Expect a Nuggets deal by trade deadline
By Chris Tomasson
Rocky Mountain News
Expect a Nuggets deal by the Feb. 19 trade deadline.
But don't expect one any time soon in the wake of the broken hand that will sideline forward Carmelo Anthony three to four weeks. At least that's the word from coach George Karl.
"My gut feeling is probably not,'' Karl said.
It looks now as if the Nuggets are in a wait-and-see mode with their team. Karl said the plan for the near future is to "evaluate Sonny Weems'' and then go from there. The Nuggets called up Weems after he averaged 18 points for the NBADL's Colorado 14ers.
While the Nuggets are in no rush, expect them to make a deal by the trade deadline. They dealt Cheikh Samb on Monday to get just under the luxury-tax threshold of $71.15 million, but they likely need to make another trade to assure that some player bonuses don't put them back over the tax line.
The Nuggets also want to beef up the roster for the playoff run. A big man is a likely target, with the Nuggets keeping a close eye on Oklahoma City, where big men Chris Wilcox, Joe Smith and Nick Collison are available.
The players wanted to be traded by Denver are guard Chucky Atkins and center Steven Hunter, who each have contracts that expire after next season. Atkins is by far the easier one to move since he's healthy and playing (Hunter is out following knee surgery) and just $760,000 of his $3.48 million contract for next season is guaranteed. But, in order to move either, the Nuggets might need to dangle a first-round draft pick and/or send cash to a team.
Another player who could be dealt is forward Linas Kleiza. There's a lot of uncertainty surrounding Kleiza, who becomes a restricted free agent next summer and could bolt to Europe and leave the Nuggets with nothing.
With Anthony out, the Nuggets might not want to deal Kleiza now. While Karl wouldn't say who will start Wednesday against Miami in place of Anthony, it could be Kleiza. Karl said matchups are a consideration, and he seems to match up better against Miami small forward Shawn Marion than either of Karl's other candidates.
Karl said he also is considering starting J.R. Smith or Atkins in place of Anthony. That's right, Atkins, whom Karl said is doing well in practice, actually is a candidate.
If Atkins gets a start, then he would be at shooting guard with Dahntay Jones sliding to small forward. Of course, Atkins starting in the near future seems like a long shot.
Then again, maybe there's a plan to audition Atkins for a possible trade down the road.

What about a trade for Brad Miller? It doesn't sound like he's getting too much attention on the trade markert. Hunter and Atkins would let Sacramento cut salary for next year. Denver would be picking up an 11 million salary for next year.

Kings GM Geoff Petrie tried to trade for two players last year, the Knicks David Lee and Linas Keiza. Brad Miller would be a good fit in Denver. He came into camp last year in great shape and looks just as good this year, but the loses and the trade dead line is hangin over him and he wants to get past it. If any trade goes through with Denver it would have to include Linas Keiza, a first round draft pick, probably cash and players with expiring contracts (which would also be Linas case). Brad is a good center that can pass and hit his outside shot and make players around him better. The question is will Denver be willing to pull the trigger as Karl could have had Ron Artest this time last year for Linas.

Holy crap, if George starts Billups and Atkins this whole time, I'm gonna kill myself. Especially against DWYANE WADE -- which one of those guys is checking him? Incredible.
Start Kleiza, you idiot. Ever heard of a positionally-sound lineup? We DO have backup small forwards, you know. Unbelievable.
A 3 guard lineup with Jones and Smith is bad enough (JR is not a SF), but at least he replaces Melo's lost firepower with JR's. Kleiza is the obvious solution there though, it's beyond me that he would consider starting Atkins with Billups against one of the top 5 players in the entire league and probably the toughest guy to defend on the perimeter.

Nuggets have the worst front office in the NBA, they were screwed once Camby left, im glad AI is out of there
imagine this time last year they could have got Artest, which would make a GREAT team imagine
Iverson,Camby,Melo,K-Mart,Artest in the same team? that would be a Ring right there
