Roll the Credits
George Bush says the fight over Alberto Gonzales is so much "political theater." And then Marilyn Musgrave -- yes, Marilyn Musgrave!!! -- stunningly joins the troupe.
Political theater? How about theater of the absurd.
When Musgrave goes over to the other side, you can start picking out your headline. Here are a few theatrical samples:
Curtains for Gonzo. Last call for Gonzo. Light's out for Gonzo.
I know: Gonzo -- Exit stage right.
This is theater all right, and when Musgrave is saying she's not here to praise Gonzo, but to bury him, you know the show is about to close. Last week, it was Ken Salazar throwing his good friend Gonzales under the bus.
It was Salazar, you remember, who began his career in the Senate by introducing Gonzales when he was nominated to be attorney general. That was what we call in the biz an inauspicious start. Salazar praised Gonzales' life story, but left out the part about him being a pro-torture Bush crony. Of course, at the time, no one knew then about all the cronies to come in the Justice Department. Heckuva job, Albie.
I don't know what pushed Musgrave over the edge, but I recommend this story by Stuart Taylor in the National Journal, which summarizes the infamous Gonzales raid on former attorney general John Ashcroft's hospital room. This reads like the final act.
Here's a summary:
George Bush wanted to get his warrantless wiretap program going. Ashcroft, who had already turned it down, was in the George Washington University intensive care unit with pancreatis. He had given Deputy AG James Comey the power to act in his stead.
Comey recently told the Judiciary Committee about what we might call the 2004 hospital caper. Comey opposed the Bush request on wiretaps because it was, you know, illegal, and, as Deputy AG, it was his job not to approve illegal stuff. And so Gonzales, then Bush's White House counsel, rushed to the hospital where Ashcroft had just had his gallbladder removed -- to see if an attorney general who was under heavy sedation might reconsider the situation.
Comey found out about the visit and raced Gonzales to the hospital - there were sirens blaring, and the head of the FBI showed up. I can't wait for the movie. Comey warned Ashcroft, who would rise from his hospital bed to tell Gonzales basically to beat it.
And now we know Gonzales' greatest feat as attorney general: He made John Ashcroft into a hero.

This administration and quite a few others have alot to answer on where matters involving my own immigration nightmare fits in to the scheme amid all of the corruption involved and attempts on my life and my families lives and the people of Colorado's life? I don't much care to live practically behind a whole bunch of macaroni you all have played out in your own interest and own personal political agendas and gain. This is very shameful on the part of all of us. I myself included. Another thing to The WhiteHouse. I have chosen to opt for Mexico, Durango MX, to work directly with Democrats for All America and Latinos. I also would like to endorse This Day the only Candidate I feel is best qualified to lead the American People and He is none other than The Governor Of New Mexico Mr./Sr. BILL RICHARDSON.
Our Lord in Heaven must be shining down on Him because there is no other way We can reconcile ourselves on the many issues around foreign affairs like my own which directly involves Gomez Palacio, Durango, MEXICO, MX. (MEXICO-LATIN AMERICA)
Add 2/3 majority to his vote for President and you'll get the majority vote comes from the Latino vote. We The People have much work to do on our commitment to arrive at having global peace. Much in the way as Ghandi
and his peoples from India taught us. And The peoples of The legendary Martin Luther King Sr. Or the peoples of Jews. The Middle Eastern peoples and our love and hope for peace with Them.
