Honor appreciated
Wednesday, October 31 at 10:58 AM

I watched with respect and gratitude this morning as President Bush presented the Medal of Honor to Lt. Michael Murphy’s parents (“Ceremony to honor Navy SEAL tugs at the heart,” Oct. 23). He and his parents epitomize what this nation is all about.
The thought crossed my mind as I watched that Hillary Clinton wants to be commander-in-chief. Somehow I cannot picture her doing what President Bush did. With her disdain for the military, it would be a difficult role to play. She does not have this female’s vote.

.........and yet your proud of a draft dodger giving out medals??????????

I seem remember during the B. Clinton first presidential compaign the conservatives whining about their children having to go to war and fight for a draft dodger.

Let's see what do they call that...........? Hypocrisy, maybe.

You are right about this though, I can't picture her doing what Bush did either.

No, the ceremony epitomizes what this nation has become. Using its best and brightest as cannon fodder in a war based upon lies. I too cannot picture any other commander-in-chief doing what Bush did.

Rita your another con fool. Like his stunt landing on a aircraft carrier and pronouncing mission accomplished wasn't enough for you you keep buying into more of his PR stunts to promote his war that keeps draining our pockets and getting our troops killed. But your right I don't see Hillary doing this because I'm hopeing she ends this BS war. Please pull your head out of your GOP "A" !!!!!! Signed a veitnam vet that has been down this road before. What is your history with war?

Posted by larry on October 31, 2007 12:29 PM

Rita,
Wow, if you would have stopped your letter after the first paragraph, you would have written a very positive, important message. Instead, your second paragraph revealed that the point of the letter wasn't really your admiriation for Michael Murphy; it was your partisan politics.

Ergo, your second paragraph kind of belied and diminished the message of your first paragraph ... Smooth move, Ex-lax.

As opposed to draft-dodger W sitting in Mississippi snorting coke and getting drunk on Daddy's dime?

Go back to playing with your Barbie dolls.

I have a real question for everyone:

Is military service important as we elect the next "Commander in Chief?"

Personally, I do not believe that it is, and that if it is that important, it limits us to only one choice, and that would be Sen. McCain, as he is the ONLY legitimate candidate to have served in the military.

It would appear as we continue to move further away from candidates of the "baby boom" generation, mostly due to their increasing age, and begin to see candidates for national office from Generation X, the lack of military service, as it was not conscripted for our generation, will become more and more the case.

So I ask again, just how important is military service for our President?

Your letter is right to the point.

Brian,

Which letter are you referring to?

Which letter is everyone replying to Stan B? Are that inept in life?

Too bad he died for nothing except to give grounds on war profiteering!

Have any of you commentors read Luttrell's book about what the SEAL team was doing? This includes Denver's own Danny Dietz. There were on their way to kidnap a guy. If they couldn't do that, they were going to murder him. They were not soldiers, they were murderers.

Murphy and his team had been transformed into organized crime hit men. They were remorseless killers. Read how SEALS have been transformed into thugs that beat and kill unarmed people. Read how they reveel in their dirty deeds. Most Americans are ignorant of this transformation because even story about this group has ommitted, or sugarcoated, their mission.

Honoring murderers is despicable. It is metaphor for how self-rigtheous and stupid our country has become.

Sorry, 2:02. I meant to say: "What POINT are you referring to?".

Posted by Stan B on October 31, 2007 02:44 PM

Military experience makes a better president. Unfortunately, as you say, those of us who have served are few and far between anymore.
On the plus side, the soldiers serving now will be going into politics in the future, and putting "lessons learned" into their policies.

Why do people think that this President doing a heck of a job in Iraq? Nothing, and I mean nothing this administration has said about Iraq has come to fruitation. No WMDs, the Iraq Army has yet to stand up, the Mission has not been acomplished, and yet there are people who still support Bush's actions. For a person of normal inteligence, it is not hard to see why people are cynical about Iraq and are unable to share the right's optimism.
Supporting the troops, in my opinion, means more than standing on a stage and saying "I support the troops".

Dave,

I find your ignorance offensive. My brother in law is a SEAL team member, and the team that you are referring to, is out of his unit in Virginia Beach.

You may "read something, somewhere" about a biased opinion or story, but until you actually hear from those that do, do not pretend to know what the hell you are talking about. What you term "kid nap" was actually a mission to basically "arrest and bring in for questioning" a terror suspect. If that suspect resists, the use of deadly force was AUTHORIZED. There is a big difference between murder (intentionally killing with lack of justification) and national security.

I wouldn't expect you to have the comprehension to understand the difference, but maybe next time you will actually pause (I won't hope for you to THINK) before you go spewing diarrhea from your mouth.

Dan2 1:21,

Military service should not be required or preferred when voting for a president. What needs to be required is person who understands his/her responsibilities as president and will work for the benefit of all the people. I know that sounds corny but I would vote dem or rep if that person would show his/her face.

I have never in my voting life voted a straight ticket. Which is problem number one. People who vote party lines do this country a disservice everytime they step into that both.

I don't vote on social issues. People who voted for Bush because of abortion got nothing from it, in fact the morning after bill was approved with the reps holding both the senate and the congress. The christians got nothing from it and are now starting to realize this. And what did we get as a country? A war based on lies and deciet that has killed 4,000 of our bravest, debt into the Trillions and a system of government that looks more like a dictatorship than a government of the people. Just last week Bush had the military guards stop Joe Biden from going on to a military base. A leading senator for crying out loud.

In 2000, we kicked Al Gore out of the White House. Why? Because then president Bill Clinton had an affair with a bimbo. Forget that he was the vice president in an administration that balanced the budget and put us in fiscal recovery for the first time in decades or took our military into war, won and didn't lose a man. The voters wanted morality (their version of morality that is) back in the WH. Well, how do you like it now??????

Dan2 - Luttrell is Marcus Luttrell. He wrote the book "Lone Survivor". He was the lone survivor on the SEAL team with Dietz and Lt Murphy. HE says they were going to kill a guy. His book is NOT listed as fiction or fantasy. Perhaps you should researched my reference to Luttrell BEFORE you attacked.

I served in the military for 3 years(infantry leader). I am upset that our military has been turned into organized crime style murderers. You don't seemed to be upset that decent US military personnel have been turned into callous, depraved murderers. Perhaps you lack the courage to object to this reprehensible situation. Perhaps it is your cowardice to see the true situation, so you swallow the lies that you wish to hear.

A Marine general exhorted his troops that "shooting people is fun". He is the kind of officer that could have served in any competent but immoral militaty. Choose your place of conquest: My Lai, Sand Creek, British in the Boer War or the Opium War, Soviet Union in Hungary 1956, or with Chinese forces as they slaughtered the democracy protestors. You seem to supporting that mind set.

If you truly support your brother, you will insist that he not be placed in a situation where he will engage in immoral actions. The US military should DEFEND the Constitution and the US. They should only engage in war if Congress has DECLARED war.
