Let Iraqis try Blackwater agents
If Iraq is really a sovereign country, which is the fiction maintained by the Bush administration, then why aren’t the Blackwater USA personnel who are accused of murdering 17 innocent Iraqis accountable to the criminal justice system in that country? (“Promises shield guards in killing of 17 Iraqis,” Oct. 30.)
It is outrageous that our government arrogates to itself the authority to give these contractors immunity from criminal prosecution. That they were under contract to the U.S. government changes nothing.
Suppose the tables were turned. What would you think if Iraqis under contract to Iraq’s government were given immunity by that government after murdering Americans on our streets?
We shouldn’t be surprised by the treatment of Iraq as a ward of the United States government. That ugly attitude has been at the center of U.S. policy ever since President Bush decided to go to war.
John E. Cairnes, Limon
Yeah its so outrageous. NOT! The only ugly attitude in this war is the LYING LIBERALS.
Posted by on November 12, 2007 10:25 AMpoor wittle johnny is all upset that he cant get his way with even his progressive liberals in congress that he has to promote his own hate. please run over to iraq right now and tell the terrorists how sorry you are and that you are there to make nice.

So you support the killing of innocent life?

Surprised that a wingnut would bring this up. How many soldiers died in Bosnia? That is how you do a regime change.

He said nothing about the war being right or wrong, and he has a valid point. If a group of Iraqi contractors killed 17 Americans on US soil, would you be OK with those Iraqis not being prosecuted because of something THEIR government promised? This isn't a conservative-liberal/ pro war-anti war issue. Its a simple case of right and wrong. The fact that the 2 of you would turn it into a left-right debate proves the shallowness of your intellect. The 17 Iraqis weren't terrorists. Most Iraqis aren't terrorists, and not every Iraqi that sets off an IED is part of Al Qaeda. I have even read that Blackwater employees had, in the past, fired on US troops by mistake. What a joke the 2 of you are.
10:25/12:05
Did you guys know that Blackwater is being investigated for possibly smuggling arms to the Kurdistan Workers Party, a group that has been labeled as a terrorist group by the US State Dept., UN, and European Union?
The real question is why the state department and the CIA can't use US Marines like they do wherever else in the world we need guards at US installations. .

Because we don't have the troops necessary for success in Iraq without a draft.
Posted by jay on November 12, 2007 04:51 PMAmen jay and we sure ain't gonna get the first 2 anonymous chickenhawks to go fight the wars they encourage. Typical Bush loving cowards.

The military doesn't want or need draftees.Even with the Dems gutting the Armed Forces,a draft is unnecessary. We have consistently met recruiting goals and have plenty of volunteer, active duty professional soldiers. The only reason morons like you and Charles Rangel mention the draft is to scare gullible moms and young men into voting for the Dems give up, pull out and run "anti war" ticket in '08.
hikingartist-
The military is made up overwhelmingly by Republicans, remember?Or don't you recall when the Dems fought to disregard and throw out votes legally cast by internationally deployed US servicemen back in 2000?
I guess that make Democrats the cowards huh?
BO hit the nail on the head. Doesn't matter which "side" you are on.. You don't even see sailors stationed in Japan getting this kind of preferential treatment. Makes the US look selfish, petty and stupid - I don't like that.
Posted by Mac on November 12, 2007 10:03 PMNow, even drug convicts can join the Army.
Posted by rick on November 12, 2007 10:15 PMSo the Dems gutted the military. With 7 years under their belt, have the Republics fixed that problem? Gutted 7 years ago, and Bush can`t fix it.?
Posted by Sharon B. on November 12, 2007 10:34 PMAs the author of this letter to the editor, I find it fascinating how often it is assumed that if you're against this war, you're a liberal, and that you didn't object to Clinton bombing Bosnia. I am a libertarian (and supporter of Ron Paul) who opposed the Bosnian misadventure as strongly as I opposed the Iraq War.
To today's "conservatives" who are in favor of the Iraq war, I ask: How consistent are *you*? Were you also in favor of Clinton's bombing of Bosnia? If Gore had won in 2000 and had invaded Iraq, would you have supported his decision?
BO, your comments are right on.
Posted by John E. Cairnes on November 13, 2007 10:04 AMI'm also amused on how everything turns to a left vs. right argument, and never stays on the original subject. The next post will be about 'Hillary wearing pants' or something asinine like that.
It is possible to be against this war, to be for arresting these Blackwater criminals, be against the bombing of Bosnia, to be against the lobbing of cruise missiles into aspirin factories, yet still be for a strong military that actually follows the Constitution. That is, a military that protects our country, not invades others, and has troops in more than 130 countries! There is one candidate who points this out, and his name is Ron Paul. He's got my vote!
"The military doesn't want or need draftees"
How are things in lolllipop valley out there in munchkin land beyond the rainbow? our own generals have admitted that not only do we need 150K more troops to "win" in Iraq, our current military is at the breaking point.
What part about those facts do you not understand...or were you just not aware of them?
Posted by jay on November 13, 2007 06:14 PMAll our generals DONT say that jay,
where is your link?
lol...apparently someone needs a little tutoring. I don't mind, but I'm going to have to charge you.
Why don't you start some self study in the meantime.
Google "Breaking point" and "iraq"
And when you're done with that google "several hundred thousand" and "operation desert fox" and "iraq" and "abizaid"
Good luck with that.
