New grading system is an outrage
2.You are not expected to try. An example would be in math if we get something wrong on the homework but correct it we get an A.
3.Colleges are not going to know who to accept because they don’t know what you are actually getting. There is a big difference between a C and an A- but if you get either one of those you get a proficient.
Editor, as you can see this new grading system is a disaster so please publish my article.
A “proficient” student

I agree with you on the grading system.
Even in elementary my kids school has a weirde grading system.
From grades K-3 they have H, HS,S,I,N,U.
That stands for High Quality,High Satisfactory,Satisfactory Quality,Improvement in Progress,Needs Improvement, and Unsatisfactory Progress.
Alomg with these grades they are grade 1-4 for subjects within the subject. If a student is ahead of the subject and knows it they will still recieved a 2 ,which means working towards the standard, because the rest of the class hasn't been taught it yet.So kids can't get graded on what they know, but on what the other kids don't know.
Kids 4th and 5th get A.B.C.D and F.
I just recieved a letter outling a new grding system for tests and work papers that are sent home.
B-Beginning,Children cannot comeplete the task independently,They show little understanding of the concept or skill.
D-Developing,Children show some understanding. However, errors or misunderstandings still occur.
S- Secure,Children can apply the skill or concept correctly or ondependently.
I know of one mother who evidently didn't get the new memo. She keeps telling me her kid is doing great bringing all B's home on her papers.
What is wrong with the standards that have served us well for years? A,B,C,D,F
Our tax money is going to some suit who makes up this stuff.
I think this nonsense has got to stop.
Orian you are 100% right the grading systems will only hurt students. One by letting them think they are doing great when they are not and two not give the grades to the students that work for and deserve a clear" A "grade. If this nonsense keeps up the colleges will have to decipher the coded grades that all the school systems come up with. It's insane!
Posted by Can I get an AMEN! on October 23, 2007 08:59 AMWe hear you, Orion.
It stinks!!
Don't worry, however, as nothing that happens to you at DPS schools is going to hold you back in life unless you let it. My guess is, you are going to go far.
It's ATTITUDE that gets us where we want to go, Orion. Keep your eyes forward and shine the way your parents intended when you got that wonderful name!! Love it! :-)
God Bless Orion, you are growing up and setting this world on fire. You and others that think the same way will hopefully fix the problems that the adults screwed up, like this country.
Posted by Pam on October 23, 2007 12:11 PMWonderful to see a child in seventh grade who can make insightful and logical evaluation to recognize the deficiency of the change and the disadvantage to the student.
Good on you Orion to use your logical thinking skills!
Posted by fiesty on October 23, 2007 02:44 PMOrion,
You have a great attitude, Orion. Your letter has rekindled my faith in young people. There is hope after all. Great letter!!
Although the grading system at your school is ridiculous, at least you got a good lesson as to why socialistic trends are a bad idea. If you don’t work hard you get the same result as those who do. But what is worse is that if you do work hard you get the same result as those who do not.
Kathy,
Yours was a very sweet reply to Orion. Those are terrific words that I hope Orion will take to heart!
