War and malnutrition
Wednesday, August 1 at 10:32 AM

Gary Landrum of Littleton writes:

After reading the article on the 2007 Food Stamp Challenge (“I couldn’t afford an onion,” June 11), along with Roxane White’s and Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper’s experiences, I think we all should consider the following:
302 million: Current estimated population of the United States.
27 million: Approximate number of Americans who have to rely on food stamps every day.
9 percent: Nearly 1 out of 10 Americans are on food stamps.
$177 million: Amount spent on the Iraq war each day.
Incalculable: the cost of malnutrition in the United States as a result.

"27 million: Approximate number of Americans who have to rely on food stamps every day."

Uh, well no, actually. Most of them don't have to rely on food stamps. They could try relying upon work to get money to get food.

It's just a concept I thought of right off the top of my head.

If that's a sample of what comes off the top of your head, I hesitate to wonder what lies beneath.

02:34, close the top of your head, I think it is throwing up your ideas. Id rather help these 27 million, than spending 400 BILLION in Iraq

Why on earth are you spending 400 billion dollars in Iraq???

hey if I quit my job and do nothing but hold my hand out will it be ok with all of you to pay for my food, home, health care, kids education and give me a pay raise every year? if so sign me up other wise have these 27 million get out and go to work. I guess this is still part of that great program the government started,'the war on poverty'. it is working as I am going broke paying for all of the social programs

I believe that statistics show that the majority of food stamp recipients are working adults with children.

A full time worker earning $10 an hour may net only $1400 a month (after taxes). Rent, utilities, car insurance, medical expenses and non-food items can quickly devour that paycheck.

For many hard working families, food stamps really do represent the difference between buying food or going hungry.

if you only earn 10 bucks an hour you should really consider not having kids you can not afford to feed and take care of.

One of the tragic ironies of 'conservative' ideology is that Americans are providing better social services such as food stamps, et al to Iraqis than our own citizens.
"Socialism" on American taxpayers' dime is okay, except for our own.

6:42 - What about parents who may have been earning a good income when they conceived their children, then are laid off and need to settle for any job available?

Are you proposing orphanages for children whose parents no longer earn a living wage? Are you suggesting abortions for anyone who conceives while earning less than a living wage?

What about the surviving spouses whose partner died? Should we take their children away from them because their partner had the bad luck to die without adequate life insurance?

How about if you're a single mom with two kids and you have a great job ,making big bucks and they outsource your job and 20 of you get laid off..then that same month you get diagnosed with BREAST CANCER. You go thru emotional Stress and a few break downs because your father has died he was the glue of the family..and you go thru chemo and radiation..after all that you go look for another great job with benefits...to pay for
your house and you find out that all the great jobs are not there..only 6-9.00.You find out real quick after searching and searching that
wages have been driven down....by illegals working with fake ssn..etc. and you end up losing your house. Then, when they take your house the movers conviently separate all your expensive belongings to the side, and come back and steal them. You and your children come home to find your whole house on the lawn. Pretty devastating for you and your children. What then..what to do..where to go. A home and food stamps would be nice.To make lemonade because life gave you a lemon.

Michael R... good points,
People can be pretty cruel..even to a fellow American. Taxes aren't only deducted for food stamps for the poor..but for all the government expenses..air fairs, banquets and the like, now its all the illegals whos draining the system. The American working poor is also trying to survive.

Conservatives = only the middle finger for a hand up
