Deporting the American dream
The Oct. 8 column, "Clock ticks as students near age 18," by Tina Griego, should
be required reading for all. There are so many people - including politicians -
who ignorantly group all illegal residents into one category: criminal.
Fellow citizens, I implore you to see these people as the majority of them are -
people trying to make a better life for themselves and their families.
See the children who, through no fault of their own, were brought here by their
parents in hopes for a better life. For many of these kids, the United States is
all they have ever known. How can we, as a people who say we strive for the
American dream, not understand the plight of many of these people who are honest, hard-working adults and
children? How can we deport children? What is our country coming to?
Our leadership is deporting the American dream, isolating us from the rest of
the world by attacking other countries based on lies, and is categorically
denying basic human rights under the Geneva Conventions. Maybe we need to teach
more history in schools to show where we came from. It seems we are denying our
very roots.
Joanne Hendricks, Littleton
How can we, who strive for the American dream, deny those....it is exactly that, the AMERICAN dream. Opportunities that are afforded for Americans, not illegl immigrants. There are plenty of legal immigrants and those waiting in their home countries to come here legally. The illegal immigrant demanding rights that are not theirs hurts people who are trying to follow the rules. If we take a stand that we, as a country, cannot deport children, the wave of people bringing their children will not stop. I resent the illegal immigrants trying to better their families by taking things away from me. My costs for health care have risen because of illegal immigration. The entry level jobs in this country have suffered from a wage decrease because of the illegal immigrants willing to take a lower wage. How can an illegal immigrant be an honest, hardworking adult when they are lying every time they use someone else's SSN to get a job, every time they use a hospital emergency room with false names (knowing that the American tax payer is picking up the tab) and every time they enroll their children in a school system paid for and intended for American citizens? I am a first generation American, my family came here LEGALLY from another country. They worked hard and followed the rules.
Posted by enoughisenough on October 25, 2007 12:34 AMThe defenders of the illegals and, in this case their children brought into the country illegally, tend to overlook some things.
They overlook the fact that the parents of the children have violated the laws and sovereignty of the US; and by bringing their children along have not only endangered them with a hazardous journey but made them illegal residents as well.
They overlook the fact that the parents are the reason that the children are here and thus responsible for their illegal status. It is illogical to blame the government when the true blame must lay with the parent that brought the child here illegally in the first place.
They overlook the fact that if the US were to grant blanket amnesty to children brought into the country illegally such action would be a green light to others to bring their children illegally.
Obviously, this list could continue.
Everyone wants a better life for their children, but it should not come after the violation of American law, nor at the expense of American citizens and legal residents.
What part of ILLEGAL DO YOU NOT UNDERSTAND.
Posted by on October 25, 2007 04:06 AMThe only ones who benefit from illegal immigration are those countries (predominately Mexico, but other countries as well) which refuse to deal with their own internal problems & the illegal employers who hire the illegal workers. I am tired of hearing how it makes for cheap food, landscaping, etc in this country. Do you folks not realize that if the employers had to pay based on legal status, the base wage would go up for virtually ALL - and we could afford the increased costs? I also need convincing that there is a shortage of legal workers in this country when we have both legal workers who are working multiple jobs to make ends meet & 4-8 million folks waiting (these are just the folks who have passed the security clearances) to come here to work legally. When those lists are cleared & there are still jobs unfilled, I will believe - not before.
I do have sympathy for the workers who are trying to make a better life for themselves; however - can't the same be said for both the legal workforce already here & those waiting to come here legally? Don't they deserve a better life too (and since many are citizens & those waiting to come here legally hope to be) aren't they more likely to ultimately benefit this country than folks with at best "split" allegiances?
Posted by Mary on October 25, 2007 05:29 AMjoanne you are a moron for even trying to say that they are not all law breakers as they prove they are by being here ILLIGALLY. are you afraid you will have to pay an American real American wages to get your car washed, lawn mowed, house cleaned?

"...ignorantly group all illegal residents into one category: criminal."
