Less taxes & minimal government
We have been sold the idea of less taxes and minimal government. This has resulted in politicians being elected, but the outcome has been “less effective government". It appears that we have not had a halt in the growth of programs, but a decrease in the quality of many necessary government services. With a growing awareness that government is “broken” as we observe falling bridges, the Katrina mess going on and on and waits of many hours for getting a drivers’ license. The theory of strangling government through cutting taxes has strangled necessary services, while we continue to have bridges to nowhere! It is time we took back our government from the “lunatic fringes” of both parties. Most moderates, who Lightly lean left or right of the middle are not pleased with Sean Penn, Rosie O’Donnell, Anne Coulter, Pat Robertson or Jerry Falwell speaking on our behalf. We are not pleased that neither the republicans or the democrats have concerned themselves with the internet as a cesspool in which our children are drowning. We are not pleased that neither the democrats or republicans have concerned themselves with our health and especially that of our children. We are not pleased with the divisive approach of both parties and the loss of respect and manners in the political dialogue. We are not interested in the insertion of religion into politics and want our constitution to be the only basis of our government.
Finally, we detest OUR legislators selling out to either unions or corporations and the ignoring of the moderate majority. Unless all politicians move away from their current extremes, there will be new political parties arise to serve our needs.
This letter has not been edited.
God letter Ray. I agree that there need to be more than just the two major parties, but a third political party will not stand a chance until we get all of the lobbyist/corporate money out of politics. The reason the two parties have such a stranglehold on our politics is that the legalized bribery that passes for political donation, comes from corporate donors whose interests they expect to be advanced by our politicians. As a result, the vast majority of Republicans and Democrats work for the well-being of these donors and no longer work for the interests of the "moderate majority", as you said. Until this river of bribery is dried up, no other political party can come close to competing on equal footing.
Posted by Beavis on August 18, 2007 03:13 PMWe can eliminate the democrat party through proper education. Then jail libertarians and republicans who break the law.Just a start.
Posted by Keith on August 18, 2007 03:22 PMKeith,
The liberals will never let you educate your child with your tax money at the institution of your choice. That would be unfair to the teachers and their unions! And heaven forbid may make our education system better - what a concept. If they ever allow that or the people force it, then you would see the demise of the jack ass party - the supposed "party of the people". As for the repuglicans - they are just as corrupt with their cowtowing towards corporations so there is no hope there either. A third party would be spectacular but eventually would get watered down or bribed into submission as well.
Perhaps to will be easier to achieve if we start at the local level. Mayors and city council members can be chosen on the basis of ability and integrity. You can change the politics of the party by slow hard work. It was done in both parties to make them what they are. NOW it's our turn. I might be totally opposite to you and your opinions but it doesn't matter. Both of us, in fact all who are at odds with the present political offerings, can make changes if we are ready to do the work. Used to be all we had to do was attend the caucus and then work our way up to the next level until we were present at the state caucus.
We actually managed to upset the elite candidates that had been pre-chosen once or twice. It means you choose a party that reflects our goals and desires more closely than the other party. Then you work at changing it until you succeed in getting the candidates you prefer selected or even elected. Makes things a lot of fun because you had a part in it. Just keep high standards and hopes and you will eventually be in the majority. Not fast but it will work.

Posted by Get Real on August 18, 2007 07:02 PMKeith - what's this "democrat party" that you refer to? How does it differ from the "Democratic Party" that is legally registered in Colorado and nationally?
Posted by Liam on August 18, 2007 07:02 PMLiam, we all know the weak, anti-American rot that is the Democratic party, of which he speaks.
Or is it the sellout neo-con Republicans? It's hard to to tell at times.

