Ritter gets free pass
I find it interesting that the Rocky Mountain News (“Source of Beauprez ads charged,” Oct. 26) and other media outlets continue to focus on criminal charges against an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent who exposed the irresponsible conduct of then-Denver District Attorney Bill Ritter who gave ridiculous plea-bargains to illegal alien felons, rather than on Ritter’s questionable practices.
Ritter has failed to adequately justify his inexplicable conduct and policies in giving slaps on the wrist to violent, drug-dealing criminals who entered and remained here illegally.
From the beginning, there has been a true double-standard in this story — with Ritter getting the same free pass from the media that he gave illegal alien felons.
Anthony J. Fabian, Aurora
Justice has always been an role of the dice, and it seems and now political correctness has been added to the mix, just as historically, money, influence, power and greed, have corrupted true justice into the abortion of the rule of law it is today.
When District Attorneys shirk their responsibility to the public's best interests and are allowed by judges or the Attorney General to pick and choose which cases they will prosecuted and what charges are involved, the stage is set for the corruption of the rule of law.
I think if the writer, Mr. Fabian, can establish a pattern proving Ritter, as district attorney, consistently under prosecuted illegal alien felons and in doing showed a gross abrogation of the law, that would be grounds for a law suit. That is the only way to fix the brokendown legal system we are faced with today.

Posted by conservativewhine on November 5, 2007 06:29 AMSome people just can't accept the fact that the wise citizens of Colorado got tired of the politically bankrupt GOP.
Posted by Ollie on November 5, 2007 06:42 AMThis is where the bumper sticker slogan 'what part of illegal don't you understand' makes this a concern over race rather than law.
Let's take this nice and slow:
- The ICE agent broke the law.
- Ritter didn't.
- Illegal immigrants break the law.
- Legal immigrants don't.
If you defend or condone the ICE agent's crime on some contextual basis that -you- think important (such as the need to change immigration policy, or shed light on Ritter's past actions), you open the same door to defend/condone the crime illegal immigrants commit on the same relative basis.
Posted by on November 5, 2007 06:57 AMWhy doesn't the ICE Agents action fall under the Whistle Blower Act?
If it doesn't ,in my opinion he did the right thing by exposing the D.A.'s office breaking laws so they wouldn't have to deal with illegals.
Another question for the now D.A. in office.
How long does it take to charge someone with murder when they confessed?
I guess they forgot about Neveah.

By The Denver Post Editorial Board
"When Coloradans elected Bill Ritter as governor, they thought they were getting a modern-day version of Roy Romer, a pro-business Democrat. Instead, they got Jimmy Hoffa.
Ritter campaigned under the guise of a moderate "new Democrat" but now we know he's simply a toady to labor bosses and the old vestiges of his party — a bag man for unions and special interests.
The governor on Friday unveiled his plan to drive up the cost of doing business in Colorado by forcing collective bargaining on thousands of state employees.
We're concerned this may be the beginning of the end of Ritter as governor.
By pandering to unions, and the ever-shrinking 7.7 percent of the electorate that belong to unions, he's broken his "Colorado Promise" to voters. His promise to usher in a new era of collaborative government — where business and labor, Democrats and Republicans, would all be at the table — was nothing more than a sham. "

