Mexican consul general’s missed opportunity
How nice that the interview the Rocky conducted with Denver’s new Mexican consul general, Eduardo Arnal, was in Spanish (“5 questions for new Mexican Consul General Eduardo Arnal,” Sept. 13).
But therein lies the problem because English is our language! He mentions improving communications several times, yet he chose to ignore this opportunity to set the example by speaking in English. However, he was quick to point out that he’d make sure the illegals were aware of “their rights.”
If he really wants to help, he needs to make sure that these people learn to speak English, start the road to citizenship, stop the marches and insist that stores and businesses no longer need to kowtow by printing everything in Spanish.
This is America, not Mexico’s annex.

Indeed, the new Mexican Counsel General missed an opportunity.
He missed the opportunity to explain why the Mexican government is tacitly encouraging many of its people to enter the US illegally.
He missed the opportunity to explain why Americans shouldn’t be upset that many illegals drive and are involved in auto accidents every year without insurance or a valid driver’s license.
He missed the opportunity to explain why Americans should foot the bill for the health care, education etc. for illegal aliens from his country.
He missed the opportunity to explain why Mexico seems so opposed to the US enacting more strict controls over its borders while Mexico zealously guards its borders (particularly its southern border).
He missed the opportunity to explain how/when Mexico will develop an economic policy that creates jobs for it’s people- removing the economic incentive to violate the borders, laws and sovereignty of the United States.
This list could continue, but it is certainly clear that the new Counsel General did miss an opportunity.
how many of his entourage were illegal and how many of them stayed here?

Posted by on September 26, 2007 08:38 AMWhen I was helping research scholarships for my high school's counseling department, I kept coming across NAHJ scholarships: National Association of Hispanic Journalists (motto: Increasing the Influence of Latinos in U.S. Newsrooms). Of course, the applicant must be Hispanic to win a scholarship.
I think both local papers are working with interns or graduates who received these scholarships and adhere to the association's philosophies. To a newspaper's point of view, it is USEFUL to be able to send a Spanish-speaking reporter to interview the increasing population of Spanish speakers, whether the story be on crime, culture, immigration, etc.
We can expect to see more "reporting" that is fully sympathetic to illegal aliens because of the typical preference among newspapers in who covers the story. I have to hand it to NAJH - it's really a very clever strategy.
