Speak up, Mr. Powell
Thursday, November 1 at 12:01 AM

Where is Colin Powell? Now that retired Lt. Gen. Ricardo Sanchez has told the public the truth about Iraq, Powell should feel freer — and for that matter obligated — to do likewise and perhaps prevent yet another war, this time with Iran.
Here’s hoping he’ll add his voice and gravitas.

Colin Powell had a promising career and George W and Dick Cheney flushed it down the toilet. He will never be able to live down the presentation of lies to the UN. Too bad because he was a decent Republican. Maybe the Neocons wanted to destroy him, who knows.

Had Powell resigned before the invasion of Iraq he could have stopped this war. He forgot the difference between a general and a diplomat.

As Chairman of the Joint Chiefs it was his duty to obey the President's orders regardless of his own belief in them.

As Secretary of State his duty was to resign if he disagreed with the President's policy.

He allowed himself to be used and should simply fade into obscurity.

Powell is single handedly responsible for the support for Iraq war. If he had just told the truth at the UN, Bush would have been sacked in 2004, and his reputation sealed as a dufus.

Powell has since said that the report he gave to the UN and Congress (obviously cooked) was the low point of his professional career.

You'd almost have to feel sorry for the puppet if his actions hadn't spawned the deaths of tens of thousands of innocent civilians and thousands of soldiers and tens of thousands of brand new maimed vets.

Sorry Jay I can't feel sorry for any of Bushes puppets. When this term is over the whole bunch of them can rot in hell. They know what the did and what their objectives where. And all the right wing fools that bought into their lies that cost thousands of lifes just because they felt they had to be loyal to their beloved republican party well their day will come too.

Quite right larry..it's hard to justify ANY of the actions of this administration in regards to Iraq.

I still can't believe apologists still exist for the atrocious policies we've seen over the last 6 years...but I will say that their numbers have been steadily dwindling with each new fiasco.

Colin Powell would be the best candidate in the loser field for Republicans. One more reason the GOP can blame Bush for crumbling their party.

So here is the thing; our culture portrays generals as these fearless and principled warriors. In reality the system selects for a certain set of intellectual and interpersonal skills and attributes, foremost of these being obedience to authority, and being able to zip it when required to.

So Powell performed exactly to par, he obeyed and shut up even when he knew better.

I don't see much bravery or integrity in that, but plenty people see that as really classy and honorable.
Go figure.

Powell will live with his decisions and regret those decisions for the rest of his life.

Bush and Cheney will simply skip on over to the next business opportunity.
