Rally to derail eminent domain "abuse" on RTD light rail extension

By Alan Gathright

Foes of eminent domain "abuse" will rally on the Capitol steps at 11 a.m. in support of a bill to prohibit the Regional Transporation District from conducting a "land grab" from small property owners for a Denver-to-Golden light rail line.

Speakers will include home and business owners who accuse RTD of using condemnation to unfairly take their property -- and refusing to listen to little-guy landowners.

The bill, co-sponsored by Rep. Al White, R-Hayden, Rep. Ken Summers, R-Lakewood, and Sen. Lois Tochtrop, D-Thorton, would bar RTD from using eminent domain to force the sale of private property for commercial developments such as retail, office and higher-density housing projects along the rail line.

No word yet on why White, who represents rural Routt County, is battling urban light rail expansion that should reach Hayden by ...well...maybe 2085.
