Nuggets get in holiday spirit

The highlight had to be George Karl wearing a Santa hat.

Then again, there was some nifty bowling by Kenyon Martin.

The Nuggets got the holiday season started in earnest Monday by having a party for 30 students from Gilpin Elementary School at Lucky Strike Lanes on the 16th Street Mall.

Nuggets players, coaches and front-office officials attended. The kids got to bowl with Denver players.

"It's good, man,'' said Nuggets guard Chauncey Billups. "Some of these kids might only see you on TV or in the newspaper. This gives them an opportunity to interact with some of their heroes in the Denver community. It's awesome.''

The same cannot be said for Billups' bowling. Asked his ability as a kegler, Billups said, "Terrible.''

That's not the case with Martin, a Nuggets forward. Left with single pin the right side, Martin threw what looked like a major-league curveball. It swerved into the pin, and Martin got his spare.

"Did you see that?'' said Martin, a fine bowler who couldn't provide his best-ever score but said it easily is over 200.

Meanwhile, Karl, the Nuggets coach, looked on with a smile as many of his top players bowled. If there was any concern over Carmelo Anthony bowling despite the right elbow contusion that has bothered him in recent weeks, nobody showed any.

"It wasn't a good day (bowling),'' Anthony said. "I couldn't get my swagger. But it was fun being here, and getting in the (holiday) spirit.''

The spirit will continue. On Dec. 18, Nuggets guard J.R. Smith will fill in for Marcus Camby for "Cambyland Christmas'' at Macy's at Cherry Creek Mall.

That's right. Camby isn't even with the Nuggets any more, but he's still having his annual occasion when he will treat members of his Marcus' Mentors and 15 youngsters from Denver's Cope Boys & Girls Club to a shopping spree.

Camby selected Smith to pinch-hit for him since next week Camby will be in the midst of a four-game Los Angeles Clippers trip to the Midwest.

"It's something I want to get involved in,'' Smith said of Camby's charity endeavors.

Everybody on the Nuggets got involved Monday. And Karl even donned a Santa hat.
