Advice for the right
Those stranded on the far-right shores of the altercation about immigration (it is not a debate) have been dishing it out against us Latin American immigrants with reckless glee. Of late, however, they bemoan being addressed with adjectives they refer to as conversation stoppers.
I feel their pain and want to offer a bit of advice.
Please listen to the words if this Latin proverb: “If a person calls you a burro, talk to that person, if five persons call you a burro, get a saddle.”
Delio D. Tamayo, Aurora
it is not about Latin Americans as a whole, it is about ILLEGAL ALIENS. If you can not get that through your thick skull then perhaps it is you that needs some advice. Look up the words Illegal and Alien in a dictionary and see if either word specifically mentions Latin Americans. Also if 1 person says arreest and deport all illegals then you will have to hide, but if everyone says that, then you had better follow all immigration laws and do it right.
Posted by Nick on September 20, 2007 12:37 AMI dont think one person in the country has a problem with " immigrants" they arent the problem. It is all the law breaking ILLEGAL immigrants that people cannot stand anymore. oh yeah not all illegals are Latinos either you dimwit!
KNOWING the difference between the two makes all the difference in the world .
Posted by Fresh on September 20, 2007 03:52 AMIsn't it interesting how those who would have wide open borders to the south neglect to mention a few pertinent details:
1) Mexico is (and has been for more than a decade) the source of the most LEGAL immigrants - in fact, up until 2006 statistics, it sent more than the rest of Central & South America combined.
2) Mexican hypocrisy about open borders is amazing, considering their policies to stop illegal immigration into Mexico from their south (even when those illegal immigrants are "only" passing thru to the US) and Mexican policies against non-citizens who are there as legal residents speaking out on any issues (grounds for immediate deportation). If the US adopted the same policies against illegal immigration that Mexico uses, Mexico would lose a major chunk of its 2nd highest 'cash crop' (2nd only to oil, and the oil fields are running dry) - the money sent home by both legal & illegal immigrants to support family members left behind.
3) The EU is also experiencing high illegal immigration numbers (no - not Mexicans - mostly from the African continent and former Soviet Union countries); however, it is going after illegal EMPLOYERS - with both meaningful fines & jail time for employers (both businesses and individuals) who hire illegals. Perhaps the US should implement those policies.
4) If the US gives amnesty to the illegals already here, isn't that a slap in the face to the folks who have been waiting to come here legally? Depending on the website's statistics, anywhere from 4-8 million folks are waiting to come here legally - some for 20 years or more. I will believe that we have a shortage of labor when those rolls are cleared (along with their immediate family members). The main reason that businesses don't recommend that alternative is that they would be forced to pay fair wages for those jobs they claim "Americans won't do" - when the reality is that they are jobs that Americans won't do at poverty level wages.
here is a proverb for you delio.
if you came here illigally you are not welcome.
if you came here and refuse to learn our language you are not welcome.
if you came here and have your hand out for free benefits you are not welcome.
if you came here and are here illigally then put the saddle on your back and pack your family back home.
if you come here the legal way through the front door you will be welcomed.
Blacks are getting a "triple" economic and social whammy from illegals (Mexicans, Hindu-Indians, and Europeans). US Sen. Shamnesty Salazar and Richardson (another Benedict Arnold) loves criminal illegal Mexicans. Bill Gates, BILLARY, and (D-Punjab) Ritter, all love criminal illegal Hindus. US Sen. Allard (communist-sider) only helps lying white disabled Vietnam veterans. Bottom line, Front Range blacks need to muster up their own US senator.

Posted by Heather on September 20, 2007 07:29 AMAdvice to the left:
Leave our language, English, alone and stop trying to erradicate the word ILLEGAL from it. Screw with you your own language, not ours.
America-haters like you can't find saddles that are big enough. And by the way, we don't call them burros in the USA, we use another name.
Posted by Hank on September 20, 2007 07:55 AMI also have a wonderful question for the left. Now that france is talking of making sure all immigrants speak french could it happen here that they will all need to speak English?
look at the millions of dollars we could save printing GOVERNMENT FORM in spanish.
naw that wont happen as the dums need more blind and stupid voters to help them out.

