordan scammed us, in violation of both federal and state appropriation laws, when he illegally outsourced Metro State College's (MSC) hiring and recruiting function to Dataman, Inc. (India based and owned, located in DTC). The US Congress has only authorized USDOL/OFCCP Secy. Chao, to contract with "foreign nationals".
I applied for MSC's VP info tech job and I encountered these Indian thugs (supposedly INS-hi tech employees), who could barely speak English. As the "decider", they decided to ignore my "FEDERAL" 10 point job preference, which I was awarded for my injuries sustained in 3 deployments to Vietnam. Blacks like me, historically have only worried about the KKK, these Indians have replaced the KKK, and they are heaping economic murder on unsuspecting black folks.
My NAD-less posse: The Denver NAACP, Fitz-Gerald and Groff, T. Carroll, Jones, Salazar-Milliner, Allard-Poole, Marshall, etc., should investigate this issue and prosecute these criminals.

The only legislator who has never voted for UNConstitutional spending on things such as undeclared wars and unnecessary foreign aid for nations that would prefer to destroy us.
Posted by Jay on August 10, 2007 08:04 AMWhen we detract from our war on terror efforts, we encourage the enemy.
With each collapsed bridge, freedom advances, We must keep our eye on the ball. Otherwise we will have to submit to Islam while we drive on new bridges.
Therefore we must not fret over dangerous bridges and focus on bringing freedom to the middle east.
Posted by Coal Bear 23 on August 10, 2007 08:40 AMOur war on terror is not currently focused on the 20,000 (extremely conservative estimate) criminals world wide who are the problem. If you truly believe that it makes sense to commit $1T and our most precious resources, our young, on what we are doing in Iraq then you need to move to the Evans bridge until it does drop.
Money for bridges comes from the federal pool (our taxes) of money, spending of which is decided by the state of Colorado and the city of Denver has little to do with it. So make a call to your state representative , your neighbor, and do a little lobbying. Redress of grievance is your right and the only ones trying to exercise this right are the the ones who want our tax money the most. You figure it out.
So let Denver spend its money on helping people of whatever nationality it sees fit. Helping people is a Christian doctrine. It is also an Islamic belief and you will find it spelled-out in all of the religious books in the world. It is one of the best features of organized religion on this planet that we SHARE with 6 billion others. You may be in a position that you need charity from one of these neighbors in the future. Or maybe your children will need it. Whatever the situation may be stop being the "ugly American".

Everyone knows they hate us for our bridges. That's why we're building bridges over there--so we don't have to build them over here.
Or something like that...
Posted by Yep on August 10, 2007 09:25 AMBridges are supposed to move, it's called “elasticity”. But I can see how your ignorance of the physical world leaves you disconcerted, when you don’t understand it’s just “downright scary" and you have to look for the nearest scapegoat to placate your ignorance, whether it's Bush, Illegal Immigrants, or those damn evil Indians keepin' the black man down.
Posted by We don't neen no math and science on August 10, 2007 10:02 AMIsn't this the bridge that was designed incorrectly to begin with? Seems to me it sat half-finished for some time while they figured out how to salvage what they had already started. If memory serves, that's why there's a traffic light sitting on the top.
Posted by Michael R. on August 10, 2007 10:17 AMAnyone who has been in Denver a while knows that the bridge in question was built to move. There's nothing wrong with it.

Hey if you think the Evans street bridge moves, try sitting on the Golden Gate Bridge during rush hour and a wind storm. Dramamine anyone?
Isn't it DISGUSTING that our dear leader thinks that a bipartisan bill to raise gas taxes to pay for backlogged infrastructure maintenance shows "mis-guided priorities"?
It demonstrates adherence to ideology (Taxes = Bad no matter what) compared to political and economic reality. (Political-people are willing to pay to not die in a bridge collapse, Economic-crumbling infrastructure is bad for the economy.)
For this ideological rigidity, $1T debt gets passed to future generations for an Iraq war that people might have been willing to pay for with their tax money.
Posted by on August 10, 2007 11:31 AMTransportation funding in Colorado is $785 MILLION for FY 2006 and that number is just for CONSTRUCTION, MAINTENANCE, and OPERATIONS, according to the CDOT budget available at:
http://www.dot.state.co.us/budget/FY06%20CDOT%20Budget%204-21-05%20WEB.pdf
We currently have enough money, resources, and personnel to maintain and construct our roadways here in Colorado. The only question of priorities is why do we continue to raid that budget for non-transportation related items? Wouldn't it be more appropriate to use the money appropriated for a specific item, than to remove that money and spend it somewhere else, just to skirt TABOR?
Posted by quid pro quo on August 10, 2007 12:51 PMTo 40 acres,
Doesn't it bother you that you get a 10 point military preference, and then just expect to be awarded a position?
What is your background that you feel you were more qualified for the position, without knowing the qualifications of the other applicants?
Do you understand how a Visa system works in the United States? That before a foreign national may be awarded a position, that there must be documented information demonstrating that within the local and regional employment pool, qualifying candidates have either not applied for the position, or do not meet AT LEAST MINIMUM qualifications?
Or, do you just prefer to piss and moan about your perceived treatment? Maybe you didn't get the job because you are freakin NUTS!

Posted by on August 10, 2007 01:39 PMYou Owe Me,
40acres probably took his attitude into the interview with him. Who'd hire a nut-job like that?
You Owe Me and elwood:
I am in complete agreement with your synopsis of 40acres... I can't imagine hiring a man like this; so full of hostility, sense of entitlement and racism to work on my team. And, I'm a black vet, with combat experience, who went to college on the GI Bill after I served.
I've never asked for preference for myself based on anything other than what I bring to the table in my abilities. And when I interview someone for a position in my department I focus only on the credentials of the candidate which address the work to be done. For anyone who might demand "extra credit" such as 40acres..., I automatically disqualify them from future consideration.
Posted by Thor on August 10, 2007 04:54 PMQuit with the constant entitlements, giveaways, Welfare, Nanny State bullshit and get government back where it belongs; taking care of the infrastructure and defense of America.
Let privates and charity take tare of the freeloaders.
Posted by clyde on August 11, 2007 12:53 AMClyde, Thank you for telling it like it really is.Now sit back and wait for the people to call you a bad human, bigot or racist.
That's the norm for people who can't handle the truth.
Can I smack them for you? Just one?LOL
As for the private charities, like the Catholic church that takes from the poor and gives to the rich, they have to keep the money train going mostly from illegals and Latinos to pay for their preists who like little boys and girls.
Their getting low on money so they are encouraging them to have many ,many children. Gotta keep those donations coming in.
