A cheap shot
Saturday, September 1 at 12:01 AM

When I opened my Rocky Mountain News on the morning of Aug. 28 and was blasted with the enormous picture of the poor, young student receiving care after being knifed in the throat, I was appalled.
It was sensational, in bad taste and what if that young man had died? If young children saw this picture, how would the parents explain? And it could cause children to be afraid to go to school. It was literally a cheap shot to sell papers.
Also, did this young man give his permission to have his privacy invaded in such a blatant way?

News content is all about sensationalism anymore.Do you honestly expect to open a paper or turn on the boobtube and not see this. To sit there and say you are appaled is a little hypocritical dont you think. Is this not why most people buy a rag like the News today? For the liberal bias and shock value.

Did you complain when those extremists protested the funerals of fallen Military , now this was appaling. Or have you spoken out at the coverage of those degenerates in the gay pride fiasco/parade? Thier behavior was/is appaling.

First of all, whoever you are, no one is forcing you to read or view things you find offensive. What you are really saying is that your beliefs and your personal preferences should prevail over all things you disagree with. Do you know what that is called? I'll leave the answer to you. If your honest, it won't be hard to put the right name on it.

One other thought. That picture depicting the results of such a senseless crime, rather than offending you, should have inspired you to do whatever you can to prevent such crimes. I know no one person can accomplish much if dedicated to a cause but, if you don't know how, there are many groups, associations and agencies out there who would be glad to assist.

Constant iteration of a problem is not a solution to it. That requires deeds and, to paraphrase someone who said it better than I ever could, It is your deeds that will be remembered while your words are lost on the wind.

Soory, I did not mean to post the above without including who I am.

Janice Volz Schefcik,
your outrage is absolutely misdirected. Why aren't you outraged at the state hospital in Pueblo for letting such a dangerous person back into society?
Why aren't you upset that CU did not conduct a proper background check on the assailant.
Like it or not, reporting what happens in the public forum is not an invasion of privacy and neither is photographing those events.
And stop with the "what if" statements...he did not die?

Allen Cambell: It is nice to see the name attached; as for the picture Janice Volz Schefcik, I saw it and very soon it drifted out of my memory. I wish I could retain it forever as it would put me on guard. Lucky for me you don't get to mandate what is printed.

Deicide Corner: “Human society is born in the shadow of religious fear, and in that stage the suppression of heresy is a sacred social duty. Then comes the rise of a priesthood, and the independent thinker is met with punishment in this world and the threat of eternal damnation hereafter. Even today it is from the religious side that the greatest danger to freedom of thought comes. Religion is the last thing man will civilise. ” -- Chapman Cohen

I see your point about the parents. However trying to shield your self from evil by having the paper ignoring it does not make it go away. Perhaps your efforts would be better served by protesting the criminal act it self.

Look also at all the people helping him. That was a classic photo, one I will remember for a long time.

Anon at 3:57 clearly doesn't realize that it was the republicans, specifically, GeorgieBoy, who made it nearly impossible to see the funerals of the dead soldiers. Anyway, this letter was not about dead soldiers. It was about a victim of crime. I applaud the paper for showing the picture. Most of the 'offended' I GUARANTEE it, watch violence on tv and call it entertainment. But, when it is reality, they cry 'foul'. Yeesh. Talk about a confused value system.

I can`t stand any more photos of grieving families at soldiers funerals.

And I could live happily if I never see another photo of Bush.

RMN dropped my name it seems. 11:09 was me.

So, the fractionalization of American society continues in its slow but inevitable progress toward absurdity. The danger in this should be obvious. It is certain that when a person joins any one of the factions so created, they become easily manipulated by the one in charge of that faction, who's motive is power and control that will erase you personal rights and assures their own personal financial gain.

This fractionalization of society is the very thing that has historically given rise to dictatorial, tyranical and oppressive governmental power. What most cannot see is that this is exactly what power seekers strive to create. Divide and conquer then, unify under absolute control. When people allow the many factions to clog up the political process to the point where it becomes ineffective, the conquer part is all ready accomplished because unity no longer exists

An un-unified, divided people are an open, and easy target for those looking to wrest power from legitimate elected goverments and impose tyranny. This is how true evil achieves power; Factions of society get so wrapped up in their self important, trivial personal interests and constantly argueing over them, that they never see it for what it is until it has taken over absolute power.

It is imperative that people realize their personal preferences and agendas and the insisting they be enacted into laws, pales in importance, are a selfish anathama to liberty and of absolutly no importance when the very political system that allows that right is under assault by those who's agenda is the destruction of the last vestige of freedom of choice, which is the single most important foundational bedrock right of every other constitutional right we have.