Some advice, you might want to look into the difference between "immigrants" and "illegal aliens" because that is the real issue.

The worst enemy of Mexcians is Mexicans.

I know stories about illegal immigrants who have fought bravely and died nobly saving their Marine buddies in Iraq. I believe anyone who signs up to join our Armed Forces and is slated for Iraq, should be eligible for immediate citizenship. If they refuse to become American citizens, then they should be kicked out of our Armed Forces and sent back to their country of origin. If they accept citizenship, we should welcome them with open arms.
I know people insist on ENGLISH ONLY as one of the solutions for assimilation in our culture. However, it is more than that. Learning how to speak, write, and read English is critical to a person's success in the job market. People who live in the US and lack those skills are trapped in poverty. Americans should vigorously help people who cannot speak, write, or read English.
Actually, a number of people born in our country still cannot read. I don't know how many, but when I taught English more than 30 years ago, I kept working with some who thought they didn't need skills because they were going to become professional athletes. I tried to convince them that sports weren't forever and few really good high school athletes actually make it to the pros. In addition, many athletes sustain injuries that cut their careers short.
Someday they would need language skills that most other people in the workplace have. Even though I spent a lot of time trying to tutor these kids, I had a hard time getting through to them because they were looking at professional athletics as a way to escape all school requirements, not just reading. They figured their agent could do their math for them, an attitude that I am positive agentss like. American history didn't matter. They didn't care about our culture. They were all about ego. Even worse, their parents seemed to encourage that attitude as if their children were supposed to be the family's cash cow.
What they wanted was to be an athletic hero and get all the stuff that comes with that.
It was really a shame. These people were capable of learning the skills they needed. However, dollar signs associated with professional athletics were too attractive for these kids to see reason. Since that was a long time ago, I am sure they miss those capabilities now.
We need our culture to assimilate. Legal immigration is the only way that will happen. Illegal immigrants "hide" in our country, perhaps living good, admirable lives, perhaps not. But they must always hide because their first act in coming to America was to break the law.
We need to handle this problem with heart but also firmly. People who are here illegally need to get legal. If that means going home and getting a visa, they should do it. If that means joining our Armed Forces, great idea.
However, they need to become legal.
We should stop luring them here with benefits, the same as good kids are lured into professional athletics without requiring the other skills they need for success.
I am proud of America. So should all citizens be. Why else are people from all around the world trying to come here? Let's just do it right.

Posted by wrtr83 on September 20, 2007 09:50 AMYet another American was murdered by an illegal alien in Phoenix. He was a public servant, a police officer. This is an American issue that negatively effect ALL Americans of ALL ethnic backgrounds. Mary is right we should be prosicuting employers of illegal aliens. Boycott any business that employs illegal aliens. Our government MUST deport en masse, all illegal aliens. I hate the idea of a wall, but anything would be something And certainly better than what is being done now.
Posted by Tom on September 20, 2007 10:29 AMTom - Sad story indeed. There's even more to it than just the illegal status of this murderer. He had a lengthy criminal history, had been deported once, returned and continued to commit crimes.
He was arrested again appx 2 mo ago for assault on his girlfriend and was released on a $300 bond. No investigation was done regarding his illegal status so the police never found out he had once been deported.
This needs to be a an area with zero tolerence as we are seeing literally thousands of illegals getting arrested and released without anyone addressing their illegal status.
Any illegal who breaks the law, any law, should do max allowable time and then be escorted deep into their country of origin.
This has got to stop.
Posted by KW on September 20, 2007 10:49 AMThe reason the political issue of "illegal immigration" has legs for the GOP is that it involves people with brown skin.
Non-whites, both legal and illegal, are an increasing percentage of the U.S. population, and we are in a transition where the now-dwindling majority of whites are witnessing a change in "their America" and perceived way of life. This has the potential to increase their anxiety over the future, just as global warming, middle east instablilty might.
