Low reading scores
Why would anyone be perplexed with low reading scores? Reality check, anyone?

Amen, Mr. Archer! Thanks to CSAP, and No Child Left Behind all schools have to bend over backwards catering to children of individuals who have no business living in the US.
There are only so many dollars to go around so the high-achievers languish while money is poured into the bottomless pit called English Language Learning.
( Cannot call it ESL anymore thanks to the gang with those initials)
It wouldn't be so bad spending the money on them if they excelled, but these students take and take and give nothing in return. What should they give? How about consistent and good attendance? Extracurricular participation, parent involvement?
I realize the excuses will start - oh they have to work. Well, how about just doing their homework?
The reasons why Colorado students and especially non-english speaking students do not progress would be revealed if in addition to the testing, students were also evaluated on their attendance, homework completion and involvement in their school. At my children's high school, they only participate in stuff if they don't have to pay. And even then their attendance is sparse.
Both Mr. Archer and marie make good points.
The limited resources that are available to the Schools are being used, in many cases, to assist children who, along with their parents shouldn’t be in the United States. Providing bilingual services, classroom translators and other support for illegal alien students robs American students and legal residents of educational resources. The ridiculous accommodations that are afforded to illegal aliens in the schools amounts to a theft from those that are citizens and legally in the country: it’s time to demand that it stop.
As far as CSAP goes, the only thing that it appears to have accomplished is to turn the process of educating our children into factory work. I’m sure that every parent thinks that his/her child can be a brain surgeon or some such thing, but statistically, most people and students will fall into the category of “average”. It’s unreasonable to think that every student is capable of being a “high flyer”.
Finally, it’s equally ridiculous that Colorado high schools are churning out graduates that can’t read, write or speak English. It should be remembered that the voters decided that the official language of Colorado is English. The least that people could do is learn it.
The schools keep demanding more and more of our tax dollars. Who do you think gets most of it?Children of illegals and illegall children themselves.
Mean while citizens students are forced to learn a dumbed down education because the school administrators are more concerned about minority students passing and getting educated instead of our children.
Every class both of my children have been in has been interupted and had serious behavior problems almost on a daily basis by mexican children.Never anyone else.
My kids classes are constantly interupted and in chaos because of the mentality and culture of the very students our system is pouring millions of our tax payer dollars to educate.Wasting money on dumbing down and trying to push an education on people who have no respect for our country or education we can provide them is a waste of time and money. The illegal parents send their children to school for the purpose of having a baby sitter not an education.

Posted by A on August 4, 2007 08:42 AMRight away we have, what I call "nut jobs", obsessed with one issue, immigration show up on these boards. "Everything is 'their' fault. Had those individuals themselves learned to read, they would by this time come to understand what they are reading and writing. The truth is that most people in this country have a knowledge of the English language only sufficient to bleat their feelings. In an infant that is acceptable, that is their nature. It is NOT for anyone who would claim to be a mature adult.

Posted by Hank on August 5, 2007 10:09 AMSomeone mentioned "the limited resources available to schools". Certainly different from the "don't throw more money at them" crowd.
Yes, the United States simply cannot afford to spend the money it takes to educate the people living here. We're just a poor little country trying to get by. Anyhow, we are much too busy having fun, buying big cars and mansions, and killing people to have time for education. Maybe one day we'll be the richest country in the world, and then things will be, oops, we are the richest country in the world. Imagine that. But we're working hard to change that. Anyhow, if India can have a permanent lower caste, why can't we? And we need people to mow our lawns so we can go to the gym and get a good workout.