And seeking a better life and jobs excuses committing illegal acts? And what might they be stealing while committing illegal acts? Identities? Welfare? Social Services? Healthcare? Legal services? Education? Are they insured? And we taxpayers who pay for all of that may as well be getting robbed at gun-point in a dark alley. Where are MY rights and protections?
Only criminals commit illegal acts. And money is no excuse, otherwise both Jessee James and Willie Sutton, who only wanted to upgrade their life styles, would deserve spots on Mt. Rushmore.

Illegal Mexicans are abcesses on the posterior of blacks economic and social progress. They steal our jobs and SHAMNESTY SALAZAR and BILL OWENS (Benedict Arnolds), allowed them to register and nullify black votes in N.E. Denver. Shamnesty and Billie pulled this off with their slick Texas-style N.E. Denver redistricting scam. Where is Marshall, T. Posted by 40acresandmymuleandNAMvetbennies on October 25, 2007 07:18 AMJoanne, how selfish. We foot the bill for millions of illegal aliens at the expense of our own children and citizens. Our own Sen. Salazar voted to steal opportunity from American children and give it to illegal aliens (Sen. Allard did the right thing). We give and give and give. They take and take and take. Then the illegals protest because we won't send them to college or want to send them home. Hospitals are going bankrupt taking care of illegals. Schools are over crowded due to costly illegals. 22% of our prison populations are illegal aliens. The COSTS go on and on. WHAT ABOUT OUR CHILDREN? Why do we sacrifice their future for people who don't give a damn about us. We are just an open wallet to them. My wallet is now empty, what about my American dream. To all the illegal aliens reading this post, GET OUT OF MY COUNTRY! If you want to return, respect out laws and do it right. Yes, its too hard to become an American...but its worth it. Show us you are.

I laughed out loud when I read that.
Hey, Joanne, when someone does something illegal, by definition they are a criminal. Maybe that concept has escaped you.
Unfortunately you are not totally alone. There are so many people – including politicians – who ignorantly make excuses for illegal aliens.
Posted by Mountain Cat on October 25, 2007 07:44 AMWe have illegal immigrant parents breaking many laws to stay here, teaching their children it's okay to break the law. All illegals are criminals.
Their children are being taught to be good criminals.
So why should we let the criminals who are teaching their children it's okay to be a criminals and the laws do not apply to you,not be deported?
Explain , Please.
Posted by Can I get an AMEN! on October 25, 2007 07:51 AMJoanne, I think the best thing to do is for you to open up your house to the first 25 illegal aliens who show up at your front door.
Then please provide them with free room and board for as long as they need. And don't forget to give each one of them one of your credit cards, until you have none left. And, give them the pin numbers for your ATM card so they can drain your bank account too.
If you have any children, please offer them up for whatever pleasures they desire. You can also give them the keys to your car so they can get around, after a trip to the liquor store.
Then, if you still feel like it, tell everyone who won't do those things, how selfish & wrong they are.
Joanne what wrong, did your housekeeper get deported? Good help is hard to find.
Posted by on October 25, 2007 08:32 AMWhile I am convinced that many of the posters are afflicted with xenophobia, particularly considering the vile and contemptible nature of a number of the posts, I obviously can't prove that.
A few years ago, the Urban Institute said this about the number of illegal immigrants who might be eligible for Dream Act treatment:
"The new data available from the March 2000, 2001, and 2002 CPSs (consistent
with Census 2000) and again supplemented with Urban Institute research on the
immigration status of respondents places the number of undocumented alien children
who have lived in the United States for 5 years or longer reaching age 18 each year at the
top of the range previously estimated, or about 80,000. Still, about one-sixth to one-fifth
of each cohort fails to complete high school, leaving roughly 65,000 undocumented
immigrants who have lived in the United States five years or longer who graduate from
high school each year— again at the upper end of the range from previous estimates.
Although not all high school graduates go on to college, this group makes up the
on-going potential beneficiaries of the DREAM Act."
I favor the Dream Act. While there is a limit to how much compassion the United States can show, I also think that there is a limit to how little it can show, and that reaching out to this small number of young people who came here quite young and have been here quite a while is something that accords with why America was founded.
