Bad joke bombs Rocky site
By Alan Gathright
If you had trouble reaching the Dome Blog or the Rocky's Web sight today, blame Americans' fascination with bad jokes -- or a Greeley businessman's public mortification.
The newspaper's Web site was crashed for several hours this morning by a stampede of 'Net surfers rushing to read the story about a bombed joke bid by Greeley businessman William R. Farr at the Citizen of the West banquet before a crowd of political power players Wednesday.
Crowd-driving sites like the DrudgeReport.com linked to the story and the Rocky Web site froze like streaker on Colfax Avenue this bone-chilling day.
Unlike the Colorado Rockies, we're not blaming a " Malicious Attack."
OK, if you must, here's the misguided joke:
Farr was pretending to read telegrams congratulating this year's award recipient, University of Colorado President Hank Brown, during the National Western Stock Show's annual at the Adam's Mark Hotel.
He pulled out a piece of paper and said, "I have a telegram from the White House."
Then he added, "They're going to have to change the name of that building if Obama's elected."
Like many people in the crowd, Gov. Bill Ritter said: "I gasped."
After he pulled his foot out of his mouth, Farr quickly apologized.