And the GOP, if they want to stand a chance in November 2008, they need to leverage at least one slice of this anxiety, and "illegal immigration" is a great vehicle for that, for better or worse.
Labeling the political issue as -illegal- immigration is sufficient cover for those who prefer not to admit (to themselves or the public) that their underlying concern is the racial sea-change that is underway in America: salsa now outsells ketchup; the old stand-by blond-blue-eyed billboard model is now generically dark-eyed & dark-haired; and white-flight suburbs are as diverse as the cities that once spawned them.
Closing the borders won't stop this trend, but such discussion uses the unspoken, largely unconcious wish that it -could- be reversed as kindling for getting people fired-up. And sufficiently fired-up people are more maleable than those who consider a range of interests and weigh relative candidate positions.
GOP walks a fine line -- they need to overcome the widespread disgust with their management of the Iraq war but not fire up anti-immigrant passions so much that they trigger white-on-brown violence (btw, it was not coincidence that McVeigh bombed Okla Fed bldg after months of dehumanizing messages from Ginrich/talk radio that equated all federal employees with 'jack-booted thugs'). And should GOP win on this strategy in 2008, it may be pyrrhic if they permanently alienate the growing bloc of Latino voters for coming generations.
The government has been trying to go after the employers! The ACLU keeps throwing up roadblocks and filing lawsuits.
When the government can't enforce it's laws because of rogue judges and the ACLU what are we supposed to do ?
WE have to get rid of the ACLU. It is not protecting our rights it is protecting illegal criminal aliens.
Let me make this legal illegal criminal alien issue clear.
IF YOU CROSS OUR BORDERS AND ENTER THIS COUNTRY WITHOUT THE PROPER PAPERS OR OVERSTAY YOUR VISA"S ETC....
YOU ARE A CRIMINAL ILLEGAL ALIEN!!!!!!
NO if's and or but's about it!
You are a criminal as soon as you enter or stay in this country illegally!!
That is when they become criminal illegal aliens people!
At this point you should be found and deported. I don't care how long you have been here,or how many babies you have managed to pop out.
So let's make this clear . Every illegall in this country is a criminal. Whether they broke one law by coming here or many by staying here.
They should be deported!I don't care how long it takes to hunt them and their children down and deport them. Do it and get it done.I don't care if it's 6 million or 20 million, deport them all. Seal the border. Then we can process the people who have been on the waiting lists for a long time and figure out a way to allow people who can contribute something to this country beside popping out 10 kids who start popping out 10 more starting at age 15.
They are not to be given any entitlements what so ever. If they have a child and can't pay for the hospital charges, they are deported as soon as the baby is born.
I know this sounds harsh and some of you will strongly disagree with me.
We have got a major problem in this country and instead of nitpicking what criminal alien should be deported and having a contest on who's the worse criminal illegal alien you can find bullcrap going on,just start deporting them all.
When Police agencies do DUI roadblocks they should check a persons driver's license and insurance. No driver's license or insurance go directly to jail,if you are a citizen you are heavily fined,if your not you get a one way ticket back to where you came from.
Employers that are hiring illegal criminal aliens should be fined and pay for every illegal to be shipped back to their country.
I am sick of these politicians trying to pull the wool over our eyes. You are either for America or against it. If you pander to the latino you are pandering to the criminal illegal aliens. They should be brought up on treason charges.
This has got to stop.I've had enough ,how about you?
Posted by Can I get an AMEN! on September 20, 2007 01:00 PM11:52, The GOP and Dems should also consider the growing bloc of American citizens who want illegal immigration stopped, our border secure and illegal aliens deported.
Your right though, if people don't wake up, it will ultimately come down to ethnicity. See you in the streets here in the USA, and then see you in the streets of Mexico and Latin America. Unfortunate situations that could be prevented if laws were obeyed.
REMEMBER THE ALAMO!
11:52
In case you didn't notice it was BUSH who was the most vocal about the amnesty bill. Nice try to make it both partisan and racist. It is a matter of our survival as a country and a society.
