Override SCHIP veto
For those unfortunates who were born without the proverbial silver spoon in
their mouths, there are enough good-hearted, common-sense people in both the
Senate and the House to override the SCHIP veto! Get to work!
Carol O'Brien, Denver
It is sad that parents in families are putting thier responsibility , and priorities on other things then health care. When a family makes over $50,000.00 a year and claims they can not afford any health care. Yet they can afford a new suv, or boat, or take the trip to cancun.
Why should the next family who makes $35,000.00 a year and CAN aford health care for a family of 5 pay for the others lake of common sense.
This bull carp of saying it is a right and entitlement, it is not! By expanding the program to include those who make twice the national average income is WRONG.
It is time people wake up and see the agenda for what it is. Making people more dependant on the government and less responsible for their own actions and decisions.
Next time you go to pay for your little extravigant toys, look at the monthly cost of it compared to your insurance. Then ask yourself is your health care provider competant, are they helpful and provide good care. Then ask your self is it the health care or is it the insurance companies that are screwing things up.
Posted by The Shadow on October 29, 2007 05:08 AMCarol,
It all comes down to this. I am for health care for those children who's parents who clearly can't afford it. That said, it is absolutely absurd and wrong to fund health care for 25 year old "children" and those making 3 to 4 times the poverty level. Why should taxpayers, who can't afford health insurance for themselves and their children, pay the costs of health insurance for those who make 2 to 3 times the money they do.
How much money do you make Carol. do you have children, do you have health insurance for them. If so, do you want the government controling every aspect of that health care. Are you awareof the inevitable, and incompetent, government bureaucracy needed to administer the program and it will take up 25% to 30% of the budget for that health care program.
Whenever government takes over what is esentiality private enterprise, the budget increases and the inherent waste that goes part and parcel with government bureaucracy sucks up another 20% . And, what else, it require taxes increase on the public to pay for the ever increasing costs.
It's a case of the political fox guarding the tax payers hen house.
Posted by Allen Campbell on October 29, 2007 06:16 AMcarol you lost so you can stop beating the dog on this one. not every one believes the lies you think are true.
My husband provides health insurance for our family. He works hard and supports me being a stay at home mom.We both are in agreement that we will do without the vacations and the new cars etc...
Notice how I used the word support.
Every family whether they are 2 parents working, one parent,or single moms or dads, need to fix their priorities. If you decide that the Walt Disney vacation is more important than health insurance than do not expect my family to pay for it.
Posted by Children should comes first not boyfriends on October 29, 2007 07:45 AMMore and more parents put toys ahead of health care and then want the tax payers to pay for their health care.
This is child abuse. Not the veto of a outrageous bill the Democrats have come up with.

Posted by ollie on October 29, 2007 09:53 AMWow, talk about a thread that exemplifies ignorance on the subject!
Making four times the poverty rate in New York or California is quite a different thing than making it in Tennessee.
Assumptions about misplaced priorities of American families are mere conjecture or anecdotal fallacies- mean spirited in tone and off base in reality .
Only one state (New York) offers eligibility up to four times the federal poverty level (FPL), and that is because New York has an extremely high cost of living. Most states limit SCHIP to children with family incomes at or below 200 percent of FPL, and approximately 91% of children in SCHIP in 2006 had family incomes below 200% of FPL (according to the Congressional Research Service). Neither the House nor Senate bill would change state eligibility requirements, and states should keep this flexibility.

