Valedictorian speech
Thursday, October 4 at 2:00 PM

Vince Rozmiarek of Indian Hills writes:

Speaking to Dianne Moyers directly —- you ask “who decides"? I thought, collectively, we all did, though our system of rules and laws in this great Country we live in. The rules Diane Corder violated were as clear as black and white, as laid out by the school before she gave her speech. She misled the school about what she was going to say, plain and simple. Would Jesus intentionally deceive in order to spread His message? Other than spewing your venom at me, Ms. Moyers, did you really have a point? When this is all over, we’ll find out who’s right, and who loses their lawsuit.

READER COMMENTS

Stand up, stand up for Jesus, ye soldiers of the cross; Lift high His royal banner, it must not suffer loss .From victory unto victory His army shall He lead, Till every foe is vanquished, and Christ is Lord indeed.

Stand up, stand up for Jesus, the solemn watchword hear; If while ye sleep He suffers, away with shame and fear; Where’er ye meet with evil, within you or without, Charge for the God of battles, and put the foe to rout.

Stand up, stand up for Jesus, the trumpet call obey; Forth to the mighty conflict, in this His glorious day. Ye that are brave now serve Him against unnumbered foes; Let courage rise with danger, and strength to strength oppose.

Stand up, stand up for Jesus, stand in His strength alone; The arm of flesh will fail you, ye dare not trust your own. Put on the Gospel armor, each piece put on with prayer; Where duty calls or danger, be never wanting there.

Stand up, stand up for Jesus, each soldier to his post, Close up the broken column, and shout through all the host: Make good the loss so heavy, in those that still remain, And prove to all around you that death itself is gain.

Stand up, stand up for Jesus, the strife will not be long; This day the noise of battle, the next the victor’s song. To those who vanquish evil a crown of life shall be; They with the King of Glory shall reign eternally.

From victory unto victory His army shall He lead, Till every foe is vanquished, and Christ is Lord indeed.

Shut up, Shut up about Jesus.

Those of us who don't have a relationship with him is not because we haven't heard of him.

We have, we've rejected him, and it's none of your business. Get over it.

seems like the point of most religions is to tell you who you should hate

Isn't hard to have a relationship with someone who has been dead for 2000 years?

Such a peaceful hymn...

Here we go again!

Beat! Beat! Beat! On that dead old horse;
Beat that dead old horse some more!
Keep on beating, and beating, that dead old horse,
'Til for sure it gets up. And, before
You know it, we'll win that great race;
Where getting to Heaven's our goal.
We'll win that race with a dead old horse
Cause Jesus will save its poor soul!

Old Grouch,

Old Dead Horse!! Was that the nickname your students gave you when you taught at University? It actually sounds more fitting than Old Grouch.

Watch it! OG might not qualify as my prom date but he posts with his wits instead of another part of his anatomy. That means I care about what he thinks. I hope he comes to the Share sale Saturday and I get to meet him. Most of the time you learn more from people with different viewpoints than you do from those who agree with you. Try it. It is fun too.

yawn here we go again with the same old bs. if you dont believe you dont have to listen and why should you tell someone else what they can say?

Old Grouch is constantly posting regarding his belief in free of speech. In one of his post he stated he did not agree with NAMBLA's website instructing others how to rape children but defended their right to say it. However on the other hand he ridicules Diane Corder about her speech where she mentions Jesus. Just makes one wonder where he truly stands on "freedom of speech". Raping children OK! Mentioning Jesus ....?

jgd777-- I don't know Old Grouch, but I'll address your posting. Attending a function sponsored by an institution that isn't pushing any religious viewpoint is one thing and being shang-hi'd into a sermon is another. There's a huge difference between reading about how to do anything and actually doing that thing. If one wants to attend a church service all one has to do is throw a rock and hit a house of worship. That's not illegal. If some sick pig sets out to harm a child, he's going to get thrown in jail when he gets caught because that is illegal, immoral and unethical.

jgd777,

I am in no way ridiculing Diane Corder. I couldn't really care less about Diane Corder. She's had her "15 minutes of fame" - several times over, and over, and over, and . . . again.

Indeed, what she did is also over and done with, too.

The "dead horse" is another letter dealing with something that was, quite some time ago, well past its "sell by" date, and another line of postings on something already "beaten to death" weeks ago.

The little box at the bottom of the page is headed: "Post A Comment". I posted my comment. Just as you have yours.

Being a Christian is like being a pumpkin. God lifts you up, takes you in, and washes all the dirt off of you. He opens you up, touches you deep inside and scoops out all the yucky stuff-- including the seeds of doubt, hate, greed, etc. Then He carves you a new smiling face and puts His light inside you to shine for all the world to see. This was passed on to me from another pumpkin. Now, it is your turn to pass it to a pumpkin. I liked this enough to send it to all the pumpkins in my patch.

Was this student also required not to ridicule our government, bring up politics, say that she supported the war, agree with abortion rights, suggest experimenting with drugs or doing anything else illegal. Any of those subjects would have been inappropriate for a graduation speech as well, but the school didn't tell her that she couldn't talk about those things. Given that, I fully believe the student was in the right. These are the same schools that will allow students to initiate a walk-out over the Pledge of Allegiance without repercutions, but won't let a military recruiter come to the school to let a student know about some of his or her options for a future after graduation. I bet she would have received her diploma if she would have said "Smoke more pot!" at the end of her speech.
