Barack Obama

Margaret Fox of Sedalia writes:

Does anyone care that Obama was raised as a Muslim, went to Muslim schools, was thorougly brainwashed into their culture and beliefs as a child? I believe the “age of reason” (according to the bible) is 6 years old, and he certainly was a Muslim until much later that that. He changed his religion so he could become a politician! This is more than just a foot in the door if he should be elected. This is an onslaught that will obliterate our constititution and will certainly bring about an end to all our freedoms, especially freedom of religion and free speech; equal rights for women and death by stoning of women who dare to date or even look at any other person of faith? Does any paper or journalist, reporter, broadcast station have the intestinal fortitude to say this?
Goodbye America as we know it if he should be elected.

you are an idiot Peggy. Do a little research before you send a letter making a complete fool of yourself.

Margaret

Sounds like you have been "thoroughly brainwashed" by wingnut evangelical culture. The bible is wrong - for you the age of reason is not 6 - for you there is no age of reason.

You need serious counseling.

The author is obviously brainwashed by the Focus on the Family cults. They keep wanting to establish a theocracy in America; forcing politicians to pass laws according to their perception of Christianity.

The people in, as Old Grouch postulates, the Je$u$ Bu$ine$$ almost makes me embarrassed to admit being a Christian.

Posted by on September 5, 2007 02:55 PM

Peggy you have been listening to waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannitty.
Try reading the bible instead of just using it as a weapon.

Wow. This is really one of the stupidest RMN LTTE's of all times.

It shows you how far this paper has sunk that they have to print crap like this. Have you no standards, good sirs? Oh, of course not. If it smears dems in any way possible, they'll print it.

There are so many falsehoods in this article....oh, forget it.

Posted by Tbone on September 5, 2007 03:21 PM

All religions are brainwashing, There were thousands of (supposed) immaculate conceptions back int the biblical days. Of course if it is your religion you aren't brainwashed right? And for the most part religion is regional, if Margaret was born in the middle East she would be a Muslim and hate the infidals.

Do you care that story and information has been thoroughly debunked?

As for an onslaught that's obliterating the Constitution...I think the current Christian in office is doing a very good job on that front already...

If a child can be completely trained in their religion by age 6, knows all the beliefs and all their culture, I want to meet that kid.

This is why the religious right must never be allowed to take over the country. They would love to start lynching any one dirfferent from themselves and buy into the rights, keep the populace afraid strategy. God help us all from the likes of Margaret and Neo Cons.

Posted by A x-republican on September 5, 2007 03:44 PM

Stop bashing her, guys! She's right! This is exactly like that time that Catholic John F. Kennedy became president and all Americans, regardless of religion, had to bow down to the Pope and swear loyalty to the Vatican! We sure don't want that happening again.

Posted by Arioch on September 5, 2007 03:49 PM

I posted some links of news articles that debunk Margaret's assertions...along with an idea where she could put them, but the man at RMN interviened...

so, do a google search

barack obama madrassa and you will find those same artcles debunking that rumor...malicious and vile as it is...

Wow,

I was hoping to be the first one to call Ms. Fox an ignorant partisan, but I see that I am WAY behind (stupid WORK).

Good job everyone. For ACCURATE information on Sen. Obama, read his books. 'Dreams from My Father...' and 'The Audacity of Hope.' Both GREAT books, regardless of your political affiliation. If you are conservative, it gives you insight into a true progressive Democrat, and if you are liberal, it provides a great narrative of the politics of a Democrat that is not so far to the left (a TRUE PROGRESSIVE in every essence of the word).

And, just for clarification, he went to school, starting at age 10, in Hawaii at the Punahou School, a NON-SECTARIAN private school.

I think the bigger travesty in this letter, is that it was actually published by the RMN. WHY!?!?!!!

Posted by Dan2 on September 5, 2007 04:35 PM

Mike D. And people say our kids grow up too fast now days. If a little kid of 6 was "beyond the age of reason" in Biblical times, wonder how they were punished when they misbehaved?

This may be the new Holloween costume to wear around conservatives: Obama as a little Muslim

Posted by Sharon B. on September 5, 2007 04:41 PM

Keith,

Don't be such a blind and ignorant partisan on this one (or ever but specifically this topic). Sen. Obama is no more a Muslim than you are. And that IS the truth. What Ms. Fox wrote was slanderous and contained not one piece of factual information. Not one.

Posted by Dan2 on September 5, 2007 05:52 PM

Peggy/Margaret, you poor, poor thing. Didn't your parents teach you not to believe everything you read--especially when it is sent from your wing-nut friends and/or relatives?

For those who are interested, here's a link to the chain e-mail that Peggy/Margaret got her talking points from...

http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/muslim.asp

Overall, I have to give her effort a C-. Not original and missing key misinformation. She left out the parts about Osama taking his oath of office on a "Kuran" (the KURAN!), the "fact" that his father was a RADICAL black muslim from Africa (AFRICA!), and the that his step-father was a RADICAL muslim from Indonesia.