I have been asking everyone backing this new SCHIP bill two simple questions. Why do we need to expand it when only half of the children currently eligible are enrolled and covered? Shouldn't we just extend the current program with a 5 billion dollar increase and concentrate on those children first?
Posted by jgd777 on October 29, 2007 10:15 AM"...common-sense people." ???????
1-25 years of age is not a child, that's an adult.
2-$83,000 per year households don't live on Tobacco Road and are not candidates for soup kitchens.
3-Moving people from privately financed healthcare plans to taxpayer financed plans is not progress, its a step backwards.
4-BULLSCHIP is BULLSCHIP...its nothing but a Trojan Horse for socialized medicine--burry it!
Posted by Hank on October 29, 2007 10:17 AMOllie, but I bet you can aford your own health insurance though now can't you.
Posted by The Shadow on October 29, 2007 11:54 AMSo let me get this straight. I have to do without vacations and I have to drive old cars so I can pay for a broken healthcare insurance to a bunch of greedy rich capitalist. AMERICA WHAT A COUNTRY!!!!!
Posted by larry on October 29, 2007 12:19 PMAmen apparently thinks that if a family can afford either toys for their children or health care, the government should not help them with their health care and their kids should just do without any toys. Ah, yes, America loves its children.
Posted by Truth on October 29, 2007 12:24 PMCarol,
If you cannot afford the cost of raising children why are you forcing me to pay for your child's health care? If you cannot afford the cost of a child why not keep your legs closed?
Posted by on October 29, 2007 12:39 PMSCHIP's opponents unleashed a vicious attack on its aims. Some of the questions they raised, and Jane Bryant Quinn's answers:
Is SCHIP "government run"? No. Like Medicare, it's government funded but privately run. The states contract with insurance companies (usually HMOs). Many patients have a choice of plans, and pay premiums and co-pays.
Does it cover illegal aliens? No, although this is the wing nuts' nastiest slur. SCHIP doesn't even cover legal immigrants until they've been here for at least five years.
Did the bill squander taxpayers' money on the undeserving middle class? No again. It financed coverage for 3.2 million lower-income kids, including 2.5 million who are eligible but haven't been included yet. It could have paid for 600,000 more kids from families earning up to triple the poverty level ($61,950, for four). That's the income group losing health insurance today, mainly because fewer companies offer the benefit or the premiums cost too much.
Is SCHIP funding more adults than kids? No way. Adults make up fewer than 10 percent of the SCHIP population. They're insured under waivers approved by the Bush administration, back when the president supported the program. Eleven states cover pregnant women. Eleven cover low-income parents (family coverage gets more kids signed up). The bill that Bush vetoed prohibits new waivers for parents and phases single adults out of the program.
Are parents dropping private coverage to go on the government program? Some parents switch, but that can't be helped. "It's like fishing for tuna," says MIT economist Jonathan Gruber. "When you let down the tuna nets, you catch some dolphin, too."
The data on switching: Among new kids enrolled, 28 percent had insurance at some point during the preceding six months. Half had already lost it, mainly due to a parent out of work. An additional 7 percent dropped it because they couldn't afford the premiums. Five percent of the cases were unclear. Only 2 percent canceled private coverage to join SCHIP—a substitution rate that's as good as it gets. Public programs are the most cost-efficient way to cover the uninsured, Gruber says.
Bush's offer on SCHIP is $4.77 billion—not enough to maintain the program as is. Monthly enrollment of children and some pregnant women would have to drop by 840,000 over five years, the Congressional Budget Office says—that is, unless the president ups his bid.
An analysis of Bush's proposal by the Lewin Group, a health-care consulting firm, found that 80 percent of the money would go to people already insured. Seventy percent would benefit families earning more than $50,000, with most of the gains in the highest brackets.
Posted by TalkingPoints on October 29, 2007 12:53 PMMonthly enrollment of children and some pregnant women would have to drop by 840,000 over five years,
I thought this was for kids and not pregnant women. seems your argument is full of ship there talking points.
also did anyone of you socialist read where the HSA. thats the socialist health care in England, has stated that 70K are going eles where for care.
Talking points:
S-chip government funded just like it would be if we had "universal coverage"; Medicare and Medicaid commonly deny coverage/payment for reasons that have nothing to do with Medical need; Caid/Care can and often do make the decision on whether or not you can have/get many medical needs; i deal with that daily.
does it cover illegal aliens? No, not if they play by the rules/law; have you heard of fake ID/SS card?
Is S-chip funding more adults then kids? No, it shouldn't fund ANY adults according to your 3.2 million kids that it is supposed to fund; this alone is reason enough to get rid of the program entirely (in my opinion), also sounds like squandering to me! By the way I have had health insurance thru my employer (5th employer in 19 years) the last 19 years and have not made as much as 50k a year and brought-up 2 kids I want reperations!
Well it looks like most of us agree with Bush. He said he will agree to a bill expanding the rules when 90% of the children eligible under the current rules are enrolled.
The dichotomy of toys versus health care is not rare. What is rare, in words at least, is people realizing that they are responsible for their choices and their children and should budget to allow health care first and toys second. Why would so many raised to keep one hand out for a government check even consider taking care of themselves or their children? Many leaders are telling them it is only a matter of time before the rich have to pay the bill for everyone.
My family buys perhaps one new item of clothing per person per year with maybe two for the grand daughter. There are thrift shops for second hand clothes and toys.
We got a letter and three phone calls telling us we were eligible for the CHIP even though she is covered under our private insurance. How many more are already covered but counted as uninsured? Is is so hard to believe that the governmental nannies want more victims to control?
Any attempt to pass this bill over a veto will fail. Don't ask Republicans. Ask Democrats in tough races. Most of them are against it too. Just like with amnesty....politicians can try to call it chocolate pudding but the smell labels it manure to those with the wits to think for themselves.
Real reason the libbies are still pushing it is to gain personal political power.
momma y: "What is rare, in words at least, is people realizing that they are responsible for their choices and their children and should budget to allow health care first and toys second."
Of course, momma y has no idea about how many parents fall into one category or the other. But when you are on a rant and rave, the truth really doesn't matter.
"Real reason the libbies are still pushing it is to gain personal political power."
More slander from the slander queen. momma y obviously has no idea what motivates different liberals. To assume that liberals in general are not primarily interested in the welfare of people is to expose a sick mind. But then when you are on a rant and rave, neither the truth nor integrity matter.

Then again, we wouldnt need any tax dollars at all, why not just pay for the SCHIP using money from the Iraq War money tree? The war has been virtually free, no extra taxes or anything! Let's just pick a few extrra billion from George's Money tree!
