Psychiatry’s dangers
Kenton Astin had six years of psychiatric treatment, yet he still was insane enough to cut the throat of a University of Colorado student (“Two close calls at CU/Student's throat slashed; no shots fired at suspect,” Aug. 28). And the psychiatrists said he was no risk.
Psychiatry cannot cure but can only attempt to suppress a malady. The drugs used to suppress the malady can and do exacerbate the original problem, including making a person homicidal when he may have only been despondent.
Yes, Astin should be removed from society, but be placed in a jail where he can hopefully recover and not be again experimented on by the modern day Dr. Frankensteins.

If it wasn't for psychiatrist and psycologist creating a new mental disorder every day, who would the pharmacies companies sell all of their mind altering experimental drugs too?

Posted by on September 21, 2007 06:51 AMWhat brings the Scifictionology, Tin Can E-Meter children crawling out of the woodwork? Autumnal Equinox celebration, or such like? Tom Cruise making another D-Grade flick? Clearing some "engrams" before the first test of the Semester in English Composition? Proving that they read the Frankenstein material, before turning in their book reports?
Or just a slow day for the Editor, with too much space to fill?
What a crock!
Posted by Old Grouch on September 21, 2007 07:21 AMWhen I was a teenager, I was diagnosed with severe depression. To make a long story short, all of the worst times in my life since then have been when I couldn't -- or wouldn't -- get help.
These days, I'm doing pretty well, actually. I work a good job, I'm in love with a wonderful woman, and so on. My supportive family and friends have helped, of course, but I give a lot of credit to drugs and therapy.
As for the cult of scientology, well, you can find out more about that here: http://www.xenu.net
Posted by Morden on September 21, 2007 08:20 AMMorden, thanks for posting. Too often we let these letters go unanswered.
People with mental health problems will be the last group to come out of the closet.
There is still so much ignorance, as shown by the first post here.

Posted by on September 21, 2007 01:43 PMRegarding old Grouch’s post, I’ve been wondering the same thing.
It seems that lately there have been a few anti-psychiatry/psychology letters in the Rocky.
Perhaps it’s some kind of phase. After all, every once in awhile the creationists put in an appearance, are debated and then wander off (granted they always seem to wander back eventually and the cycle repeats).
It is too bad that people who know nothing about psychiatry put themselves forward as experts on the subject. Without psychiatry, I would probably be dead. If not dead, I would be unable to hold a job or lead any semblance of a normal life. I would not have had the joy of raising my family and holding a meaningful job. Psychiatry and its medications gave me back my life.
Wonderful posts people. We can only hope the naysayers get help if they ever need it and don`t use our grandparents methods of alcohol and suicide.