Oh, and by the way Peggy/Margaret--Al Gore didn't sit on the Senate Committee that heard Oliver North's Iran Contra testimony about Abu Nidal (not OBL).

Dear Friend,

Thank you for contacting us about the false and slanderous rumor that Senator Obama attended a radical Muslim school as a child. Below is the Senator's reply, which we encourage you to share with others who have heard this story.

Obama for America

-------

Thank you for inquiring about the false rumor circulating in cyberspace and fanned by the right wing media that I was educated in a madrassa when I was a child living with my mother in Indonesia.

This false rumor first appeared in Insight, a right wing magazine. CNN investigated Insight's claims and on January 22 aired a segment entitled, "CNN Debunks False Report About Obama," which declared that, "Reporting by CNN in Jakarta, Indonesia and Washington, D.C., shows the allegations that Obama attended a madrassa to be false."

I hope that this independent investigative reporting by a credible news source will lay this false story to rest. But there is also a larger issue exposed here; namely, the nature of contemporary politics.

Commenting on this false report, Washington Post staff writer Howard Kurtz observed that, "This, unfortunately, is how the media food chain works. A bogus charge appears in some magazine or on some website and works its way up to bigger news outlets, all based on little or no evidence." And observers note that it is hardly coincidence that this story broke as I announced my first formal step towards running for President.

For example, in a January 22 letter, a number of prominent religious leaders and heads of major denominations, including the head of the National Council of Churches, the National Baptist Convention, and Reform and Orthodox Jewish rabbis, wrote, "These outrageous charges began as reports of [Obama's] potential candidacy for President emerged. . .and have now been picked up as fact by Fox News and some partisan commentators. We are writing to deplore this despicable tactic and set the record straight. We have had enough of the slash and burn politics calculated to divide us as children of God. . . ."

That letter continues: "The bitter, destructive politics that have so riven our country in recent years cannot stand.... Certain moral standards should infuse our national dialogue, and the recent attacks on Sen. Obama violate values at the heart of this dialogue. The false and malicious attacks levied at him are anathema to all of our faith traditions, and we condemn them outright."

I did not make the decision to run for the Presidency of the United States lightly. My motivation is grounded in the belief that the decisions that have been made in Washington these past six years, and the problems that have been ignored, have put our country in a precarious place. Our economy is changing rapidly, and that means profound changes for working people. Americans are concerned about skyrocketing health care bills, the pensions they've lost and their struggles to pay for college. Our continued dependence on oil has put our security and our very planet at risk. And we're still mired in a tragic and costly war that should have never been waged.

But it's not the magnitude of our problems that concerns me the most – it's the smallness of our politics. America's faced big problems before, but today our leaders in Washington seem incapable of working together in a practical, common sense way. Politics has become so bitter and partisan, so gummed up by money and influence, that we can't tackle the big problems that demand solutions. That's why I am convinced that in order to come together around our common interests and concerns as Americans, we have to first change our politics in this country. That, I believe, is what the Insight report about my religion and my education is all about.

Again, thank you for writing. If you have any further questions about this matter, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Sincerely,

Barack Obama

Of course she was mistakenly suggesting a white against black racial crime but all I could think of was the black Muslim sniper, John Lee Malvo.

Does this country really need race baiters in the White House?

And how is a green senator , who has no distinguishing accomplishments, aside from being partially black , anointed with "ROCK STAR" status?

Because the media and George Clooney tells us?

That seems to be sufficient credentials for todays "progressives".

Why would anyone worry about a politician's religion? If they profess to believe then some will use that as a benefit and others as proof of idiocy.

I suggest you look at the candidate, do your own research on both the background and stated positions. Good idea would be to see if campaign promises are worth anything after the election. No matter which party presents the winner there will be no great takeover, no great defeat nor any great victory for either side. Politics and politicians are like mating turtles. You know it's happening but you don't want to stand there and watch the whole thing.

Get your head out of the direct mailers and use them to line the bird cage or, in the case of a selected few, the litter box.

Thank heaven for the posters who had the facts on this nonsense. Any sensible person reading here is in your debt. The others aren't even comic relief tonight.

Food for thought......

U.S. presidential candidate Barack Hussein Obama was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, to Barack Hussein Obama , Sr., a black Muslim from Nyangoma-Kogel, Kenya and Ann Dunham a white atheist from Wichita, Kansas. Obamas, parents met at the University of Hawaii.

When Obama was two years old, his parents divorced. His father returned to Kenya. His mother then married Lolo Soetoro a radical Muslim from Indonesia

When Obama was 6 years old, the family relocated to Indonesia. Obama attended a Muslim school in Jarkarta. He also spent two years in a Catholic school.

