Vaughn Johnson’s death
I read the article about Vaughn Johnson’s tragic death with great dismay.
Certainly there was more to this young man’s life than the fact that he happened to play football in high school. Perhaps the News is guilty of perpetuating the stereotype that the only meaningful contribution young African American males can make somehow involves excelling in sports or entertainment. Shame on you.

You had to bring race into this???

I, too, read the articles and came to conclusion that the reason they mentioned his football career... nay, the only reason there was ANY article about him whatsoever, is in direct relation to the fact that his father was a successful football player. It had nothing to do with race. I will also say that the reason there was not much more to say about him is the fact that he was so young. Very few people have accomplished a whole lot by the time they hit twenty. It is one of the reasons we think it so tragic when someone dies at a young age. They haven't had a chance to do much.
But, seriously, the article and nothing to do with race.

Posted by Sheila on September 23, 2007 10:23 AMTo be honest with you, I believe Vaughn did accomplish several great things in his short life. Not only did he play football, but also ran track. He was one of the fastest guys I have ever seen. Vaughn would have been on the starting line for Mesa State Football as a sophomore playing wide receiver. His first semester in college he earned a 3.0 gpa as well. As Vaughn's girlfriend I truly know that he made a great impact on several lives at his age. The people who knew him know how sincere and determined Vaughn was. I learned a great amount of things from him that I hope some day to educate people who use their cell phones while driving.
