Just say 'no' to Gitmo detainees
Rep. Cory Gardner, R-Yuma, is circulating a petition opposing the proposed relocation of Guantanamo Bay detainees to the Supermax prison in Fremont County.
The Associated Press reported this morning that President Barack Obama is considering Colorado facilities for the detainees, which include 9/11 mastermind Khalid Shaikh Mohammed.
Gardner described this as "really dangerous" and said he hopes to hold hearings on the matter.
Rep. Buffie McFadyen, a Pueblo West Democrat whose district includes the Florence-area prison complexes, said she too is concerned because the Bureau of Prisons has been understaffed for years and would need to build a new facility for the terrorists. She supports relocating them to a military facitlity like Camp Pendleton in California or Fort Leavenworth in Kansas but said she wants to read the petition before she decides to sign it.
"Florence should be an option evaluated after we exhaust military options," McFadyen said.
