Health care for children
Last week the U.S. House of Representatives approved a $160 billion entitlement bill as its version of the reauthorization of the SCHIP (State Children’s Health Insurance Program). Bill Johnson’s August 3 column and Thomas Kopfensteiner’s August 8 letter to the editor both affirmed the critical need to pass such a bill to cover additional uninsured children. Wrongheadedly,The House has expanded the reauthorization far beyond its original intent of providing health care for uninsured children. The House version allows coverage for families in certain states who make as much as four times the federal poverty level and can afford private insurance, lures these higher income families from their current private coverage to the government program (the Congressional Budget Office estimates that 2.1 million people who have private insurance will be forced into this nationalized health care), partially underwrites the new entitlements with $37.1 billion in cuts to Medicare providers, removes the current safeguards meant to keep illegal immigrants from accessing SCHIP and establishes $400 million for translation services for non-English-speakers.
Ironically, some families at the high end of the proposed income scale would receive support from SCHIP while being subject to the Alternative Minimum Tax! What a shame the House has jeopardized the immediate passage of this most worthy reauthorization by loading it up with costly and extraneous baggage.
This letter has not been edited.
as long as it doesnt include illegals I am ok with it. but in all reality it probably covers illegals.
and guess what there is NOTHING we can do about it

We can do something as it has to pass the senate and Bush has promised a veto if they don't remove the illegal provisions and the ones letting people up to 24 years of age be considered children. This is a good program and needs to be renewed as it addresses the uninsured children and then there is coverage available that can be tailored to a specific group with special needs.
I wold probably be very happy to insure my grand daughter under this program instead of Kaiser, which is really bad insurance, or Medicaid. I do not support socialized medicine even when they change its name to something like single payer.
Let your representatives know that you want this program stripped of those who can afford private insurance, illegals and people older than 18.
We just need to get the word out and the people can be heard since the politicians are trying to get re-elected.
Posted by momma y on August 16, 2007 03:51 PMawww yes, More tax bucks for other people. How about this. You have kids, you provide for them and stop asking your neighbors to pay for your mistakes.
I pay for mine and you pay for yours. Sounds fair.
Posted by Dravur on August 16, 2007 04:30 PMand dont forget the dum in colorado politics are raising taxes again on smokes to fund kiddies health insurance. I bet they have the best there is pretty soon.
better yet if you have kids do like the rest of us have, get your life in order and take care of your family and keep your hand out of my pocket.
I will support this only on the condition that the coverage extends to fetuses, and not to living, breathing children, who are worthless.
Posted by on August 16, 2007 09:59 PMI'm tired of paying for other people's children. There are so many irresponsible people having children. They can't have just one they gotta have 5 or 6.Planned Parenthood is not doing their job. They are funded with tax payers dollars.
I blame the Catholic church also because the same idiots that believe they will go to hell if they use birth control believe it's ok to be in this country illegally and break any law they want.Go forth and multiply,we need the money for our preists.
Who pays for all this nonsense? The people who responsibly have children they can afford.People who do not have children until they are ready to take on the huge responsibility.
Well, I'm tired of my family's standard of living going down to pay more and more taxes for irresponsible people.
I have an idea. The State Government with the funding of the Federal Government ,open one hospital and one out patient clinic per state. All free ,all the time for people with no insurance.California might have to have 2.They can only go their, not to regular ER's or clinics.
Long waits you say, well them not having insurance is causing long waits for people that do have insurance.
Any other hospitals or clinics that want to open and give free care to people go ahead, but they get no public money. The churches can oick up the slack.
