Fossett’s phony flight
Friday, September 14 at 12:01 AM

News stories of Steve Fossett’s missing plane repeat the myth of his “round-the- world” flight in a balloon in 2002.
Steve Fossett did not fly around the world in a balloon! At best, he flew around Antarctica in a balloon. By his own calculations, Fossett’s balloon trip covered 19,000 miles. The circumference of the Earth is 25,000 miles. He took a shortcut.
If a “round-the-world” trip can cover less than 25,000 miles, I am announcing my plans to set a record by walking around the world ... in less than a minute.
I will go to the North Pole, walk south 10 yards, and walk around the pole. By Fossett standards, that’s “around the world.”

This is not the time to start disparaging an aviation pioneer while his body is still missing. "Class" and "Decorum" might be a couple of words you might want to look up.

Tom - sounds like you have issues. Good luck with working those out.

An aviation egotist bites the dust. Who cares?

Tom,

The man lived more life in one hour than you will in your entire time on this planet. Have some respect you petty brat.

Tom, Why don't you just keep kicking the guy especially while he's down... shame!

I think he faked his disapearance.

Steve Fossett was nothing more than a egocentric billionare like the rest of his kind that needs praise and worship trying to prove that he was no mere mortal like the rest of us.

What a waste of time and money he spent trying to be immortalized in history and ended up being a victim of his own delusions of grandure.

What Goes up, must come down sooner or later. Poor rich fool.

It always comes down to 'class envy' - some folks just can't stand that some one else has done well. The true communist wants misery spread equally to all.

Tom please do go to the North Pole. While you at it, stay there! Take 40 acres with you.

Crusty

In your case it comes down to common sense envy and phoney hero worship and what does the commies have to do this topic? My heros are our troops in Iraq.

From what I've heard, you'll need some serious scuba gear to walk around the North Pole, and the Russian Navy might have something to say about you being there.

Steve Fossett could trek the North Pole with our any kind of protective equipment. According to what Steve Fossett's friends said when he first went missing Why he's Mighty Mighty Man that can survive anything. Even crashing into the earth at several hundred miles an hour!

And on the brighter side, six old plane crash sites have been found.

Now you can go back to barking at each other.

Steve Fossett may have been a pioneering aviation explorer in certain categories, but Tom is right: He circumnavigated the Anarctic continent. He may have done so for practical political reasons (a lot of countries in any true "around the world" balloon trek are paranoid and trigger-happy), but he did not go around the world, he went around Antarctica.

Thanks, PeterPi. You're the only one who understood what I was saying. A lot of the early posters just like to attack folks who point out the truth.
