Iraq war
Tuesday, September 11 at 1:56 PM

Robert Porath of Boulder writes:

The Random House Dictionary defines “quagmire” as “a situation from which extrication is very difficult.” The definition of “folly” includes the phrases “lack of understanding or sense", “absurdity", and “a costly and foolish undertaking; unwise investment or expenditure". From these we can construct a simple sentence: The extent of the folly of our attempted occupation of Iraq is reflected in the depth of the quagmire we now find ourselves in. It is the dilemma of a man who suddenly realizes that he is riding on a tiger’s back. He can’t stay there forever and he cannot get off.
One wishes the Neocons had read Robert Ardrey’s The Territorial Imperative, a behavioral science treatise written in the shadow of Viet Nam, or that the President had been a native (rather than transplanted) Texan with enough practical sense to know that stirring up a fire ant colony has painful consequences or that maintaining a beehive requires a degree of real expertise. As it stands, what was apparently seen as a honey trove has turned instead into a monstrous tar baby. The question which should be asked of all presidential candidates is, “If elected, what would be the first steps you would take to resolving our dilemma in Iraq?”

Weak minds often quote either the bible or the dictionary to prove a point. I bet little Bobby's high school English teacher is proud.

Just click your heels 3 times and repeat "there's no place like home". And you'll go back to a time when the world was a big happy place, and we call got along and danced around the Maypole.

Ahhhh, the loony left from the Republic of Boulder intercedes to enlighten the poor flatlanders of no intellect. Don't worry, Booby Boy, you'll soon find a lot of redundant and intellectually flat support from some of the regular bleeding hearts who are just as devoid of reality as you are. In fact, they'll have a wet dream or two over your letter.

"Weak minds often quote either the bible or the dictionary to prove a point."

Yeah, and a bunch of those bible-quoters have their own TV channels and millions of idiot sheep at their disposal.

Meanwhile, no one above has refuted anything in the original letter, though they have amply demonstrated their own lack of intellect.

Reading these blogs is always interesting. To those of you who denigrate the person writing the letter-why don't you write a rebuttal letter to the editor substantiating your disagreement? Wouldn't this be a lot more courageous than writing a comment on the blog that uses name calling? How about writing your remedies to the war in Iraq? So far, nothing that has been tried is working to end the war. Let us have your solutions!

We could go on for days, weeks months and years with entry after entry, refuting the writers "facts". Lord knows that's been hashed over and over and over again. Just because he made them up in his head doesn't make them facts. It's more fun to get right to the substance of 99.9% of these blog entries. This guy lives in fantasy land...

jj, you did it, you are the only real poster here so far.

All the others are imaginary.

It is interesting how intellect, education and questioning anything about the war is labeled as liberal. Why does the right label most professors as liberals and colleges as liberal? Oh, because if you think for yourself and educate yourself you are a danger to those sheep and sheep herders.

Robert,
Your letter is a breath of fresh air, keep up the good work .And these cowards who "post and run" will eventually find something shiny to distract them. for they know not what they do...or why.
They just follow . As Karl Cheney pointed out, sheep are sheep, and the "Fox " Rupert Murdoch likes 'em to remain sheep,as they've made him one rich Aussie.

All you liberal Democrats must be so proud of moveon. org for what they wrote in the New York Times about a real American that loves his country.

I love Stephen Colberts' line every time he interviews a liberal: First, why do you hate America?

Hey Keith, JFK was taking steps to get out of VietNam, and dismantle the out of control CIA, AND taking on the globalists bankers. Look at what that got him.

Thanks keith! Knowing you disagree with me only re-enforces what I believe in assures me that I must be right! I think you must have gone to the same school GWB did, you both were sadly left behind from reality.

Again (one of the few times) Keith finally talks about something he knows intimately.

How long do the occupation supporters want us to remain in Iraq? Are they waiting for an arab sheik to come abord the USS Missouri and sign a peace treaty? The bush said that the mission was accomplished, so what are we still doing there? The occupation supporters have succeeded in prolonging this blunder until the USA goes bankrupt.

P.S. Why aren't the occupation supporters enlisting for militart duty? It is a volunteer military, so those who believe in the mission should volunteer. the rest of us--taxpayers-- are forced to pay for it.

How about "The War on Poverty?"

We have been bogged down in that $5 trillion quagmire for 40-years and there is still no exit strategy...and we still have the same old problems.

How's that for a quagmire?

Posted by Hank on September 12, 2007 10:42 AM

Well, at least we're winning the war on the environment!

Posted by Coco on September 12, 2007 11:47 AM

How can Petraeus talk about an exit strategy and pulling 30,000 troops out by next summer? I thought all of that had to be 'hush-hush' thats why George W couldn't have any timeline benchmarks? Or are benchmarks and timelines fin as long as they are george's. So by Sept 08 we will have the same troop level as Sept 06...that's progess??????

Posted by Lord help us on September 12, 2007 12:49 PM

Hank brings up a good point. I think the problem with the War on Poverty is that there simply hasn't been enough killing.

To the best of my knowledge, the death toll in that particular war has been very close to zero, and almost all casualties have been unintentional -- accidental shootings of poor people by the police, for instance.

Now, if we really put our efforts towards racking up an impressive body count, we'd be getting somewhere.

Posted by Arioch on September 12, 2007 03:44 PM

War on poverty, war on drugs, war on terror....
Hasn't anyone learned you always lose a war on a noun?
Although, all that money spent in Iraq and Afghanistan would sure help us here at home.
The opium dealers are the only winners in Afghanistan, and the war profiteers are the only winners in Iraq.
