Bombarded by beggars
Hi, I live downtown and have for a long time have wondered why, if panhandling is illegal in (downtown) Denver, why am I still bombarded by beggars everyday, when I leave my home or walk down the street? It is a complete nuisance and safely issue.
I literally had someone pounding on my car as I drove away from my parking space at 16th and Wazee at 10:45 this morning. When I cracked my window to ask the issue he said he needed $16 to sleep at the Samaritan House and wouldn’t take no for an answer. When I told him I didn’t have any cash on me he said he would walk me down to the ATM and wait! He wouldn’t let go of my car until I gave him something. I ended up caving and giving him $1 to get him to leave me alone and he still cursed me as I drove away. I am so sick of this! I know Mayor Hickenlooper has done a lot to help but there is no true police monitoring of this. It is truly unfair to the tax paying citizens of downtown to still be dealing with this issue at this level.
Another issue along the same line is the homeless. At both of my places downtown (18th and Blake and 24th and Walnut...just moved) I had bums sleeping at the doorway (blocking entry and exit), on my sidewalk, in the ally etc. This is private property and still they are allowed to sleep in plain view of the police and are not moved. Why is this being ignored? This makes me feel completely unsafe extremely bothered.
This issue needs to be addressed and taken seriously. I would love to see what downtown Denver is still doing to stop this, or has the City decided enough attention has been paid to it and has walked away??

move to a gated community if you don't like people that can't afford 2 places, or even 1. The purpose of the Denver Police is not to keep you feeling comfortable wherever you happen to be in the city...People beg for money because people give it to them when they do, if you don't like it then don't give them money, even a dollar...

Perhaps a little reading comprehension might serve you well.
First, the behavior of this panhandling individual against the letter writer, if true, is illegal.
Second, the writer only has one place, note the "just moved" line.
Third, it is the "purpose", borrowing your phrase, of the Denver Police to assure public safety. Thereby making the citizen of the city fell comfortable.
Go kung fu on their asses. Show them the old ropa dopa Ali showed his opponents. Hit em so hard their whole family will feel it.

Do you really think that people so down on their luck must all be liberals? Do you really believe that they have any political affiliations? If so, how do you know that for a fact? Did you, once again, ask any of them?
Or do you arrive at your conclusions through the use of your power to read minds? Or is it just the extreme rightwing doctrin you adhere to that makes you so able to perceive the truth of anyone simply by driving by them or seeing them on the tube, that you know their liberals? And, are there no republican bums or panhandlers and, explain to me how you know that for a fact.

For your information, I'm not a liberal democrat or conservative republican because one is as bad as the other.
If you stand for personal responsibility why are you not against the smoking ban which takes personal responsibility from people to choose whether they will go into a smoking establishment or not, and gives the right to government to take away that resposibility so they can have the personal choices upheld.
You only know one thing and that is what your told to believe by higher up rightwing nuts. Zealousness has always caused social, political and economic problems and yours is no exception to that rule. And being blind to everything that does not agree with your indoctrinated personal beliefs hardly qualifies you as a judge of anyone.

Now how did he get that way? What kind of nasty adult would buy booze for a kid this young? He's bumming a light for a cigarette and falling over everyone on the mall bus.
The mall needs a whole lot more policing. Social Services and the police department need to get their collective arses on the job.

If you really wanted something done about it you should have called the police and pressed charges against him. The police are not going to waste their time monitoring homeless. But they will surely act on a 911 call.