Here is a summary of the Dream Act from Wikipedia:
"This bi-partisan bill called The DREAM Act is a one time solution intended to provide a path to a permanent legal status for persons brought to the United States by their parents or guardians as children. This includes individuals with a current legal immigration status, individuals whose parents attempted to immigrate legally but were then denied legality after several years in application, and those initially brought here illegally at a young age.
To qualify, the immigrant student or soldier would have to meet certain requirements such as:
* Proof of having arrived in the United States at age 15 or younger.
* Proof of residence in the United States for a least five (5) consecutive years since their date of arrival.
* Must be between the ages of 12 and 30 at time of bill enactment.
* Having graduated from an American High School, or obtained a GED.
* "Good moral character," essentially defined as the absence of a significant criminal record (or any drug charges whatsoever).
* See below for more details.
During the six years of conditional status, the eligible immigrant would be required to either (1) graduate from a two-year community college, (2) complete at least two years towards a 4-year degree, or (3) serve two years in the U.S. military. After the six year period, an immigrant who meets at least one of these three conditions would be eligible to apply for legal permanent resident (green card) status. During their temporary time, immigrants would not be eligible for federal higher education grants such as Pell grants, though they would be able to apply for student loans and work study.
If the immigrant does not meet the educational or military service requirement within the six year time period, her or his temporary residence would be revoked and he or she would be subject to deportation. During the six years, the immigrant must not commit any crimes other than those considered non-drug related misdemeanors, regardless of whether or not they have already been approved for permanent status at the end of their six years. Being convicted of a major crime, or drug-related infraction would automatically remove the six year temporary residence status and he or she would be subject to deportation.
If the immigrant meets all of the conditions at the end of the 6-year conditional period, he or she would be granted a permanent green card with the same rights as a permanent resident alien, including the right to apply for U.S. citizenship."

Mexican-American resents footing the bill
Monday, October 22 at 12:01 AM
I am a person of Hispanic descent and I have to tell you that it makes me angry that the other persons of Hispanic descent are expecting us as taxpayers to foot the bill for the education of their children in a bilingual school.
That doubles the expense of educating children. Why is it up to us to interpret the English language for these folks? If the parents of the children would educate themselves prior to coming to our country, perhaps it wouldn’t be as expensive for the schools and maybe then more schools could remain open.
It’s wrong for immigrants who come to this country to expect us to foot the bill for their every need! So let’s not blame the school district for the problems; how about we look in the mirror!
We can’t allow this abuse of our good graces and our programs that were designed for the American people to continue.
I am Mexican myself, however my family came here legally and assimilated to the American way of life including speaking the language of the land — English. If immigrants really want to contribute to America, that would be a good place to start!

Posted by c on October 28, 2007 01:00 AMOh,yeah, that's right. If somebody's argument is sound, attack them personally......I just can't resist this one-C excoriates Here First for some typographical and syntax errors, but it's OK with C if millions of illegal foreign squatters don't speak English at all.

I have a secret plan to destroy America. If you believe, as many do, that America is too smug, too white bread, too self-satisfied, too rich, let's destroy America. It is not that hard to do. History shows that nations are more fragile than their citizens think. No nation in history has survived the ravages of time. Arnold Toynbee observed that all great civilizations rise and they all fall, and that "an autopsy of history would show that all great nations commit suicide." Here is my plan:
We must first make America a bilingual-bicultural country. History shows, in my opinion, that no nation can survive the tension, conflict and antagonism of two competing languages and cultures. It is a blessing for an individual to be bilingual; it is a curse for a society to be bilingual. One scholar, Seymour Martin Lipset, put it this way: "The histories of bilingual and bicultural societies that do not assimilate are histories of turmoil, tension and tragedy. Canada, Belgium, Malaysia, Lebanon – all face crises of national existence in which minorities press for autonomy, if not independence. Pakistan and Cyprus have divided. Nigeria suppressed an ethnic rebellion. France faces difficulties with its Basques, Bretons and Corsicans."