Posted by Dravur on August 19, 2007 11:28 AMLiam,
i have learned that leftists are serioulsy offended when described as Democrat as opposed to Democratic. I don't know, or particulary care, why.
I agee that the latter is probably the better usage but routinely utilize the former based on what I have learned.
Think of it as pay back for leftists having hijacked the term Liberal.
Posted by James Jones on August 19, 2007 12:40 PMNot so James Jones, the democrates did not hijack the liberal term. It was bestowed on them by rigid repulicans who could not think of a word to go with democrate.
Posted by Allen Campbell on August 19, 2007 12:56 PMMr. Campbell
So. LIberal is the term the leftists prefer.
We can think of all sorts of words to go with Democrat.
You can choose to say Westminister when you know the proper name is Westminster.
You can choose to say Democrat Party when the propper name is Democratic Party.
Either way you sound like an ignorant a$$hole.
Fitting.
Posted by James Jones is a glow in the dark bitch on August 19, 2007 03:34 PMIt is amazing how a thread of a letter to the editor has broken-down into name calling. Taxes, goverment and who pays how much sould be debated. I like my smooth roads, food inspected, toys and goods safe, drugs studied, streets patroled, a viable fire fighting force,ect.... So how much at what cost? Should every road and highway be tolled? Co-op fire/police departments? Lots of people talk about how high taxes are untill an e-coli breakout and then it's "where is the FDA?" You can't have it both ways. Yes, politicians and bureaucracies can be corrupt or expensive.
Posted by k2ken on August 19, 2007 04:06 PMThe problem with governmental agencies and controls is that the cost far outweighs any benefits. Perhaps we can ask why it costs so much more for tools and other supplies. Why it takes so long for the DMV to provide a driver's license renewal. A private company producing security ID badges gets the job done in minutes with a smaller staff and a very low cost. they contain the same ID strip and other information and a picture. From start to finish it takes about fifteen minutes. Twenty on a busy day.
Experience trumps promises. Personal choice and responsibility trump good intentions. Individuals trump government. That is factual. Unfortunately politicians from both parties seem to disagree. Time to educate or replace them.
Posted by momma y on August 19, 2007 04:25 PMMr. Campblee,
See what I mean? No man with a sense of humor would ask me to give up Democrat Party and the fun of evoking that kind or reaction simply in the name of enhancing grammar.
Everybody knows who we mean.
Speaking of which:
It is fewer, not less, taxes.
Posted by James Jones on August 19, 2007 04:31 PMSo it's the "Democrat Party" then? OK. And the other one is what ... the "Repyoublican Party" - rhymes with "pubic" in honor of Mark Foley; the gay but gay-bashing GOP mayor of Spokane; John McCain's closeted gay staffer; serial adulterers Gingrich, Guiliani, Limbaugh; Ted Haggard; etc. You get the point.

The reason your insults require asterisks is that you have a double-digit IQ.

Yea, I'm sure the people of California would totally agree with that statement. Energy deregulation? Worked like a charm, totally brought costs way down. Free market my @ss.

I find you hilarious. You've used your little "double digit IQ" remark before, while out the other side of your mouth (or perhaps another orifice all-together) you lament the horrible name-calling that goes on and call for the censorship of it..
Could you possibly be a bigger hypocrite? Probably not, you've set the bar so high...

