Englewood animal shelter has caring workers
It is obvious that the Humane Society's Englewood Shelter on South Platte River
Drive could use an increase in funding, but the people who work there are
certainly committed and caring people who really love animals ("Humane Society
vows to stay open," Oct. 26).
On Oct. 10, my husband and I went to this facility to look at the cats. Our cat
had died and we were considering adopting another. I emphasize that we were just
looking at the time. Thanks to Mary, the woman at the main desk, we left with
two of the most wonderful 10-month-old kittens in the world.
We talked with several of the people working at the shelter that day and were
impressed by their dedication to their animal charges.
It is sad that a lack of funding is placing these wonderful people and so many
lost and abandoned creatures in jeopardy.
I encourage anyone with an extra dollar to consider sending it to the Englewood
shelter.
Donna Rogers, Littleton
I would never contribute a dime to these shelters.
My family and I had lost the second of our dogs we had for 16 years. We had already bought a purebred Yellow labrador and she needed someone to play with besides the kids.
So we decide to adopt.
A little note to Donna Rogers who adopted 2 cats. KEEP THEM INSIDE! The neighborhood shouldn't have to deal with cats running everywhere.I'm glad we have a fox in our neighborhood, he's doing a great job of eating the outdoor cats
We went to a shelter downtown,I can't remember it's name,but it is a no-kill shelter.
We looked on their website and saw some dogs that were possibilities. We piled in the van and went domntown. We filled out about a 3 page form and questionaire,
We then started looking at the dogs. It was heart breaking and I wish I could take all them home.We really liked a lab mix who was kind and gentle and fun. They asked us if we could go back home and bring in our Lab to see if they get along. So we went all the way home to get our dog and bring her down to meet this new dog.
They got along great and played well together,we thought we had found a match and my kids fell in love with the dog. This was an all day ordeal.
As we were sitting there discussing what we would have to get on the way home, a person from the shelter came up and said our application was rejected because we didn't walk our dog.Our references all said we were great responsible pet owners, but some animal nazi said we couldn't adopt because we didn't walk our dog.
We tried to reason with her and tell her the reason is we have a huge fully fenced backyard and the kids play with her and clean up after our dog everyday. We took her for walks before and their always seems to be a dog running loose and the big park near our house is not clean because of owners who don't pick up after their dogs.
Sorry she said we don't allow anyone to adopt that does not walk their dog everyday on a leash.
My kids and I were stunned and heart broken.
Our next door neighbors adopt dogs all the time. The get theirs from the Denver Dumb Friends. The dogs are never played with, they are never cleaned up after.they stay outside no matter what the weather or how cold it is. The owner just has a big metal trough for food and water. I never see them playing or spending anytime with the dogs. He never cuts the back so it's all a weed jungle the dogs get to make their way through, they bark late at night, they are treated like lawn ornaments.
It cracks me up when the tell us they rescued them, I'm thinking from what?
So dogs are adopted out to people who get them just to "resue them" and we are denied adopting a dog to a loving ,caring family because we don't walk our dog on a leash?
Yet these people adopt ,oh wait, "rescue dogs and could care less about them.
These shelters are run by people who love to have this power over people and think they know what is best for animals. They adopt out to people who either lie or the shelter just doesn't care or they have these rules that have nothing to do with whether the dog is going to a loving home.We will never go to a shelter to adopt. I rather pay money than deal with a bunch of animal nazi's.