I would then invent "multiculturalism" and encourage immigrants to maintain their own culture. I would make it an article of belief that all cultures are equal: that there are no cultural differences that are important. I would declare it an article of faith that the black and Hispanic dropout rate is only due to prejudice and discrimination by the majority. Every other explanation is out-of-bounds.
We can make the United States a "Hispanic Quebec" without much effort. The key is to celebrate diversity rather than unity. As Benjamin Schwarz said in the Atlantic Monthly recently, "The apparent success of our own multiethnic and multicultural experiment might have been achieved, not by tolerance, but by hegemony. Without the dominance that once dictated ethnocentrically, and what it meant to be an American, we are left with only tolerance and pluralism to hold us together." I would encourage all immigrants to keep their own language and culture. I would replace the melting pot metaphor with a salad bowl metaphor. It is important to insure that we have various cultural sub-groups living in America reinforcing their differences, rather than Americans emphasizing their similarities.
Having done all this, I would make our fastest-growing demographic group the least educated – I would add a second underclass, unassimilated, undereducated and antagonistic to our population. I would have this second underclass have a 50 percent dropout rate from school.
I would then get the big foundations and big business to give these efforts lots of money. I would invest in ethnic identity, and I would establish the cult of victimology. I would get all minorities to think their lack of success was all the fault of the majority. I would start a grievance industry blaming all minority failure on the majority population.
I would establish dual citizenship and promote divided loyalties. I would "celebrate diversity." "Diversity" is a wonderfully seductive word. It stresses differences rather than commonalities. Diverse people worldwide are mostly engaged in hating each other – that is, when they are not killing each other. A "diverse," peaceful or stable society is against most historical precedent. People undervalue the unity it takes to keep a nation together, and we can take advantage of this myopia. Look at the ancient Greeks. Dorf's "World History" tells us: "The Greeks believed that they belonged to the same race; they possessed a common language and literature; and they worshiped the same gods. All Greece took part in the Olympic Games in honor of Zeus, and all Greeks venerated the shrine of Apollo at Delphi. A common enemy, Persia, threatened their liberty. Yet, all of these bonds together were not strong enough to overcome two factors ... (local patriotism and geographical conditions that nurtured political divisions ...)" If we can put the emphasis on the "pluribus," instead of the "unum," we can balkanize America as surely as Kosovo.
Then I would place all these subjects off-limits – make it taboo to talk about. I would find a word similar to "heretic" in the 16th century – that stopped discussion and paralyzed thinking. Words like "racist", "xenophobe" halt argument and conversation. Having made America a bilingual-bicultural country, having established multiculturalism, having the large foundations fund the doctrine of "victimology," I would next make it impossible to enforce our immigration laws. I would develop a mantra – "because immigration has been good for America, it must always be good." I would make every individual immigrant sympatric and ignore the cumulative impact.
Lastly, I would censor Victor Davis Hanson's book "Mexifornia" – this book is dangerous; it exposes my plan to destroy America. So please, please – if you feel that America deserves to be destroyed – please, please – don't buy this book! This guy is on to my plan. "The smart way to keep people passive and obedient is to strictly limit the spectrum of acceptable opinion, but allow very lively debate within that spectrum." – Noam Chomsky, American linguist and U.S. media and foreign policy critic.
Joanne of Littelton,
Obviousley, you live in an area where you don't have to compete for educational, health and other public services with the hoards or illegals. You probably benefit from it like most upper class people. Try living in my neighboorhood in Adams County where half of my Son's schools days are spent translating what the teacher said into Spanish. Would those extra hours spent translating benefit our country more if say, they could teach more math and science(humm wonder why test scores are dropping across the board in schools, humm why is that?) You can't go anywhere in town and hear English spoken - Spanish is proudly spoken at the top of their lungs - no attempt is made to TRY to speek English.
So Joanne from Littelton, you have a better house, car, savings account and your children attend better schools than mine, I think we will move into your house with you...after all - I just want a better life for me and my family so it MUST be oaky who cares what kind of stress it puts on you (same thing as illegal immigration, I see something better and I'm gonna take it) Please make steak for dinner my family and I love that!
