Collegian editorial not proper, reasonable
It’s been awhile since I was editor of a daily newspaper, but I can’t agree that “editorial” is even a reasonable euphemism to describe the four words used in the recent issue of the Rocky Mountain Collegian at Colorado State University (“CSU paper draws heat for editorial,” Sept. 22, et al.).
There is nothing right, reasonable or “proper” about these words. The Taser use on the University of Florida student has no connection, not even tenuous, with the president, however critical the publication might desire to be. “Toilet mouthings,” if used at all, should be only in the company of close intimates. Crude profanity reflects emotional anger, at the opposite end of verbal reasoning stimulating discussion or debate.
I am aware a certain amount of deterioration of our culture and manners has occurred in recent years, but the Collegian has far exceeded even the most liberal contemporary usage with its four words, in print, in a college newspaper. It’s time to say “no way”!
Frank Brown, Arvada
Becazuse of this socalled editor the paper has lost revenue. It now will lay off several more employees to keep thier money woes at an even keel. The answer is simple. Seeing how CSU supports the use of foul language in the print of its paper, the readers need to look elsewhere for information. Let them go bankrupt.
Just like Natile mase of the Dixie Chicks, he has the right to say what he wants. We the general public have the right to not support his leftist views and do not have to support him at all. Let the paper go out of buisness. Remember how the Dixie chicks took a HUGE hit in their pocket book. Boycot the paper and any advertisers who want this type of language in print.
Posted by on October 6, 2007 05:39 AMOh come on now, you must have a personal issue with that poor little baby McSwane. That poor little baby McSwane was just expressing his first amendment rights. And his little baby cohorts said they were just testing the boundaries of freedom of speech. It's beside the point that they chose the President of the United States.
It makes about as much sense as stabing someone, but not actually killing them, to see if they would be tried for murder.
Please let these poor little baby's alone!

As recourse the paper is now losing revenue and layoffs are occurring. Mr. McSwayne you had your day and were able to express your First Amendment rights. You now have a duty to the Collegian and your associates to move on so the paper can return to a service that is respected by the community. Here is your chance to do the right thing and show where your heart truly is for the Collegian - resign!

Posted by Hank on October 6, 2007 08:43 AMThe Dixie Chicks are back stronger than before and what's more: The bulk of America and the world agrees with them. If it wasn't for censorship I'd repeat that dreadful word referencing W. Bush. Once in a while the moderator will see the word and reduce it to "F" ~~~ .

Posted by Karl Cheney on October 6, 2007 04:48 PMAs the CSU editorial story was played out, particularly on television, one couldn’t help but wonder if the indignation of the campus GOP would have been as vocal, or existed at all had the editorial directed its four-letter pejorative at a prominent democrat.
David McSwane should immediately employed by the DNC. His backbone will provide crucial backbone to the craven Democratic Leadership.