This is precisely the issue. The ICE agent broke a law, but you personally believe it was justified. Illegal immigrants break the law, but they personally believe it is justified. Aside from skin color, what explains the difference in how the law should be applied?
Posted by on November 5, 2007 08:09 AMRitter as Gov is the same sneaky, behind-closed doors, boiler-room, greazed-palm, guy he always was. We got a modern-day Huey Long right here in Colorado. Let's make sure we help the Denver' Post's prediction come true--Ritter needs to be a one-termer, Colorado deserves better.
Posted by Hank on November 5, 2007 08:18 AMWhat happened to open Government? The ICE agent committed an illegal act (?) of conscience. We should know, at least, what our local officials are doing. I support Governer Ritter for the most part. I hope he does a better job as our Governor than he did as DA. Remember Governor, you represent the legal citizens of Colorado, not illegal aliens.
Posted by Tom on November 5, 2007 08:21 AMIt is only naive people who believe politcians will keep their promises after being elected. They are all intentional liars in the first place, when running for public office. They must know, if they get elected and they are not incompetent, that they must compromise and accept the entrenched and hallowed tactic of legislators, the under the table deal, if they have any hope of getting any bill passed that even resembles what they promised, in any legislature, state or federal.
Posted by Allen Campbell on November 5, 2007 08:35 AMLook on the bright side,Hank.....Collective bargaining for state workers also allows for lockouts, whose consequence is that those locked out are not at their desks working mischief on the rest of us.Now if we could only persuade the Guv to let himself be locked out!
Posted by Jimminy on November 5, 2007 10:10 AMSorry,folks-got caught up in this thread going astray.Of course it was about the Ritter camp going after the ICE whistleblower for breaking rather an arcane law, thereby diverting attention from their candidate's ongoing disregard for the public good......
In a more general context, now is probably a good time to reiterate that government routinely exempts itself and its agents from the laws that they make and so vigorously (but selectively) enforce.
Former USAG John "Disco" Ashcroft, Bush, frmer Denver Deputy uSAG John Suthers, and Denver Federal Judge Ed "$3K lap dancing enthusiast" Nottingham (GHWB appointee), all sentenced ex-black Denver US Marshal Benny Bailey (26 years service) to 6 years in federal prison because he lied (PERJURY) about having sex with a white woman (NOOKIE-GATE). The white Denver US Secret Service O-I-C, whipped his wife's rear-end, and brandished his service revolver during the event. Denver Deputy USAG Troy Eid and bra-stuffing Snotty Notty, didn't question this agent under oath. This agent simply retired with full retirement benefits. The Bailey family lost all of their federal retirement benefits.
(R) State Rep. David Balmer and Owens violated the Voting RIghts Act of 1965. Balmer perjured his state electoion application. He lied (PERJURY) when he decalred he had law clerk experience. When was told of this voter fraud, he laughed and blew it off. I think Blamer and Owens should be sentenced (Snotty-Notty) to 6 years in SuperMax or Ft. Leavenworth where they will be greeted as prison wives.
Posted by justaswinging on November 5, 2007 01:00 PMLetter writer Mr. Fabian is 100% right. What he points out is how the media frames the issue. The media act like the leaking of the information was the awful deed and ignore the fact that Ritter went easy on illegal aliens that commit felonies. If a Democrat had leaked information that made a Republican look bad any crime commited to get the information would not be mentioned in the media. All the media would focus on would be the information that demonized the Republican. If we try hard we may be able to think of some examples.
Posted by An American on November 5, 2007 02:49 PMAlso if the information was leaked about a Republican the Democrats would be saying that the people have a right to know these thing about someone running for governor.I bet the Democrats are not saying that about the information leaked about Ritter. They are instead protecting their governor and their illegal alien felon friends.
Posted by An American on November 5, 2007 03:02 PMAs always An American dodges the questions and rambles incoherently on his hatred for the Democrats. From An Americans postings on this page and others we can clearly see what a total coward and chickenhawk he is. I would say he is a hateful man, except that to call him a 'man' is a slight to every man in the room. He has been asked repeatedlly to state his military experience (NONE) and to state why he hasnt enlisted. It should be apparent he is too much a coward to enlist, he 'pretends' to support the war but hides under his bed instead of joining our military.
His cowardness makes it obvious that he hates America and hates freedom. His lack of intelligence and his total cowardice shows in every post. If you cant tell us why you are too chicken to enlist can you tell us why you hate this country so much? I encourage every real American in this room to spit on this spineless excuse of a man.
And today's Rocky had a little piece about the Denver DA's office accessing that same classified database for political gain.Former Denver District Attorney Bill Ritter has not commented on the matter.
