Pavarotti’s legacy far greater than minister’s
Thursday, September 27 at 12:01 AM

Regarding George Lilly’s Sept. 15 letter concerning the unequal coverage of the deaths of Luciano Pavarotti and the Rev. D. James Kennedy: Pavarotti was immensely(!) famous. His God-given talent enriched countless lives throughout the world, regardless of nationality, race, religion, etc. That is a far greater legacy than that of Kennedy — a dance instructor cum “Christian” hatemonger known mainly in America’s Bible belt.
Kennedy — who would have looked at home at any used car lot or casino lounge — will quickly be forgotten. (Except by the members of his multimedia compound, and his family enjoying the luxuries of his ministry’s excess.) No doubt his image will continue to adorn the compound’s 50-foot video screens. Suckers and cash flow are paramount!
Legitimate Christian leaders such as Pope Benedict and Billy Graham deserve media coverage. But Kennedy was irrelevant except to a relative few right-wingers.
Lilly asks, “Which of the two will have had the most lasting impact when all is said and done?” Any sensible person knows the answer is Pavarotti.
Years from now, if religious fundamentalism hasn’t destroyed the world, civilization will still know Pavarotti. A few quacks might know who Kennedy was, but decent people won’t care.

Well said Matthew. If I could only throw my morals overboard, I too could become a millionaire in the Jesus business.

The questionof who has the better, biggest legacy depends on your taste of opera music. It also depends on how much faith you have. This is all subject to personal opinion.

Lilly is an idiot

"A few quacks might know who Kennedy was, but decent people won't care." I agree. (you are talking about Ted, right?) Now as pertaining to James and Luciano, is Ok to mourn the loss of both? I thought I'd ask, since its so important to those who wish to regulate thoughts. feelings, and faith of others.

Freebird,

Mourn away, as you please. The original question had nothing to do with personal response to the death(s) themselves. It asked which of the two would leave - or have left - the more lasting impression on the world.

Since that is a question that really doesn't have a response in terms of immediate time frame, there were - and are - differing opinions as to each individual.

No one is attempting to "regulate" anything. Don't let imagination run away with itself.

FW - If you think the letter writer and Liam are Wackos then you've obviously never read or heard any of Rev. Kennedy's hateful rants. If you can handle the intellectual strain, do a Google search on Dr. James Kennedy dominionist and you'll find a plethora of his hateful, anti-gay, anti- "Anyone who isn't Christian" rants. But why should we expect that from you. You're probably one of his followers.
As usual from your kind...comments short on anything resembling substance and having nothing to do with the topic of the letter posted. Anyone with any sense of either of these two figures knows that Pavarotti will have a far more lasting and meaningful influence. His influence reached across the world, across many cultures, and certainly across many religions. Can any of you folks say that about Rev. Kennedy?

Sorry, folks. 12:11 posting was mine. I went in and cleaned out "cookies" in Internet Explorer; and it seems that erases all the stored personal info that would otherwise be automatically included here.

Oh! Well! One of these days, i might even learn how to operate one of these machines.

"His God-given talent enriched countless lives throughout the world, regardless of nationality, race, religion, etc."
What God gave him that talent?

Both were men who greatly influenced millions of people in different ways. Some may not like Kennedy or Pavoroti, but both will be greatly missed. Why do people have to bash on religion. He had his beliefs, you have yours. Free country remember.

"Both were men who greatly influenced millions of people in different ways. "

Yes, Pavarotti brought great joy to millions through his immense talent. Kennedy influenced millions with his talent for parting sheep with their hard-earned cash.

Dr. Kennedy was an honorable and loyal servant of God. Pavarotti may be remembered for a few arias, but will one day be forgotten. Dr. Kennedy will be remembered for introducing Christ to millions of listeners. He will not be forgotten.

Kennedy was a maggot like Brian Stuckey, both of them worthless piles of smegma. He is already forgotten, and Stuckey was never known and his passing will not be mourned.

I have a hunch Stuckey was one of the sheep separated from its cash.

If there is an afterlife (I believe there is something more, but belief is not fact), I can see Kennedy now saying "wow! was I an idiot".

If the afterlife is what Kennedy spoke of, I would rather be in his vision of Hell.
