Bill to spay or neuter pets makes the cut

A bill that would require that all cats and dogs be spayed or neutered before an animal shelter or pet animal rescue can turn it over to a prospective owner was adopted on a voice vote in the House of Representatives.
“It’s no secret that we a have a pet overpopulation problem in the state of Colorado,” said bill co-sponsor Rep. Cherylin Peniston, D-Westminster.
According to the Colorado Department of Agriculture, animal shelters and animal rescue organizations across Colorado took in more than 173,199 cats and dogs in 2006.
Of those, about 25 percent were euthanized, Peniston said.
Spaying and neutering dogs and cats is just “good policy,” she said.