Apparently, momma y has never had an occasion to try to get support from a computer company. Apparently, she hasn't had the experience of trying to get a company to honor its warranties. Apparently, she likes the way Halliburton and others are putting our money into their pockets instead of into the projects they are being paid for.
We see many asinine statements on the forum, such as "Individuals trump government". My impression is that most of the criminals are individuals. People too often mindlessly parrot some saying they have thought of or heard, not because it makes sense, but because it sounds good to them.
But she is right with this one:
"The problem with governmental agencies and controls is that the cost far outweighs any benefits."
Enron and the innumerable other corporations which have engaged in corporate corruption have benefited the officers and major shareholders tremendously.
Posted by Truth on August 20, 2007 09:32 AMChalrs B,
I know you are always on the look-out for hypocrisy in others but, once again, you have not found it.
I lament the posts with "horrible" nane calling becasuse they fail to rise above dull, unimaginative profanity which is your specialty.
I also object to posts that contain nothing beyond an ad hominem attack which is your standard fare.
Quite often the two are joined and when that is the case I would like to see the RMN hit the delete button. That "censorship" would enourage a discipline that would elevate the standard and enhance the discourse on this page.
I have never objected to clever, or witty insults woven into the fabric of an argument but that ability seems to be beyond your reach.
Your posts are mired in mimicry and platitudes which is why I accuse you of having a double digit IQ. You might be able to pull yourself out of it if you gave it a try.
Posted by James Jones on August 20, 2007 09:47 AMJJ,
Is this where you bend over backwards and defend your right to do what you call for others not to?
Let's replay your post and find the "fabric of an argument" that you "wove" your insult into:
"OK - and I will refer you as the vulgar slug the RMN suffers to slime around on this page. The reason your insults require asterisks is that you have a double-digit IQ."
Short memory Jimmy Jay? H-Y-P-O-C-R-I-T-E.

Posted by Charles B on August 20, 2007 10:31 AMPeople in the Democratic party can be proud to call themselves members of the Democrat party and those other folks are Republics, proud members of the Republican party.
Just change both names and all the fun goes out of their insulting us.
Those of us who lean so far to the left we need a brace are liberal, progressive and usually secular but that name is just too much trouble to refer to.
Posted by Sharon B. on August 20, 2007 11:23 AMHey! Now you all can have fun!
Last night, on Channel 9's newscast, we got a glimpse of our "national security" as the likes of Jonesy would have it work.
Just "denounce" those who, you SUSPECT, MIGHT BE doing something that could be seen as "against national security". The Office of poison pen, poison rumor, and poison whisper - also known as "Homeland Security" - now has a website available.
Their spokespeople were on the air, to inform everyone that, "Things have changed".
You don't have to worry about libel, slander, or such nonsense as Constitutional Rights! They are now there to receive your denunciations, and SUSPICIONS; which you now can freely express by filling out their forms on the Internet.
Constitutional Rights, such as free speech, or freedom from warrant less intrusions, no longer exist.
You, too, can become an adjunct to the domestic spy department! Just go on the web; and fill in the blanks!
Don't believe me? Get to Channel 9, and ask them to put that segment of the 10:00 PM News of Sunday, August 19th, on their own website.

How about instead of Democrat Party we go with Democrat-yick Party?
Posted by James Jones on August 20, 2007 12:58 PMWell, let's see now.
We have "Rethuglicans".
We have "Repugnants".
We have "Republirats".
We have "Repissicans.
And Jonesy was complaining that some of us lacked imagination.
Oh! What a whiz of a whiz he is!
Or would that be - using Charles B.'s comparative - O what a pathetic limp dribble?
Can't rhyme it; but it does, in its own way, kind of fit.
Now, kiddies, can we all try to get back on topic, and play nice?

You can report suspicious activity to a number of local, state, and federal officials , anonymously or not , any time you want.
Now,Homeland Security adds the online option and you start foaming at the mouth?
Ask any law enforcement personal and they will tell you tips from ordinary citizens are responsible for a high percentage of arrests.
Whether you choose to believe it or not , we are at war and it is only a matter of time before we get hit again domestically.
I welcome encouragement for the citizenry to be watchful.
Law abiding people have nothing to fear.
Do you agree with the pro street gang "STOP SNITCHING" apparel also ?
You know , the trendy veiled threat found on T shirts advising not helping police solve gang murders ETC...
You're wearing one right now aren't you ?