WE don't make any distinction between white and non-white illegals. All of them need to be deported. We need to get the supreme court to revisit the anchor baby issue and see if this bunch will cave in to the nonsense interpretation we have now or decide it on the basis of intent.
There would be no problem if the illegals in our midst were really interested in working and being part of our society. They aren't. Mass demonstrations demanding that their lawbreaking attitudes be rewarded began the mass anger. It has been growing as our infrastructure is being undermined by the demands on our schools, our health care system and our welfare system. The brazen denial of any responsibility to obey our laws combined with the deliberate fraud in identity theft, ER hi-jacking and welfare cheating increased the anger until the illegals themselves ignited it with whines that the amnesty bill was too restrictive.
American citizens are making demands on our politicians now and many of them are beginning to see that the benefits they hope to gain from illegals will never be theirs because they will no longer hold office.
This issue crosses party lines, race lines and economic barriers. It has united us and that is what the illegal "pimpsters" fear more than anything else. The laws already on the books can be enforced by any law enforcement agency if the citizens give them the mandate. Oklahoma has shown the way. Let those who can use the ballot initiative do so and get those laws in place here. Any money spent to imprison, punish and deport illegals will be well spent as the result will be a mass self-deportation and reduction of the burdens on taxpayer services like welfare, education and health care. Adding the stiff fines and other penalties, like prison and loss of business licenses (make that tax licenses as well), will make it too expensive in real time to hire illegals. McDonald's may have to raise prices but they will save in the long run because there will be fewer mistakes to correct because the people on the window will speak and understand English. (Wendys will have problems. I can count on one hand the number of correct orders from them.)
We have to take the matter into our own hands and make certain legal changes are made so that the laws are enforced. There is no need for anything else. Enforce the "pablum laws" the politicians put in place to make us believe they were going to do something about illegals immigration. We can do it. The illegals are terrified that we will do just that. Look at their, and their friend's postings here.
Amen

Posted by Ben on September 20, 2007 02:06 PMNice try to make it both partisan and racist.
Race and partisanship are as American as apple-pie and hot-dogs, a tradition that goes back a couple hundred years. I'm not the first and won't be the last to suggest this same dynamic is at work with the 'illegal' immigration debate.
Historically, politicians secure the votes of lower/middle-income white citizens by channeling these citizens' generalized economic anxiety into anger over an easily identifiable racial segment (skin-color has varied: black, red, yellow, brown). This diverts their scrutiny away from the underlying policies pursued by the same politicians, which typically are at the root of their anxiety (and typically favor upper-class/business interests).
I hear the passion expressed by these other commenters, but I don't share it.
The GOP hears that passion too, and may or may not genuinely share it (given the big-business interest in maintaining low labor costs), but will likely do its best leverage/manipulate that anger to secure votes that it otherwise would not attract if their full range of policies were more rationally considered. Given the GOP's otherwise weak election-year hand (unpopular Iraq war, confused 'Christian' values-voters), we can expect the campaign ads to have lots of brown faces on them this time next year. And we can expect those to have a predictable, and politically effective influence on a certain type of voter out there.
Posted by on September 20, 2007 02:42 PMThis has nothing to do with race, ethnicity, or prejudice. It is about the USA being a nation of laws, and it's LEGAL citizens insisting the laws be enforced. What part of ILLEGAL do you not understand???
Posted by on September 20, 2007 11:06 PMTamayo offers a Latin proverb: “If a person calls you a burro, talk to that person, if five persons call you a burro, get a saddle.”
This is done in an effort to convince those of us that oppose illegal immigration that if a bunch of people call us names that they (the names) must fit simply because a large number of individuals says it’s so.
Rubbish.
Tamayo should be reminded that at one time many people thought that the Earth was the center of the universe. Of course, this has since been disproved . The moral? Just because a bunch of people says it’s so, doesn’t make it so.
By the way, I am hardly a member of the hard/extreme right. However, on this matter, many of the “righties” are correct and the situation must be dealt with.
