CSU’s editorial
Wednesday, October 10 at 2:00 PM

Chris R. Hotz of Greenwood Village writes:

If J. David McSwane had printed an editorial titled F—- Obama, or F—- Hillary Clinton, does anyone really think the students would be arguing about free speech? Not a chance. We would be seeing protests wrought with liberal clichés accusing the paper of “hate speech", calling them “hate mongers” and “angry conservatives", as well as demands for firings from the very people who are now hiding behind free speech to support their political viewpoint. Like the Jay Bennish fiasco, when the target is the President, anything is fair game. When the tables are turned (like when a conservative comes to speak on a college campus), its amazing how quickly free speech goes out the window.

Truth hurts, doesn't it...all foul speech is "protected" unless it hits one of your own; then it's "hate" speech that has to be shut down.

Chris R. Holz and Joseph S just hit the nail on the head.
It's great to see people on this blog that see things for what they truly are and not what there biased minds imagine them to be.

The Democrats and the rest of the left are hypocrites and only pay lip service to the 1st Amendments when they think it serves their upsidedown view of it.

In this case as in many it can be a double edged sword that comes back to cut you especially if the truth is involved.
When will they learn?

Observer is another foul mouth liberal that has no shame or class like the majority of his ilk.

We're sure glad the left has you as one of their voices. another Gross Product of the govement schools.

Too bad 3:05 couldn't afford the "govement schools". What a moron.

Drew and 3:55 are the perfect examples of the mythical intellectual liberal. Drew, FYI you are not as smart as you think you are. I can hardly wait for the searing retort from this mental giant. His logic and ability to turn a phase cuts to the bone. Perhaps a comment about my mother would prove your point.

Cons have been trying to shut off funding for public education since Herr Ray-gun was ushered into office by extremist neo-cons via the Iran-Contra deal.
And they're still trying.
Hang in there Liberals, we DO indeed have God on our side, after all ,his Son was the original "Lib" , as much as those same extremists would like for us all to forget.
"Love your enemies, do unto others, help the poor." Y' know, those pesky Liberal traits.

Also, is that a word that ANY college-age kid hasn't been familiar with since the 4th grade?

Cons only care about $ and other peoples sex lives. ( Jesus had a few words about moneychangers, and throwing the first stone too)

Posted by dmz on October 10, 2007 05:43 PM

dmz, yes Jesus was always for the underdog, and that includes the UNBORN, unfortunately to say that God is on the side of BABYKILLERS is pretty way off base..........

And the whole "moneychangers" thing had to do with the fact that they were selling that stuff INSIDE a house of prayer, it had nothing to do with money itself, because the LOVE of money is the root of all evil, not money itself......

Might want to read your bible and get a few things straight before you go quoting it.......

Heather,

The moneychangers were in the porch area of the temple. All commerce had to be conducted with Roman coins. The Sanhedrin declared that the animals sold for sacrifice in the temple would no longer be pure if paid for with unclean money. The money changers served their purpose by exchanging the money for Hebrew coinage. Historical sources state that Jesus also sat down and braided the whip he used to drive them out before doing so. Understanding is more than knowing the meaning it requires comprehending the context.
As a conservative I am glad they didn't fire the editor. Now he is just another student who had his 15 minutes. He also has to clean up the mess he made by finding more income sources for the paper to replace those his actions ran off. He also has a competitor so he will probably learn something. So will we. If we pay attention.

I think the letter writer has a point. If the headline referred to a Democrat, the Democrats would holler to high heaven. But it referred to a Republican. So it is the Republicans who are hollering to high heaven. What's new?

Can anybody come up with a college newspaper that would drop the F-bomb on a left-of-center public figure?

The inmates continue to run the asylum. In this case a very liberal Cuckoo's nest. CSU looks like a good place to complete your K-12 education in less than 8 years.

dmz,

“Cons have been trying to shut off funding for public education since Herr Ray-gun was ushered into office by extremist neo-cons via the Iran-Contra deal.”

Uhuh.

Please explain the time-line of the Iran-Contra deal and how it is that Reagan was “ushered into office by extremist neo-cons via the Iran-Contra deal” when the Iran-Contra deal took place long after Reagan had become president.

1981 – Ronald Reagan became president of the United States of America.
1987 – Iran-Contra scandal took place.

Here’s a better question: What the heck did any of your post have to do with what the letter is about?

You’ve really got a handle on these things, don’t you.

Hank must think that any school besides BYU or Oral Roberts U is a liberal bastion. Too bad poor Hankiepoo sees things with such black and white blinders. I think that anyone, lib or repub, who can throw bombs but can't take the heat themselves deserves to be exposed as a hypocrit. What's ridiculous is for the Hank's, Keith's, and Hotz's to try to lump all liberals into this kind of category. It's just as ridiculous to generalize every conservative or republican the same way.

So the ACLU supporting the free speech rights of Nazis does what to your argument?

Nice hijack Grimes. You started on topic and deftly redirected. While I agree with your point and find it humorous that Bush picks and chooses when to "abide" by decisions of the Hague, that is another discussion entirely.

I tend to believe the original letter writer's assertion.

But I also question why so many fail to see that the 1st amendment protects one from government interference in a person's free speech, not the consequences (financial, business - ad revenue, potential job loss) of a decision to print. One might argue that CSU, being a "government" school is attempting to stifle this student's free speech, but to me, it seems reasonable that the school have guidelines for a publication that emanates from its' environs.

Choose your free speech battles carefully. To me, this one misses the mark. However, if the tables were turned as the letter writer suggested, I doubt we'd be having this debate. Those screaming free speech would be calling for the editor's head. And I would still feel the same way about the issue.

Funny how fast collectivist lefties forget what the word Nazi originally stood for. Last time I checked, socialism was considered a left wing political philosophy.