The Grouch does not dare report anything. He has already told us that the feds are monitoring his communications and peeking in his windows.
This is one dangerous hombre.
Posted by James Jones on August 20, 2007 06:29 PMGet Real & Jonesy,
GR: You certainly picked a screen name that has no relationship whatsoever to your actual postings, or to what you really know about life either, for that matter, sonny.
But, then again, you and Jimmy Boy both appear to prefer to live in your imaginations. In the REAL WORLD there is a great difference between reporting something from FACT - or from eyewitness status, and experience - and just mouthing off - as you would have one do - from SUSPICION.
The pitiable part of your postings is, simply, that both of you are appear to be too unintelligent to be able to even aprehend, much less understand, the difference.
Jonesy wouldn't recognize a fact, if one upped and bit him. He merely imagines that his silly fantasies have some actual worth, or sense, when he sounds off; since he wants everyone to accept his self-conceived position of being a pundit on everything. Which is what makes him such great comic relief when he posts.
From time to time, GR, you have posted items that show a glimmer of intelligence, and an elementary grasp of reality. If you applied this to learning about the Constitutional Rights that are presently threatened by the War-Is-Wonderful-and-Shooting-People-Is-Fun Party; you could enjoy a great deal more respect for what you do have to say.
As to communications monitoring: There are times when even a stopped clock shows the time. In your case, Jimmy Boy, even your imagination manages to get a "base hit" once in a while. Which, if you had the sense to understand, would perhaps give you some indication of just why I find you such a great comic relief, even though, in reality you know so little, or nothing, about most of the topics upon which you propound so pedantically.
Oh! MY! Now I'm a "dangerous hombre". Why, Jimmy Boy, how complimentary of you. I do see through your smoke and mirrors, Jimmy; and I do respond as you deserve response. Illusions, fabrications, and other forms of "magic acts" are not all that difficult to see through. And, as I say: Oh! What a whiz of a whiz you is!
Just a hint. From time to time, over the past period during which I've posted, I've indicated that I speak from experience in some areas. Your response has been words to the effect that my experiences are "incorrect". Well, of course, in your fantastic imagination world, other people must always be what you see them to be. In reality, however, life is a great deal different.
Those who don't want to learn, won't. And those who refuse to learn, learn nothing as well.
Have a nice evening, gents. I've another place to go. Thanks to you both for your evaluations.
Posted by Old Grouch on August 20, 2007 08:30 PMGet Real,
He's just playing the dumb, slightly incoherent blow-hard to try to throw the Feds off. It might work.
Has he told you the one about how the Vatican has imperial designs on global domination? Seems Benedict is plotting to first over-turn the US constitition and once we're neutralized ... The World will drop into the Pope's hands like an over-ripe plum.
While the rest of the world is concerned with fascist Islam, the Grouch stands faithful watch on the wall ready to sound the alarm at the advance of the Catholic hoards.
I'll bet that's where he's headed now. He probably has the night shift.
Maybe the Feds really are keeping an eye him - couldn't hurt.

You are off on a tear, aren't you? More comic relief; but also a great deal more evidence of the progressive nature of your underlying dementia.
Gee, Jimmy boy, I didn't know you were so afraid of me. Do I remind you of, perhaps, one of your keepers? The one who doesn't encourage you to just regress further and further into your imagination and fantasies?
Are you finaly trying to come to grips with reality? Or is it just a need for some adjustment in medications?
We all know and sympathize, Jimmy boy. After all, living in the LaLa Land of Oz, and being the Whiz of a Whiz you is, is really so much more preferable to trying to deal with that nasty old real world out there. Isn't it?
Do keep on keeping on. It's so much fun to watch.
Posted by Old Grouch on August 21, 2007 01:13 PMRepugnats,
No, for conservatives it's all about freedom and prosperity. We use the money to keep score.
For you leftists on the other hand, the source of all problems is the same - lack of other people's money. Ask Rick.

As to "humorless comedy", Jonesy boy, no one should know better than you about that. You fill reams of postings with it day after day. Unconsciously, of course; since you seldom, if ever, come out of your imagination to view your works.
But, that's what makes them all the more hilarious. You take your imagination - and your basic ignorance of so much of reality - altogether seriously. And that's by far the best comic relief on the website.