Obama takes great care to conceal the fact that he is a Muslim. He is quick to point out that, "He was once a Muslim, but that he also attended Catholic school"( Two years)

Obama's political handlers are attempting to make it appear that Obama's introduction to Islam came via his natural father, and that this influence was temporary at best.

In reality, the senior Obama returned to Kenya soon after the divorce, and never again had any direct influence over his son's education.

Lolo Soetoro, the second husband of Obama's mother, Ann Duham. introduced his stepson to Islam. Osama was enrolled in a Wahabi school in Jakarta. Wahabism is the radical teaching that is followed by the Muslim terrorists who are now waging Jihad against the western world.

Since it is politically expedient to be Christian when seeking major public office in the United States, Barack Hussein Obama has joined the United Church of Christ in an attempt to dowplay his Muslim background.

Notable Quotes from Barack Obama:

"I cannot swallow the whole view of Abraham Lincoln as the Great Emancipator"

In an address March 14th 2007
Obama says "No one has suffered as much as the Palestinians"

Obama needs to call for religious freedom in Islamic countries and demand that Muslims offer reciprocity in the realm of tolerance for other faiths. He must show his absolute loyalty to the U.S. and her citizens before I would take his run for the office of president seriously.

Lincoln was undoubtedly one of our greatest president. But he was not a saint. His views about slavery would be unacceptable today.

From Lincoln:

"My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or to destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that. What I do about slavery, and the colored race, I do because I believe it helps to save the Union; and what I forbear, I forbear because I do not believe it would help to save the Union."

A apparently thinks that Obama should not have recognized the simple and plain truth and fact that the Palestinians have suffered enormously.

I take it that a person of A's ilk thinks Obama should have lied and said that all is well with the Palestinian people.

I don't know of any Israeli leader who denies that the Palestinians have suffered. Only A.

From Obama:

"We can and we should help Israelis and Palestinians both fulfill their national goals: two states living side by side in peace and security. Both the Israeli and Palestinian people have suffered from the failure to achieve this goal."

More from Obama:

"The U.S. and our partners have put before Hamas three very simple conditions to end this isolation: recognize Israel’s right to exist; renounce the use of violence; and abide by past agreements between Israel and the Palestinian Authority.
We should all be concerned about the agreement negotiated among Palestinians in Mecca last month. The reports of this agreement suggest that Hamas, Fatah, and independent ministers would sit in a government
together, under a Hamas Prime Minister, without any recognition of Israel, without a renunciation of violence, and with only an ambiguous promise to “respect” previous agreements. This should concern us all because it suggests that Mahmoud Abbas, who is a Palestinian leader I believe is committed to peace, felt forced to
compromise with Hamas. However, if we are serious about the Quartet’s conditions, we must tell the Palestinians this is not good enough."

Charles B - Your 7:04 post is spot on. Some people tend to focus on just the policies a candidate stands for without looking at the candidate themselves.

I like to have an idea where their heart is as well as what their policies are.

Posted by KW on September 6, 2007 03:30 PM

Charles,

I prefer to look at the things a candidate does rather than says. Much better way to measure the person. Those who claim a religious belief can be judged by their actions in reference to that faith. Merely claiming to be a member of a religion tells me only that they wish to be identified as such.
I am a Catholic. Ted Kennedy claims to be a Catholic. I would never judge the Catholic Church by Mr. Kennedy nor would I expect others to do so. (Judging by the bad priests is another subject but it would be a valid beginning)

Politics is a battle for votes. WE hope we pick the best candidate but last time we chose the lesser of two evils and got a definite lesser. I still would not vote for Kerry but maybe there would be a better alternative if we had known Bush would try to sell us down the illegal river.

Religion is a system of public beliefs comprised of those who share the beliefs.
Unfortunately some think that just because they go to a building that qualifies them as a member of that belief. That is as true as saying that sleeping in a garage makes you a Rolls Royce.

Since there are people who do not believe in God it might be a good idea to leave religion on the side of the picture and focus on the individual.

Posted by momma y on September 6, 2007 04:48 PM

momma y,

I see your point, but I just think it shouldn't be disregarded

If they claim to be religious and aren't, it speaks to their hypocrisy.

If the claim they're religious and are, then in my view, that's worse...

If they don't claim to be religious, they get my vote!

Obama has not done nor said much of anything of substance in his political career. He says what people want to hear and that is it. He is popular because the Democrats think he being black, good looks(as he does not have sharp tongue of Sharpton or the creepy looks and slimeiness of Jackson). What makes Obama dangerous is that he will suck up to anyone and have no principles at all. Power is his end game.

What are Obama's policies he'll run on? What's his campaign platform?

I know it's still a long way to 11/08 but considering how early he entered the race, he has had ample time to relate this critical information.

Maybe he's still figuring out what those policies will be.
