It's Just a Theory

The question in the Republican presidential debate was whether anyone on the stage didn't believe in evolution.

Sam Brownback's hand shot up. Then Mike Huckabee's. Then, finally, Tom Tancredo's. That's 30 percent of the Republican candidates, for those of you who believe in percentages.

There was no follow-up question. So we didn't get to hear what exactly Tancredo does believe in on the topic. I'm sure ace Rocky reporter M.E. Sprengelmeyer will be on the case.

Here's a quick take on how each candidate did, from my view at the Reagan Library:

Romney: Successfully nominated himself to be considered in the top group. His biggest opponent was Fred Thompson, who wasn't there. A good night for Romney, which it was, made it a bad night for Thompson.

Giuliani: Looked uncomfortable as only pro-choicer on stage. Looked unprepared for the big question. Looked like the only thing he had to say was that he'd reduced crime in New York. Was he running for DA or president?

McCain: Looked scary at times, funny at other times. In other words, it was like any other day you spend with McCain.

Tancredo: Had tough time getting a word in. If he had had a bomb to throw, it would have exploded in his hand.

Huckabee: Best second-tier guy. Smart and funny, if evolutionarily challenged. I'm not sure why he hasn't gained any traction.

Paul: You're kidding, right?

Brownback: Terrible night. Can't recall a thing he said. And this was his opportunity to step up.

Hunter: If you're looking for a tough guy, he's your candidate. I swear I heard him growl at least twice.

Gilmore: Which one was he?

Thompson: Tommy is the wrong Thompson, of course. Everyone is waiting for Fred Thompson to get in the race. The word is sometime in July.

As a long time subscriber to the Post and a big Jim Spencer/Diane Carman fan, I've gained two new journalists I like to read in the Rocky, Littwin and Sprenglemeyer. Caught Littwin and Specer as fresh new voices on 760, and Sprenglemeyer, after giving him hard time about a "lengthy" story on Tancredo's farmer/ex-marine campaign manager. Sprenglemeyer's trying to get me hooked on these blog, and he doesn't realize what a monster he could create, but this is fun and edjookational.
So someone has to ask Tancredo, "what came first?, the chicken or the egg?"

Since Mr. Littwin issued a challenge, here's an answer.

Rep. Tancredo reportedly has amended his silent, hand-raising comment about evolution.

I was advised that if you Google "Tancredo" and "evolution," that you'll get this: http://tancredo.house.gov/Media/TancredoMiamiSpeech.pdf
